Wazewski Tadeusz Wazewski. Born 24 Sept 1896 in Galicia, Poland Died 5 Sept 1972. TadeuszWazewski was born at a difficult time in Polish history. http://www-gap.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Mathematicians/Wazewski.html
Extractions: Tadeusz Wazewski was born at a difficult time in Polish history. Poland had been partitioned in 1772 and the south, called Galicia, was under Austrian control. Russia controlled much of the country and in the years prior to Wazewski's birth there had been strong moves by Russia to make "Vistula Land", as it was called, be dominated by Russian culture. In a policy implemented between 1869 and 1874, all secondary schooling was in Russian. Warsaw only had a Russian language university after the University of Warsaw became a Russian university in 1869. Galicia, although under Austrian control, retained Polish culture and only there could Poles receive a Polish education. Zaremba and changed his course from physics to mathematics. Under Zaremba , Wazewski became interested in set theory and topology and decided to study in Paris for his doctorate. This was a typical route for Polish mathematicians of this period, forced to study abroad (as Poland was partitioned) many chose the same route as Wazewski studying in Polish universities in Austrian controlled Galicia and completing their education in France. Zaremba . His doctoral dissertation, on topological results relating to dendrites, was examined in 1923 by the powerful examining committee consisting of

Equadiff 99 - Social Program In 1939 many Polish citizens were deported to Sachsenhausen, including a groupof professors of the University of Cracow, among them tadeusz wazewski. http://www.math.fu-berlin.de/~equadiff/socialprogram.html
Extractions: Our Welcome reception on Sunday, August 01, 18:00 at the conference location will provide an opportunity for first leisurely contact and for registration. Nonalcoholic beverages and a small snack are provided free of charge. Scheduled return time to the dome is 6:00 PM. All excursions are free of charge for registered accompanying persons. Advance registration is required by Monday, August 02, 02:00 PM. Departure for all tours is from the entrance hall of the hotel ``Steglitz International'', Albrechtstr. 2, at U/S-Bahn ``Rathaus Steglitz''. On Thursday, August 5, a guided tour to the former concentration camp in Sachsenhausen is offered. The number of participants is limited to 50. The concentration camp Oranienburg was the first of its kind in Germany. It existed until 1934. Two years later, a new concentration camp was built in the neighboring village of Sachsenhausen. In the first period the prisoners were mostly members of the social-democratic and communist party. In 1939 many Polish citizens were deported to Sachsenhausen, including a group of professors of the University of Cracow, among them Tadeusz Wazewski.
Satellite Conferences Of ECM'96 Title Topological Methods in Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems (Onthe 100th anniversary of Professor tadeusz wazewski's birthday) Topics http://www.emis.de/ECM2/satellites.html
Extractions: Topic: Much of the liveliest work in group theory today involves, in some way, the interplay of finite and infinite aspects. Two particular themes are finiteness conditions and growth rates. Techniques from many parts of mathematics are used, and group theory repays its debt with a number of applications. The main topic areas will be: locally finite groups; profinite and residually finite groups; asymptotic group theory; combinatorial and geometric group theory; groups and model theory.
