Extractions: The Life of William Tyndale William Tyndale was born about 1494 in Gloucestershire. He took his B.A. at Oxford in 1512 and his M.A. in 1515. He also apparently spent time in Cambridge. He was for some time tutor to a Gloucestershire family. He disturbed the local divines by routing them at the dinner table with chapter and verse of scripture, and by translating Erasmus' Enchiridion militis christiani (Handbook of the Christian Soldier, 1503). He was accused of heresy, but nothing was ever proved. John Foxe reports in his Acts and Monuments (1563) that one day at dinner, Tyndale announced to a visiting clergyman that he meant to translate the Bible so that ploughboys should be more educated than the clergyman himself. He travelled to London to ask the Bishop, Cuthbert Tunstall, for support in his work. Tunstall rebuffed him. At this time, king Henry VIII was still the defender of the Catholic faith. Realising he could not translate the Bible in England, Tyndale accepted the help of a London merchant and went to Germany in 1524. He never returned to England, but lived a hand-to-mouth existence, dodging the Roman Catholic authorities. In 1525, he and his secretary moved to Cologne, Germany and began printing the New Testament. Tyndale's writings were popular in England. Henry VIII, fearing Tyndale's influence, sent an ambassador to persuade him to return to England. In a secret, nighttime meeting outside Antwerp city walls, Tyndale agreed that he would return to England, if the king would print an English Bible. By the time Henry published his Great Bible, Tyndale was already dead.

J.C.Nagle This was Joseph Chichester Nagle, or rather Joseph Chichester, 1792-1880. He had taken his grandmother's name of Nagle on inheriting her estates in Ireland, but unlike the Constable family (below) the name was not passed on to his descendants who remained as Chichester. Joseph was the eldest son of Charles Chichester who was himself second son of John Chichester of Arlington by his second wife, Mary MacDonald. Charles (1770-1837) married Honoria ffrench of Rahasane in Ireland. He was the only remaining member of the Chichester family who remained a Catholic, the rest of them having conformed to the Established Church. Honoria's aunt (or great-aunt?) also called Honoria, and known as 'Nano Nagle', founded the order of Presentation nuns and a group of them are known to have visited Calverleigh. Honoria Nagle's uncles or great-uncles, Joseph Nagle (c1724-1813) and David Nagle (c1719-1800) lived at Calverleigh, though, like the rest of the family this did not mean they remained there all the time as they had other estates especially in Ireland and many of both families had a house in London. David Nagle is commemorated by a large plaque in Calverleigh church. (The exact genealogy of the Nagle family remains to be clarified)

The Boston system of electrically operated subways and tunnels is ventilated by electric fans capable of completely changing the air in each section about every fifteen minutes. Air admitted at portals and stations is withdrawn midway between stations. In the case of the East Boston tunnel, the air leaving the tunnel under the middle of the harbour is carried to the shore through longitudinal ducts (fig. 3) and is there expelled through fan-chambers. Volume of Air Required for Ventilation. The consumption of coal by a locomotive during the passage through a tunnel having been ascertained, and 29 cub. ft. of poisonous gas being allowed for each pound of coal consumed, the volume of fresh air required to maintain the atmosphere of the tunnel at a standard of purity of 20 parts of carbon dioxide in 10,000 parts of air is ascertained as follows: The number of pounds of fuel consumed per mile, multiplied by 29, multiplied by 500, and divided by the interval in minutes between the trains, will give the volume of air in cubic feet which must be introduced into the tunnel per minute. As an illustration, assume that the tunnel is a mile in length, that the consumption of fuel is 32 ft per mile, and that one train passes through the tunnel every five minutes in each direction; then the volume of air required per minute will be

Extractions: Two chests. The one closer to the door is older c.700 years; the other c.400 years. Both were originally money chests, but were reused later for storing documents (especially since the older chest was severely damaged by fire). The padlock on the elder is only about three hundred years old. There is a legend that the older chest was used as a temporary coffin for St. Cuthbert's body at the time of the Reformation; but this is apocryphal, and probably due to its similarity to a coffin.

The organ was once the chair organ in the Cathedral, and its case dates back to the c17 as do the central carvings of reredos behind the altar. The screen at the west end also came from the Cathedral, where it used to enclose St Cuthbert's shrine. The stalls are a mixture of Victorian work and that of Bishop Ruthall around 1510.
