   Extractions: John Tukey 's parents recognised that he had great potential while he was still only a child so the arranged for him to be educated at home rather than in school. This was possible since his parents were themselves teachers. His formal education began only when he entered Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island to study mathematics and chemistry. After being awarded his Master's Degree in chemistry from Brown University, Tukey went to Princeton University in 1937 to study for his doctorate in mathematics. He received his doctorate in 1939 for a dissertation Denumerability in topology which was published in 1940 as Convergence and uniformity in topology . He had already had three papers published before his doctorate was awarded and, in after graduating he was appointed as an instructor at Princeton. External events were to play a major role in the direction of Tukey's career since he joined the Fire Control Research office to contribute towards the war effort.    Extractions: As a chemist-turned-topologist-turned statistician, John Wilder Tukey played a key role in the development and study of statistics in the mid 1900's. The field of statistics has benefited tremendously from his contributions. J. W. Tukey was born on July 16, 1915, in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was the only child of Ralph H. and Adah M. (Tasker) Tukey. His parents recognized the great potential in their son at a very early age and decided to school him at home. Home schooling was convenient for Tukey since both of his parents were teachers. Tukey's formal education did not begin until he entered Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, to study mathematics and chemistry. Tukey complete his studies at Brown University when he graduated with a Master's degree in chemistry. He then went on to study for a doctorate in mathematics at Princeton University in 1937. Tukey received his doctorate in 1939 for the dissertation Denumerability in topology . This impressive thesis was then published in 1940 as Convergence and Uniformity in topology . It was the second book in the Annals of Mathematics Studies of the Princeton University Press. However, this was not Tukey's first publication. Even prior to obtaining his doctorate, he wrote three papers that had been published.

    Extractions: John W. Tukey John Tukey is a pioneer in exploratory data analysis. Whenever we take samples of a product or of public opinion, we amass a collection of data points. If there are only two numbers that describe each observation, like the height and weight of students in a class, then that information can be plotted on a graph and we can see if the points "cluster" to reveal some relationship between the two quantities. But in the census data for a large city there may be many different numbers that describe each observation, three or four or more. John Tukey and his colleagues studied the "point clouds" that arise in such situations and manipulated them on a computer screen until patterns emerged that indicated relationships among different variables. To this day, one of the most significant uses of scientific visualization is in the analysis of such patterns in statistical data. Software for rotating point clouds has been developed by Data Description Inc. John Wilder Tukey, an emeritus Princeton professor considered to be one of the most important contributors to modern statistics, died Wednesday. He was 85. Tukey developed many important tools of modern statistics and introduced concepts that were central to the creation of today's telecommunications technologies. In addition to his formidable research achievements, Tukey was known for his penchant for coining terms that reflected new ideas and techniques in the sciences and is credited with introducing the computer science terms "bit" (short for binary digit) and "software." "He probably made more original contributions to statistics than anyone else since World War II," said Frederick Mosteller, retired professor of mathematical statistics at Harvard University. "I believe that the whole country scientifically, industrially, financially is better off because of him and bears evidence of his influence," said retired Princeton Professor John A. Wheeler, who is a major figure in the history of physics and the development of the atomic bomb.
