Extractions: Some of you may recall that when last we left our heroic case officer, he had endured an Internet-based "date" with Suspect (we called her "G") during which G spent the entire evening discussing the intimate and unrequested details of her recently-blossomed 'love'/sex affair with Accomplice, whom we referred to as "X". So in what was deemed as a small step towards sociological progress, said heroic case officer (HCO) accepted the aid of a "friend" and former co-worker. We'll call her "BT". BT offered to "fix up" HCO with a woman whom BT knew, whom BT felt would be "perfect" for HCO. After two months, last week BT followed through with her promise/threat and provided phone number of Suspect #2 (we'll call her "H") to HCO, who immediately, lacking any reason not to, called H and arranged for the inevitable first encounter last night, 15 August 1998. Behold, the Ides of August. Payday. Or..... payback?

Grape Newsletter - South Africa's Independent Wine Newsletter Reminiscent of the great Cape wines of the 1940s, with an almost tarry richness and bottleof the year Vouvray 'Le Haut Lieu' 1992 DemiSec from gaston Huet. http://www.grape.org.za/is13i.html
Extractions: A review of the year's drinking reflects both effort and good fortune. I am the lucky recipient of the generosity of many friends and colleagues. Perhaps the highlight of the year was 1727 Rudesheimer Apostolenwein from a famous and ancient collection; remarkably, still very much alive, though it faded in the glass. I have to say that I doubt the absolute authenticity of the vintage. Such wines are not like the 1791 Constantia from the Duke of Northumberland's cellars, where we were certain of indulging in an 'unrefreshed' 200+ year old. The sheer length, persistence and complexity of whatever was in the bottle made it a highpoint. For those who still have 1994 Stellenzicht Syrah and fear it is not living up to its initial promise, recent bottles have offered reassurance. Now, as the initial oak fades and the fruit enters a secondary phase, the density, intensity, and length of this wine make it my best Cape wine of the 1990s.
