Extractions: HUNGARIANS In my search for clues to the mystery of Hungarian talent I talked to so many Hungarians and heard mention of so many more that I gained the impression of a large representation in the cultural wave. But I must have confused quality with quantity. Though they constitute the fourth largest national group the Hungarians in my file are fewer than a hundred, about 5 per cent of the total wave. They themselves explain that they seem more numerous because they have the gift of ubiquity - and some do seem to be in more than one place at the same time - which multiplies the effect of their presence. Indeed, they travel so frequently, so fast, and so unexpectedly that there is certain ground for this belief. But there may be a better explanation. Hungarian intellectuals began to emigrate earlier than those from Not all the early Hungarian emigrants came directly to this country. Among those who did not, there were many students who sought to finish their education outside Hungary: while the Hungarian gymnasiums were excellent the universities were poor and the numerus clausus excluded from them all but 5 per cent of the Jewish students. German universities were the most favored by Hungarians, though some students went to Austria, Czechoslovakia, and elsewhere. The fact that many went to Germany was ground for a casual remark made recently by one of my Hungarian friends: "Why make so much fuss about the Hungarians? They were all educated in Germany anyhow." But this is too broad a generalization.

Extractions: Toward Professional Definition The Cartesian approach to knowledge has greatly enhanced biomedical technology by liberating the study of man from medieval theology. Legitimiz ing the study of the human body as a thing, that is, as a physical entity (res extensa), has made possible great technical advances that could not have occurred if anatomical dissections and other experiments that might have challenged the authority of the church were prohibited. However, when we refer to the study of man in the traditions of philosophical anthropology, we understand that to mean much more than the study of human physiology. The "soul" (res cogitans), which Descartes split off from the body, has all but lost any compelling significance in modern culture; even the word "spirit" barely conveys the more-than-physical concerns that are inevitably a part of the physician's concern for the patient. Thus we see two basic ways in which Cartesian dualism can deter modern medicine: (1) through treating the body as a machine (res extensa) and (2) through the concept of discarnate mentality (res cogitans). The former is overly materialistic; the latter is overly rationalistic.3 In all these chapters I have been discussing the limitations of an approach to ethics that attempts complete specifiability. In this chapter I attempt to demonstrate that this approach to ethics, depending as it does on an impersonal view of man (the person) and relying on the Cartesian mind-body dichotomy, contributes to the dehumanization experienced in modern medical practice.

Extractions: September 1996 (Updated March 2002) ERIC Clearinghouse for Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Education DIGEST Many teachers accept science literacy as an important goal for K-12 education. Those without a strong background in science, mathematics, and technology, however, may be unsure of how to teach important ideas from these fields to their students. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) provided some direction with its report, Science for All Americans (1989), that includes a set of recommendations about what scientifically literate citizens should know and be able to do. A companion report, Benchmarks for Science Literacy (1993), elaborates the expected progress that students should make toward science literacy by recommending what students should know and be able to do at certain grade levels. Many of the ideas and recommendations found in these two reports have subsequently influenced formulation of National Science Education Standards (National Resarch Council, 1996) as well as numerous state and local curriculum frameworks. But where can teachers turn to strengthen their own understanding of science ideas and bring substance to local, state, and national standards? As part of its comprehensive effort to reform K-12 education, Project 2061 of the AAAS has begun to address this problem, recently developing a database of trade books on topics central to science literacy. The database is designed to help teachers better understand a specific set of learning goals for their students by linking directly to recommendations in Science for All Americans. Though broad in scope, Science for All Americans focuses on ideas central to science literacy, deliberately omitting less crucial topics, however popular in today's curriculum materials and classrooms.
