For more general information on submitting manuscripts to Historia Mathematica see the information for authors Papers to appear in Historia Mathematica go through a three-step evaluation and preparation process: Papers submitted to Historia Mathematica are sent to two anonymous referees, who submit referees' reports. On the basis of these reports, the editor and managing editor decide whether the paper can be published in principle. The editorial office communicates this decision to the author, with extracts from the referees' reports if relevant. On the basis of the suggestions, recommendations, etc. in the referees' reports, the author prepares a semi-final version of his paper and sends it to the editor or managing editor. The editor or managing editor now edits the semi-final version for clarity and in accordance with the instructions for authors below. If substantial changes are necessary, the author is contacted for approval. The result is the final version.

Extractions: UNESP - São Paulo - Brazil It's quite an old idea that nature's book is written with numbers. As Plato: "The world is a God's missive to mankind and it's written in mathematical letters." As Centuries go by, mainly from the 17th Century the use of mathematics (the study of numbers!) is bigger and bigger in the formulation of the physical laws. So the differential calculus is important after Isaac Newton ( ) and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz ( ) to the treatment of Mechanics. Symmetry is one of the mathematical aspects of great utility in the modern Physics (mainly from this Century). The word "symmetry" originates from Greek and means "with measure" or "just proportion " ( sun : with; metron : measure). On the whole, it implies an idea of harmony, proportion and balance among the parts. Symmetries are present in art and architecture from time immemorial. We too observe symmetries in the macroscopic nature. Maybe the symmetry we recognize from a child is the Bilateral Symmetry , i.e., the idea of left-right in relation to an axis or a plane. For instance, it's this symmetry that's present when we look ourselves at a mirror. There's something very aesthetic in symmetry, regularity, agreeable proportions, periodicity. In a sense a symmetrical object is beautiful. The non-symmetricalobject isn't. What's the rhythmic sequence of a poem but periodicity? Repetition of a phoneme in time. Yet most accomplishments of symmetries found in nature are approximate. In fact, most of the times in order that a phenomenon is produced it's necessary that certain elements of symmetry don't exist. Pierre Curie said that: "It's asymmetry that creates the phenomenon." Or as Francis Bacon remarked: "There's no perfect beauty that doesn't have anything strange in its proportion." The fundamental problem is lack of symmetry, i.e.

Extractions: Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
