Het betreft een wijziging naar aanleiding van het overlijden van Dirk Struik, op het in een eerder bericht reeds aangekondigde wijziging op het programma van het historisch colloquium dat gepland stond voor 27 oktober 2000. Het programma is inmiddels verwijderd maar is wel opgenomen in een verslag van de bijeenkomst. Op zaterdag 21 oktober is Dirk Struik overleden op de leeftijd van 106 jaar. In verband hiermee gooit GMFW haar programma van het historisch colloquium vrijdag aanstaande om. In plaats van de lezing van Gerard Alberts over Van Wijngaarden herdenken wij om 16:00 uur Dirk Struik met een persoonlijke herinnering van Marjolein Kool, en een voordracht van Gerard Alberts over Struik als historicus van de wiskunde.     Extractions: Wie de Nederlandstalige rekenboeken uit de vijftiende en zestiende eeuw leest, ontmoet geen grootse en originele wiskundige gedachten, maar raakt na verloop van tijd onder de indruk van de inzet en toewijding waarmee de rekenmeesters de `nieuwe' rekenmethode met de pen, dat wil zeggen het schriftelijk rekenen met Hindoe-Arabische getallen, aan hun doelgroep onderrichten. Deze doelgroep, bestaande uit toekomstige koop- en ambachtslieden en beoefenaars van allerlei administratieve en financiële beroepen, krijgt honderden vraagstukken voorgeschoteld en uitgelegd, over het kopen en verkopen van allerlei goederen, het wisselen van geld, het berekenen van rente, de samenstelling van metaallegeringen, salarissen, enz. De `nieuwe' rekenkunde bleek zeer geschikt om dergelijke rekenkundige praktijkproblemen op te lossen en kon zich in een groeiende belangstelling verheugen. Op deze wijze zorgden de rekenmeesters voor een enorme verbreding van het Nederlandse rekenpotentieel.
