Depois dos vinte anos de idade viajou pela Noruega, Polônia e Prússia e, na volta, estabeleceu-se na atual Holanda. Em 1581 passou a estudar em Leiden e dois anos depois entrou para a universidade local na qual, após formar-se, passou a ensinar matemática. Em 1585 publicou De thiende , de grande influência na engenharia, na prática comercial e na notação matemática e de grande popularidade na época. Em 1593 foi nomeado para um importante posto no exército holandês, por ordem do príncipe De Nassau, o que contribuiu para se tornar um grande engenheiro militar e assumir outros postos importantes no governo até sua morte, em Haia. Sua contribuição científica ao desenvolvimento da mecânica também foi notável. Na sua obra destacam-se três importantes publicações, todas editadas em Leiden e em holandês, em 1586: Princípios de estática , uma espécie de continuação dos trabalhos de Arquimedes (teoria da alavanca, centro de gravidade dos corpos, etc., e o teorema dos planos inclinados)

In onze studie van zijn wetenschappelijk werk hebben we in de literatuur, her en der verspreid, historische gegevens over Simon Stevin, zijn afstammelingen en andere figuren uit het Brugge van de 16 de Afkomst Simon Stevin is naar alle waarschijnlijkheid in Brugge geboren in 1548; men kent zijn exacte geboortedatum niet. In ieder geval vermeldde Stevin op praktisch elk gepubliceerd werk zij afkomst. Het jaartal 1548 vinden we terug op een schilderij van Stevin dat het eigendom is van de bibliotheek van de Universiteit van Leiden. Nochtans kennen we dank zij het werk van Schouteet (1937) enkele documenten die aanwezig zijn in het stadsarchief te Brugge. Hij is geboren als onwettig kind van een burgerdochter Cathelijne van der Poort, dochter van Hubrecht. Deze Hubrecht werd poorter van Brugge in 1512 of 1513. In de stadsrekeningen van Brugge lopende van 2 september 1512 tot 2 september 1513 kan men op pag.13 lezen "ontfanc denghuenen die huerlieder poorterscip ghecocht hebben binnen dese jare ...Van Hubrechte vander Poort". Zijn moeder moet tamelijk welstellend geweest zijn, gezien verschillende documenten bestaan waarin ze wordt aangeduid als erfgenaam van goederen te Ieper gelegen. De vader van Simon was Anthuenis (Anton) Stevin; over die figuur is weinig geweten. Volgens een mededeling van Schouteet werd in 1548 een "Anthuenis Stevin, gheboren te Vuerne", ingeschreven als lid van de kloveniersgilde van Sint-Barbara te Brugge

Pode-se dizer que o estudo da hidrostática teve início com Stevin. Foi ele quem demonstrou que a pressão que um líquido exerce sobre uma superfície depende apenas da altura da coluna do líquido e da área da superfície, não importando o tamanho ou a forma do recipiente. Ele foi também o primeiro a constatar que dois corpos de pesos diterentes, ao serem soltos ao mesmo tempo, chegam ao solo simultaneamente. (Essa experiência costuma ser atribuída a Galileu que, no entanto, apenas a analisou melhor.) Stevin dedicou-se ainda a diversas outras áreas do conhecimento: calculou a declinação magnética (diferença angular entre o pólo norte magnético e o pólo norte geográfico) em diversos locais; demonstrou geometricamente a impossibilidade de funcionamento de um moto-perpétuo (dispositivo mecânico que se acreditava poder trabalhar infinitamente sem requerer energia); traduziu obras gregas; além disso, projetou o primeiro veículo com tração dianteira: uma carroça movida a vela. Como matemático, Stevin criou uma notação para a escrita dos números decimais fracionários, que posteriormente resultou no uso da vírgula.
