The Sierpinski triangle , also called the Sierpinski gasket , is a fractal , named after Waclaw Sierpinski An algorithm for obtaining arbitarily close approximations to the Sierpinski triangle is as follows: Start with any triangle in a plane. The canonical Sierpinski triangle uses an equilateral triangle with a base parallel to the horizontal axis. Shrink the triangle by 1/2, make three copies, and translate them so that each triangle touches the two other triangles at a corner. Repeat step 2 with each of the smaller triangles. The actual fractal is what would be obtained after an infinite number of iterations. More formally, one describes it in terms of functions on closed sets of points. If we let d_a note the dilation by a factor of 1/2 about a point a, then the Sierpinski triangle with corners a, b, and c is the fixed set of the transformation d_a U d_b U d_c.

He found it while reasearching on topology. The Sierpinski Triangle has all the properties of a fractal: Please enable java script and get flash to view this animation A fractal is a geometric shape which is selfsimilar and which has a fractal dimension. Selfsimilar means that when you look at a smaller part of the fractal, it still looks about the same. For example, you can magnify the Sierpinski Triangle as much as you like and it will still look about the same. A fractal dimension means that it is not just one, two, or more dimensional, but something in between. A perfect example of this is the border of the Sierpinski triangle. Take a look at the animation which shows how it is created. To draw a Sierpinski triangle, start out with an equilateral triangle. Then, a triangle is cut out which has it's corners at the midpoint of the original triangle's edges. What you have left are three smaller triangles. Now do the same again with the smaller triangles. The cutting out is called an iteration. An iteration is a step which does a small part of the work and is done again and again to get the final outcome. The shape you end up with, the Sierpinski triangle, has a border which has a length of infinity: every time you repeat the above process you increase the length of the border by one half more than it just did on the last iteration (try it out on paper).

Waclaw SIERPINSKI C'est une figure fractale comme il en existe beaucoup d'autres. Rappelons qu'une image fractale est obtenue en partant d'un dessin plus ou moins compliqué et en lui appliquant une certaine transformation géométrique qui lui ajoute une complexité. On recommence alors à appliquer la même tranformation au nouveau dessin obtenu et ainsi de suite une infinité de fois. Le terme de 'fractale' a été donné par le mathématicien français Benoît Mandelbrot en 1975. De nos jours, l'étude (qui n'est pas chose facile) et la représentation d'une fractale sont simplifiées grâce aux ordinateurs. On peut ainsi dessiner une nouvelle fractale rapidement en ne modifiant que quelques paramètres. Cela n'a cependant pas été le cas de quelques fractales du début du siècle comme le flocon de neige de Von Koch, les ensembles de Julia, le triangle de Sierpinski (en 1915) ...
