The name means "Eight Diagrams (or Trigrams) Palm." It is sometimes written instead as Pa Kua Chang - Pa Kua Chuan -Baguaquan, or simply abbreviated to Bagua. Baguazhang is soundly linked to Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan), and Xingyiquan (Hsing I) which are sometimes referred to as the "Three Sister Arts". These internal martial arts rely heavily on the classical and cosmological views developed in Taoist alchemy and medicine for their foundations. To understand the complexity of internal Chinese martial arts a brief excursion into Taoist thinking is worthwhile for any serious enquiry. Baguazhang (Pa Kua Chang - Pa-kua ch'uan) is purportedly derived from the metaphysical diagrams generated from the I-Ching -The Book of Changes. Oldest parts date from 800BC more recent 200AD.The I-Ching was originally a collection of linear signs, perhaps best seen as code. (not unlike binary code) Below are typical examples arranged in hexa-gram sets.

Extractions: Pa Kua Overview www.Chiflow.com Pa-Kua, or Eight Diagrams, has basically two symbols referred to as Pre-Heaven and Post-Heaven. A philosophical understanding of these two symbols, their aspects and their properties, can lead one to discover the multiple aspects that lay beyond the even basic 64 hexagrams. The purpose of Pa-Kua Chang (Eight Diagrams Palm) practice is to harmonize the aspects of these two symbols within ourselves to advance ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually. When the student is able to harmonize the polar aspects of the Pre-Heaven symbol with the cyclic aspects of the Post-Heaven symbol, the student really can grasp not only the free style application of the art, but the curved line of the Tai Chi symbol. For it is the curved line, or S Curve, which is the combination of the polar and cyclic aspects. The Pre-Heaven Eight Trigrams were supposedly developed by the Emperor Fu Hsi around the year of 2900 B.C. Legend has it that Fu Hsi received his inspiration as a gift from a flying dragon that came out of the Yellow River. Fu Hsi, may or may not have been the original developer of the Pre-Heaven Pa-Kua. Legend further has it that he taught the people of the early Yellow river civilization how to cook and live in harmony with nature. However, around 2200 B.C. legend has it that the climate began to change and flooding was more prevalent along the banks of the Yellow River. Also around this time a new symbol, that was supposedly developed by the Emperor Yu, appeared to offer answers and explanations for the changes that were happening in Fu Hsi's harmonious world.

With the incredible popularity of Chinese herbs and traditional Chinese medicine formulae over the last few years in North America, Australia and Europe, it behooves practitioners to become familiar, or at least aware, of the individual herbs and substances which comprise the majority of formulas, along with their indications. Ninety-nine percent of all contemporary practitioners will undoubtedly opt to use in their practice ancient formulae which have been tableted and created for today's practitioner instead of spending thousands of hours learning how to formulate these ancient remedies themselves. In our busy practices and lives, we cannot expect to practice the same way it was done during the Ming dynasty and before. Utilizing Chinese herbology today has never been easier. Even with this in mind, knowledge of each individual substance, along with the English translation and indications, could prove to be a very valuable reference tool. The following list should be saved for future reference. Notice the list is in alphabetical order by Chinese name, followed by the English common name and indications. Should the need for a specific formula arise in which you are stymied not knowing where to look, fax the details to me at 602-488-5008; we will do the best we can to advise you and assist you in locating a patent formula or to create one specifically for your needs.

Extractions: Somewhere in the midst of unrecorded history, Pa Kua Chuen evolved. How or when it happened, no one really knows. There are many legends attributing to its evolution. Still, they are little better than hypothesis. Pa Kua is one of the three branches of 'Nei-chia' or internal family of Chinese pugilism. The other two are Tai Chi Chuen and Hsing-I Chuen. The name Pa Kua was derived from the philosophy of the various doctrine of the Book of Changes. This script, purported to be written 3,000 years ago, was originally intended to be a source of oracles. As time went by, the profoundness of the text was found to be so enhancing that it came to be regarded as one of the Five Classics of Confucianism, it served both Confucians and Taoists. The central theme of the text propounded continuous change and transformations of all existence. Many prominent monks and intellectuals utilized this principle and evolve a system of pugilism. Pak Kua Chuen concerns change. It is all flux. Nothing stands still. Other than that of I-Ching or Book of Changes, little is heard of Pak Kua in the early days. The earliest mention of it concerned the exploits of a certain Tung Hai Chuan during the Ching dynasty. Tung was born in Wenan Hsien, in the province of Hobei.

Extractions: Ba Gua Zhang AN INTRODUCTION TO BA GUA ZHANG B a Gua Zhang is recognized as one of the three orthodox "internal" styles of Chinese martial art (the other two being Xing Yi Quan and Tai Ji Quan). Ba Gua literally translates to Eight trigrams. These trigrams are symbols which are used to represent all natural phenomena as described in the ancient Chinese text of divination, the Book of Changes (Yi Jing). Zhang means palm and designates Ba Gua Zhang as a style of martial art, which emphasizes the use of the open hand in preference to the closed fist. Ba Gua Zhang, as a martial art, is based on the theory of continuously changing in response to the situation at hand in order to overcome an opponent with skill rather than brute force. A lthough there are several theories as to the Origins of Ba Gua Zhang, recent and exhaustive research by martial scholars in Mainland China conclude without reasonable doubt that the Art is the creation of a single individual, Dong Hai Chuan. Dong was born in Wen An County, Hebei Province about 1813. Dong practiced local martial arts (which reportedly relied heavily upon the use of open hand palm techniques) from his youth and gained some notoriety as a skilled fighter. At about 40 years of age, Dong left home and traveled southward.
