   Extractions: Samuel Roberts was educated at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School in the town of his birth. In 1844 he entered Manchester New College and, the following year, he began his studies at the University of London. He graduated in mathematics with a BA in 1847, then two years later he was placed first in the examinations for his MA in mathematics and physics. After this he studied law, becoming a solicitor in 1853 in Lincoln. However his love of mathematics made him give up law after a few years, and he returned to London to take up his mathematical studies for a second time. In fact he had published mathematical papers from 1848 but, after the London Mathematical Society was founded in early 1865, Roberts could join in discussions with other mathematicians for he had no mathematical post. As Glaisher write in [1]:- He was simply a private gentleman who pursued researches from pure love of investigation and desire to extend the boundaries of subjects that were attractive to him. And he never sought any recognition of his work; for him it was entirely its own reward.

This Oliver Hazard Perry Class frigate began construction on May 21, 1984 and was commissioned on April 12, 1986. "Sammy B.'s" first deployment in the Persian Gulf immediately challenged the crew's survivability skills as the ship struck a mine. Because of her crew's quick thinking, the ship survived the blast. All experts agreed that the ship should've sunk that day, but she defied all odds.

Today, the Lab occupies 15 rooms for instruments, photography and instruction in the Noble Microscopy Laboratory building and six research rooms in the adjacent George Lynn Cross Hall, which is occupied by the Department of Botany and Microbiology at 770 Van Vleet Oval. The facility occupies a total of nearly 4,500 square feet for research and instruction. The SRNML is available for use by researchers at all levels (undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral and faculty) with cooperative research opportunities with clients both on- and off-campus. The Laboratory also offers open houses and tours for elementary and high school groups and other groups, including explanations of how the instruments work, operational displays and examples of how they are used in industry. Currently, the SRNML houses the most sophisticated collection of electron microscopes in the State, with a current capital value of nearly $1.4 million. University researchers requiring the instruments may use the equipment for a nominal charge, plus reimbursement for photographic supply usage and expendables. Usage may be arranged with the Director or the Electron Microscopists.

ROBERTS (DE 413) was launched by the U.S. Navy on January 20, 1944, commissioned on April 28, 1944, and sunk by the Imperial Japanese Navy in the Battle off Samar on October 25, 1944. Why would a destroyer escort that existed for less than one year merit a web site? Read on. Though our crew had only six months in 1944 to get to know one another, we formed bonds that exist today. These bonds will continue, long beyond the time that the last survivor has gone on to join those crew members who were killed when our ship was sunk, so many years ago. Children and other family members have formed strong friendships which will endure. In addition to the families of the original crew, there exists another family involved with the SAMUEL B. ROBERTS. This is the family of officers and men who have served on the namesakes of the DE 413: the destroyer SAMUEL B. ROBERTS (DD 823), and the fast frigate, SAMUEL B. ROBERTS (FFG 58). Additionally, let us not forget the fast frigate, USS COPELAND (FFG 25), named after our Captain, Robert W. He was married in July 1813 in Roane County, TN to MARGARET GARDNER , in the home of her father, James Gardner (b. VA) The ceremony was performed by Chaplain Wesley Walker, a Minister of the Gospel. They had thirteen children born in Roane County. Notes for Robert Samuel Roberts Several court records which mention heirs help to document their children: Wesley William Crowe b: 1822 m: 27 Nov 1849 in Roane Co, TN Elizabeth and her family are found in the Roane censuses for 1850, 60, 70 and 80. Deed Book P, page 661 records a conveyance from Wesley Crow to Edward C. Roberts in 1868. The land was located on Big Emery River and Waldens Ridge. Elizabeth's nephew, Lonnie Burns, is of the opinion that two of the children, Martha A. and Henry C., never married. Elizabeth J. Crow Cofer is buried in Riggs Cemetery in Sugar Grove Valley.

Samuel Alexander Roberts, attorney and government official of the Republic of Texas, qv son of Willis and Asenath (Alexander) Roberts, was born in Putnam County, Georgia, on February 13, 1809. He was raised and educated in Georgia and in Cahaba and Mobile, Alabama, and attended the United States Military Academy, where he was a classmate of Jefferson Davis. qv He moved to Houston, Texas, in 1837, shortly after being licensed to practice law. Roberts came to Texas on the advice of Republic of Texas vice president Mirabeau B. Lamar,qv a family friend, who during 1819 and 1820 had owned a general mercantile store in partnership with Roberts's father in Cahaba. After Lamar was elected president of the republic, Roberts received appointments to a number of government offices during the late 1830s and early 1840s. Lamar appointed Roberts notary public of Harrisburg County on January 23, 1839, secretary of the Texas legation to the United States in March 1839, acting secretary of state on May 25, 1841, and secretary of state on September 7, 1841. On April 8, 1842, Roberts married Lucinda Mary Reed. The couple moved to Bonham, where Roberts entered a law partnership with James W. Throckmorton
