Extractions: Financial Assistance at the Graduate School consists of two major types of aid: institutional aid, for which the Graduate School itself is the funding source, and federal and state aid. With the exception of a few special awards and the Student Employment Program, institutional aid is awarded to students based on the nomination of the doctoral program in which the student is enrolled. Institutional funding is most often in the form of research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and tuition stipends. Federal Aid for graduate students includes Federal Work-Study, Federal Direct Loans, and Federal Perkins Loans. New York State provides the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) for eligible graduate students who are New York State residents. In all cases, Federal and state aid is based solely on financial need. Institutional aid is based on a combination of need and merit. A selected list of scholarships is given below: R.E. Gilleece Grad. Teaching Science/Engineering MAGNET ... H. Rubinstein Robert E. Gilleece Fellowship The Robert E. Gilleece Fellowship, named for the late Assistant Vice President for Student Services, is offered at the time of admission to a select number of incoming students who show exceptional academic potential at The Graduate School. The awardees are chosen by the Gilleece Fellowship Committee based on nominations presented by all Ph.D. Programs. Only academic merit is considered in the selection of Gilleece Fellows. The award consists of full tuition plus $16,000 for each of the first four years of the student's studies at The Graduate School. Renewal of the award each year is contingent upon satisfactory academic progress.

During World War II mathematical work by the Anti-Hitler coalition was part of an aspiration to serve humanity and not help destroy it. At present, it is not an easy task to view the bellicose potentials of mathematics in a proper perspective. At the conference, we will present historical evidence and recent changes in the interaction between mathematics and the military. We will discuss the new mathematically enhanced development of military technology which seems to have changed the very character of modern warfare.

The book is an important contribution to the history of women in the military during WWII, a subject that has received otherwise scant attention to date. Williams relates the initial reluctance on the part of the navy (and the rest of the armed forces for that matter) to admit women into service. Additionally, once it was agreed to let women serve, it was generally expected that they would only be assigned to clerical work or nursing detail. With the overall shortage of personnel, however, it became apparent that more women needed to be hired in technical and skilled areas in some part to replace the men who were called into armed combat. It was for that reason plus a willingness to join in the war effort that these four women elected to apply their expertise and meet the challenges of military service. For there was certainly no guarantee that their efforts would be either recognized or rewarded after the war ended.

Photo courtesy of Jeffrey Shallit Rabin is quoted as saying, We should give up the attempt to derive results and answers with complete certainty. In 1975, Rabin unveiled an algorithm he developed to quickly find very large prime numbers (the algorithm included a very slight possibility of error, although only one in a trillion). This work, based on previous work done by Gary Miller, is considered to be the first use of randomization in mathematics. Along with doctoral student Doug Tygar (now a computing science teacher at the University of California, Berkeley), Rabin went on to develop a computer security model called ITOSS (Integrated Toolkit for Operating System Security). It consisted of tools developers could incorporate into current and future operating systems to protect the operating system and files on a computer from unauthorized access, primaril....
