Hunter put the practice of surgery on a scientific foundation and laid the framework for the twentieth century developments. His saying "Don't think, try the experiment" has inspired generations of modern surgeons. Hunter, youngest of the ten children of John and Agnes Hunter, - the «Hunters of Hunterstown» - as the small settlement of Long Calderwood, near Glasgow, belonged to the Hunters. The house bears a tablet to the effect that he was born on February 13th, 1728. In his life-time the birthday was kept Februar 14th, on which date one drinks to his memory at the Royel College of Surgeons of England. He was probbaly born so late at night that in the hurry-scurry the midwife failed to notice whether he appeared just before or just after the clock struck 12. Petted by his mother, John disliked school and hated books. He received his early education at the grammar school in East Kilbride, but preferred to lead an out-of-door life, looking after nests, insects and animals, whilst his brothers got the same education as country gentlemen. After the death of his father in 1741, when he was 13 years of age, he dropped out of school, and the likelihood of future success was slim. He remained at home and during the next six years his activities, although seemingly aimless, nervertheless provided a knowledge of animal economy that formed the basis of his later studies. He recived no formal education during these years. At the age of seventeen he spent some months with a brother-in-law, a timber merchant and carpenter in Glasgow, and we can well believe he tried his hand with tools; his mother noticed that the lad showed neatness of hands and quickness of perception in anything that regarded mechanism.

Extractions: Sun City West, AZ 85375-4825 Page: ABSTRACT PROLOGUE Early Geodetic Surveys And The British-French Controversy The first geodetic survey of note was observed in France during the latter part of the 17th and early 18th centuries and immediately created a major controversy. Jean Picard began an arc of triangulation near Paris in 1669-70 and continued the work southward until his death about 1683. His work was resumed by the Cassini family in 1700 and completed to the Pyrenees on the Spanish border prior to 1718 when the northern extension to Dunkirk on the English Channel was undertaken. The survey created a major controversy. For the results indicated that the earth was a prolate ellipsoid, which contradicted Issac Newton's 1687 postulate that it was an oblate figure. To resolve the hue and cry that followed, the French Academy of Sciences in Paris proposed in 1733 that the length of the meridian be measured near the equator and compared with that obtained in France. Later it was decided to do the same in the Arctic region. The Torne River valley north of Tornio in Lapland on the Swedish-Finnish border was chosen as the northern site and observations were begun in 1736 and completed two years later.

Extractions: The quadrant is so-called because its arc is a quarter of a circle, corresponding to 90 degrees; mural means that the instrument was designed to be fixed to a wall. It was used to measure the height of stars above the horizon at their transit at the celestial meridian. Before the dividing machine was invented, the divisions on the circular band, called limb, were engraved by hand. In order to ensure the maximum exactness in hand-made graduations and avoid errors in divisions, with repercussions on star position measurements, mural quadrants were built very large. The quadrant of the Specola was made by the famous instrument-maker Jesse Ramsden. Its radius is 8 English feet (244 cm) and the limb is 4 inches (10 cm). On the limb, two kinds of divisions are marked: in degrees, in five-degree segments on the inner edge, and in 96 parts, in sixteenths, on the outer edge. The two scales have their origin at the base of the vertical radius. The measuring angle could be read on both sides, the outer measurement being converted into degrees by means of special tables. This method minimised errors in measuring. The telescope runs along the limb; the acromatic objective has a focal length of 87 cm and an aperture of 70 mm. A wire reticle on the focal plane allows the exact point of the star to be observed.
