Extractions: TRANSCRIPT No results are available yet for the Bosnian elections, held over the weekend. The balloting has been surrounded by delays in the count, lost voter registrations, and low turnout by Muslims in Serb controlled territory. An Independent Television News update is followed by a Newsmaker interview with Ambassador Richard Holbrooke. A RealAudio version of this NewsHour segment is available. Sept. 13, 1996 Browse the NewsHour's Bosnia Index ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: In the elections, Bosnians, Serbs, Muslims, and Croats went to the polls to elect leaders of a unified Bosnian state. Those living in the Muslim-Croat part of Bosnia chose a Muslim and a Croat for the newly created three-member national presidency. Those living in the Bosnian Serb area selected the Serb member. Both groups also chose national and regional legislators. Well talk to Richard Holbrooke, architect of the Dayton Peace Accord, but first this report from Gaby Rado of Independent Television News. GABY RADO: The counting of ballot papers is still going on nearly 48 hours after polling stations closed. Thats partly due to the complex nature of the election, partly to political posturing which delayed the count. One gloomy statistic which did emerge, less than 15,000 out of a possible 200,000 refugees crossed the former front line called the I.E.B.L. This evening, the chief election scrutineer said at least thered been no violence.
Online NewsHour: Milosevic On Trial - February 13, 2002 SPOKESMAN I'm going to interrupt you. GABY rado At that stage, the Britishjudge, richard May, cut off Mr. Milosevic's microphone to ask a question. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/europe/jan-june02/milosevic_2-13.html
Extractions: Independent Television News reporter Gaby Rado has an update on the war crimes trial of Slobodan Milosevic. GABY RADO : This trial always promised surprises and a clashes of wills between Slobodan Milosevic and the judges, and so it turned out. With just half an hour to go before the end of this afternoon's session, the former President of Yugoslavia disdainfully challenged both the legality of the War Crimes Tribunal, and the even- handedness of the men sitting in judgment on him. SPOKESMAN: Mr. Milosevic, it's now your opportunity to address the chamber. SLOBODAN MILOSEVIC (Translated): I challenge the very legality of this tribunal, because it was not set up on the basis of the law. The Security Council could not transfer the right that it does not have to this tribunal, and therefore, this tribunal does not have the competence to try. GABY RADO: Without pausing, the man charged with violating the human rights of hundreds of thousands of people in the Balkans then claimed his own rights had been violated when he was arrested and extradited to the Hague.

Extractions: Next: About this document Richard K. Guy So I believe that I am here to represent the hundreds, probably thousands, of little guys, and of many far from little guys. Aleksandar Ivic, who has written about Erdos far more movingly and far more relevantly than I can, and from whom I've borrowed a number of quotations. For example: ``I most certainly have received more mail from him than from anybody else.'' Many of us can make the same remark. Focus Since he spent most of his waking hours which were many you were likely to be woken at 6:00 a.m. by a phone call or a knock on your hotel room door most of his waking hours and all of his sleeping hours doing mathematics, you could be forgiven for thinking that Erdos was only a mathematician. But he was a very caring human being, with a phenomenal memory, not only for things mathematical he could give you exact references, often including the page numbers, to thousands of papers but also for the names of your spouse your ``boss'' if you were male, or your ``slave'' if you were female and of your ``epsilons'', your children, and he kept in careful touch with the state of their health. He was well-informed on almost any topic of conversation. He probably knew more about the history of your country than you knew yourself. He was constantly making incisive comments on the political situation.

BENNETT (London: Virgin Books, Ltd., 2002) 371 pp., bibliography, photos, index. $29.95 If it is agreed that an encyclopedia should be a compendium of knowledge available at the time of publication, and the author is someone of experience with a detailed understanding of his field, then such books should not only be an essential reference work, but also provide a contemporaneous snapshot of what was known on particular topics at a specific time. Previous titles include Richard Deacons Spyclopaedia (1987); Vincent Buranellis SpyCounterSpy (1982); George OTooles Encyclopedia of American Intelligence and Espionage (1988); Thomas Armss Encyclopedia of the Cold War (1994); Norman Polmars

Peake An Encyclopedic Disappointment Espionage: An Encyclopedia of Spies and Secrets By Richard M. BENNETT (London: Virgin Books, Ltd., 2002) 371 pp., bibliography, photos, index. $29.95 The dust jacket describes Richard BENNETT as an intelligence analyst since 1966, and lists other impressive credentials. Nevertheless, his encyclopedia of espionage, the most recent of the many books in this genre, stands alone as the most error filled by any measure. This is particularly disappointing because reference works of this sort have a special obligation to get it right. In his Preface, David SHAYLERthe former MI5 officer charged with violations of the Official Secrets Actclaims it is a wealth of facts which have never been available in one publication before. James BAMFORD, author of Body of Secrets , writes in the Foreword that BENNETT not only defines the language of spying he also presents comprehensive outlines of the intelligence services of the world today, and biographical sketches of key players, past and present. From these statements one can only conclude that the writers did not read the book or do not know the subject.
