   Extractions: John Pratt attended Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge receiving his B.A. in 1833. He was third Wrangler , an excellent result, and he was elected to a Fellowship. In 1836 he received his M.A. from Christ's and Sidney Sussex College. John's father was secretary of the Church Missionary Society and John left university with two strong drives inside him, one coming from his exceptional scientific ability, the other from the missionary zeal coming through his father. Pratt obtained a chaplaincy appointment with the East India Company in 1838. He remained in India for the rest of his life, becoming chaplain to the Bishop of Calcutta in 1844. Then in 1850 Pratt was appointed Archdeacon of Calcutta. His first work, published in 1836, was The mathematical principles of mechanical philosophy. He revised the work in 1842, then expanded and republished it under the title On attractions

Dennett, says that our brains contain a cobbled-together collection of specialist brain circuits, which . . . conspire together to produce a . . . more or less well-designed virtual machine . . . By yoking these independently evolved specialist organs together in common cause, and thereby giving their union vastly enhanced powers, this virtual machine, this software of the brain, performs a sort of internal political miracle: It creates a virtual captain of the crew . . . Distinguished neuroscientist and Nobel Prize winner Sir John Eccles rejects this theory, saying that it never goes beyond vague generalities; materialists believe that the problems will be resolved when we have a more complete scientific understanding of the brain, perhaps in hundreds of years, a belief which Eccles ironically terms "promissory materialism." As Jean-Jacques Lecercle notes in his excellent book on philosophy and délire Différence et répétition Logique du sens , and, with Félix Guattari, two volumes of Capitalism and Schizophrenia Kafka In English-speaking countries, by contrast, Deleuze, along with Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida Nietzsche Deleuze was born in 1925. He attended the Lycée Carnot in Paris, and studied philosophy at the Sorbonne between 1944 and 1948, where he knew, among others, Michel Butor, Michel Tournier, and François Châtelet. His main teachers were Ferdinand Aliquié ( Descartes Hegel specialist). After gaining his agrégation in philosophy in 1948, Deleuze taught philosophy, until 1957, in various lycées . From 1957 until 1960, he taught the history of philosophy at the Sorbonne, and for four years from 1960 he was a researcher with the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique (CNRS).     Extractions: Power and Resistance in the Social: The Critical Theory of Michel Foucault This paper is intended to be an assessment of the work of Michel Foucault (particularly Foucault 1977, 1979) and a contribution to our understanding of its place within the context of critical social theory. I will provide an exposition of what I see as being the main themes of his work and will then attempt to point to some of the new directions that this leads us to in critical social theory (by which term I am referring to all those positions ranging from the humanism of the Frankfurt school to the structuralism of Louis Althusser which share some affinity with or can be set within the broad parameters of Marxist analysis). And secondly, I think that to understand the appeal of Foucault's work (to some, at least, in the U.K. which was until recently my location), it is necessary to situate this in the context of (a) political developments in Europe: the curtailment of human rights in the East and the failure of elected socialist governments in the West to actually deliver `socialism' (for example, the U.K. Labour administration 1974-9). (b) the point to which critical social theory had advanced in the U.K. in 1978, at which date Discipline and Punish began to be read in criminological circles (which was my point of reference).2 By then, the Althusserian problematic had achieved hegemony which also meant that it was impossible to talk about `the real world'. This had to be translated into the terms set down by scientific Marxism (Althusser 1971; see also Hirst 1975; Young 1976). By contrast Foucault immediately seems far removed from such abstractions when he provides us with, in his own words

Writing for Saussure is even a deformation of language in the sense that it is (through grammar) taken to be a true representation of it, whereas, in fact, the essence of language is only contained, Saussure claimed, in living speech, which is always changing. Derrida interrogates this distinction. As with difference, he notices that both Saussure and the structuralists (cf. Lévi-Strauss) operate with a colloquial notion of writing, one that attempts to evacuate all complexities. Thus writing is assumed to be purely graphic, an aid to memory perhaps, but secondary to speech; it is deemed to be fundamentally phonetic, and so represents the sounds of language. Speech, for its part, is assumed to be closer to thought, and thus to the emotions, ideas, and intentions of the speaker. Speech as primary and more original thus contrasts with the secondary, representative status of writing.     Extractions: Note: the following has been abstracted from the Fifty Key Contemporary Thinkers by John Lechte, Routledge, 1994. Specifically, Merleau-Ponty brought Saussure into his reflections and teachings on language in the late 1940s and early 1950s. During the 1950s, he was also well aware of Saussure's influence on the work of Lévi-Strauss and formed a close alliance with the latter, who eventually became his colleague at the Collège de France. From 1952, Merleau-Ponty began to develop a conception of political activity which freed itself from Sartre's naive flirtation with hard-line communism. More importantly, though, Merleau-Ponty began to sketch out a philosophical trajectory which confirmed the importance of lived experience in grasping the nature of language, perception, and the body. An outline of the main aspects of the link between perception and thought opened up in the Philosophy of Perception will help to clarify what is at stake here. "we fix our eyes steadily upon the sphere of Consciousness and study what it is that we find immanent in it.... Consciousness in itself has a being of its own which in its absolute uniqueness of nature remains unaffected by the phenomenological disconnexion." Merleau-Ponty's point of departure is Husserl's epoché. For him, however, the aim is not to remain with the structure of Descartes's philosophy of doubt, as Husserl tends to do in providing an explanation of phenomenology, but rather to go to the heart of embodied experience, which is what perception is. Pitting himself directly against the abstractness and emptiness of the Cartesian cogito - 'I think, therefore I am' - Merleau-Ponty shows that 'to be a body is to be tied to a certain world'; and he adds: 'our body is not primarily in space: it is of it'. In effect, our body is always already in the world; therefore, there is no body in-itself, a body which could be objectified and given universal status. Perception, then, is always an embodied perception, one that is what it is only within a specific context or situation. Perception in-itself does not exist.
