First edition of this monumental work which in essence established the modern age of geology. Playfair believed, and rightly so, that his friend James Hutton's Theory of the Earth was the geological equivalent of Newton's Principia, but that it must be restated and elaborated on without its author's religious ideology and heavy prose. Playfair set out to discover what evidence existed in the earth itself that would shed light on the history of the planet, and sets forth his findings with an orderly, logical arrangement and remarkable precision: "...for precision of statement and felicity of language, it has no superior" (Geikie).
