Extractions: Ninth century Euclid's Elements, written about 300 B.C., a comprehensive treatise on geometry, proportions, and the theory of numbers, is the most long-lived of all mathematical works. This manuscript preserves an early version of the text. Shown here is Book I Proposition 47, the Pythagorean Theorem: the square on the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares on the sides. This is a famous and important theorem that receives many notes in the manuscript. Archimedes, Works ca. 1458 In the early 1450s, Pope Nicholas V commissioned Jacobus de Sancto Cassiano Cremonensis to make a new translation of Archimedes with the commentaries of Eutocius. This became the standard version and was finally printed in 1544. This early and very elegant manuscript may have been in the possession of Piero della Francesca before coming to the library of the Duke of Urbino. The pages displayed here show the beginning of Archimedes' On Conoids and Spheroids with highly ornate, and rather curious, illumination.

Source(s) of Funding: Hang Seng Bank Golden Jubilee Education Fund for Research Start Date: March 1998 Abstract: It is commonly accepted that the language deficiencies existing in Chinese magazines and newspapers have an adverse effect on the language proficiency of the general public. The first year students of the Department of Chinese, The University of Hong Kong, should in general have a good command in the Chinese language. This research targets on how and in what way, if any, the media has affected them with the aim to identify any remedies that may be required. Results obtained from this project could be beneficial to both our students and the paper media. With proper analysis, teaching approaches and methods could be more precisely designed.

Twain's fictional Yankee predicting an eclipse to save himself from being burned at the stake may sound silly in the late 20 th century, but eclipses have a long history as omens or portents of evil. More Stories Even Christopher Columbus predicted a lunar eclipse on Feb 29, 1504 to get the inhabitants of Jamaica to cooperate with him during one of his visits to the New World. The islanders refused to supply him and his sailors with food, so Columbus recalled an upcoming lunar eclipse and told the natives he would make the moon change color and lose its light. The eclipse astonished the natives. Food and support was forthcoming. Columbus was even raised to a rank of a god.

These vernacular editions, grouped around the first Latin edition of 1482, are displayed in chronological sequence, from 1533 (Greek) to 1594 (Arabic). All copies are opened at Book I, proposition 47, "Pythagoras' Theorem," which asserts: "In right-angled triangles the square of the side opposite the right angle is equal to the sum of the squares of the sides containing the right angle." Most of the translations provide proof of this equation (a + b = c using a geometrical construction known as "the bride's chair." Euclid's Elements of Geometry has been a primary mathematics text for more than two thousand years. It is a compilation of early Greek mathematical knowledge, synthesized and systematically presented by Euclid in ca. 300 BC. Books I-IV are devoted to plane geometry, Book V deals with the theory of proportions, and Book VI with the similarity of plane figures. Books VII-IX are on number theory, Book X on commensurability and incommensurability, Books XI-XII explore three dimensional geometric objects, and Book XIII deals with the construction of the five regular solids. Later non-Euclidian additions include, Book XIV, which is thought to have been contrbuted by Hypsciles (ca. 200 BC), and Book XV, which may have been added by John of Damascus, or by a 6th-century pupil of Isadoros of Miletos.
