Extractions: Georg Simon Ohm : 1787 - 1854 The German physicist Georg Simon Ohm, b. Mar. 16, 1789, d. July 6, 1854, for whom the unit of electrical resistance, the ohm, was named, determined (1826) Ohm's law, the relationship between the flow of current, the voltage, and the resistance in a closed circuit Ohm's scientific contemporaries were slow to recognize his achievement, failing to realize how closely his conclusions were derived from careful experimental work and especially how his discovery ordered vast quantities of existing experimental data. For most of his life Ohm held only indifferent, poorly paid teaching jobs, but in 1852 he was given the chair of physics at the University of Munich. J. Z. Fullmer Source: The New Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia Although Georg Simon Ohm discovered one of the most fundamental laws of current electricity, he was virtually ignored for most of his life by scientists in his own country - Germany. Born in Erlangen, Bavaria, Ohm's ambition was to become a scientist and to work at one of the great German Universities. Ohms' father was a mechanical engineer and taught him basic practical skills that later proved useful. Ohm became professor of mathematics at the Jesuit College of Cologne in 1817. Between 1825 and 1827, he produced a mathematical description of conduction in circuits modelled on Fourier's study of heat conduction. Ohm's main interest however was current electricity, recently advanced by Alessandro Volta's invention of the battery. For his experiments, he made his own metal wire, producing a range of thicknesses and lengths of remarkably consistent quality.

His mission towards antiquity reminds us of Scott, buthe is, as a poet, a better artist than Scott; he has sometimes touches of exquisite diction and of overwrought sensibility which recall Coleridge to us. In his wide ambition and profuseness he possessed some characteristics of Southey, although his style has far more vitality. With all his faults he was a very great writer, and one of the principal pioneers of the romantic movement in Europe. (E. C.) Its chief manufactures are cutlery and hardware, and there are iron-foundries and flour-mills. Other industries are brewing, dyeing, weaving and brick-making. Before 1891 it was known as Merscheid. OHMMETER an electrical instrument employed for measuring insulation-resistance or other high electrical resistances. For the purpose of measuring resistances up to a few thousand ohms, the most convenient appliance is a Wheatstones Bridge (qv), but when the resistance of the conductor to be measured is several hundred thousand ohms, or if it is the resistance of a so-called insulator, such as the insulating covering of the copper wires employed for distributing electric current in houses and buildings for electric lighting, then the ohmmeter is more con, venient. An ohmmeter in one form cOnsists of two pairs of coils, one pair called the series coil and the other called the shunt coil. These coils are placed with their axes at right angles to one another, and at the point where the axes intersect a small pivoted needle of soft iron is placed, carrying a longer index needle moving over a scale.

Extractions: Georg Simon Ohm Born: 16 March 1789 in Erlangen, Bavaria (now Germany) Died: 6 July 1854 in Munich, Bavaria, Germany Georg Simon Ohm's father was a rather remarkable man who had educated himself to a high level and was able to give his sons an excellent education through his own teachings and brought them to a high standard in mathematics, physics, chemistry and philosophy. Ohm went to Switzerland where, in September 1806, he took up a post as a mathematics teacherin a school in Gottstadt bei Nydau. His private studies had stood him in good stead for he received a doctorate from Erlangen on 25 October 1811 and immediately joined the staff as a mathematics lecturer. On 11 September 1817 Ohm received an offer of the post of teacher of mathematics and physics at the Jesuit Gymnasium of Cologne. It had a well equipped physics laboratory. As he had done for so much of his life, Ohm continued his private studies reading the texts of the leading French mathematicians Lagrange, Legendre, Laplace, Biot and Poisson. He began his own experimental work in the school physics laboratory after he had learnt of Oersted's discovery of electromagnetism in 1820. In fact he had already convinced himself of the truth of what we call today "Ohm's law" namely the relationship that the current through most materials is directly proportional to the potential difference applied across the material. Ohm's firsts paper published in 1825 examines the decrease in the electromagnetic force produced by a wire as the length of the wire increased. In two important papers in 1826, Ohm gave a mathematical description of conduction in circuits.
