Extractions: Florence Nightingale David August 23, 1909 - July 23, 1993 Fortunately, Davids perseverance paid off quickly when in 1933 she was offered a job by Karl Pearson to work as a research assistant in his laboratory at the University College in London. Pearson made sure Davids college scholarship was extended and served as a source of encouragement for her. Two years later she became an assistant lecturer for the colleges Statistics Department and then received her doctorate in statistics from there in 1938. In 1939, David made the most out of the opportunities brought forth by World War II. She became an experimental officer and senior statistician for the Research and Experiments Department, was scientific advisor on mines for the Military Experimental Establishment and served as a member on the Land Mines Committee, Ministry of Home Security and Scientific Advisory Council. David felt that the war gave women more opportunities and that conditions for them are now better because of it. After the war, David continued her job as lecturer at the University College in London until 1962 when she became a professor. The college had a society for scientists on the faculty, but David was not a member because it did not include women. Therefore, David took a stand and founded a scientific society that included both men and women. At the same time, David also became a visiting professor and research statistician for the Department of Statistics and Applied Climatology and Forestry Division at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1968 she was offered a job as professor and chair of the Department of Biostatistics at the University of California at Riverside. David became the chair of the department of statistics in 1970. Seven years later, she retired from Riverside and became professor emeritus and research associate in Biostatistics at the University of California at Berkeley.

Extractions: Florence Nightingale is best remembered for her work as a nurse during the Crimean War and her contribution towards the reform of the sanitary conditions in military field hospitals. However, what is less well known about this amazing woman is her love of mathematics, especially statistics, and how this love played an important part in her life's work. Named after the city of her birth, Nightingale was born at the Villa Colombia in Florence, Italy, on the 12th May 1820. Her parents, William Edward Nightingale and his wife Frances, were touring Europe for the first two years of their marriage. Nightingale's elder sister had been born in Naples the year before. The Nightingales' gave their first born the Greek name for the city, which was Panthenope. William Nightingale had been born with the surname Shore. He had changed it to Nightingale after inheriting from a rich relative, Peter Nightingale of Lea, near Matlock, Derbyshire. The girls grew up in the country spending much of their time at Lea Hurst in Derbyshire. When Nightingale was about five years old her father bought a house called Embley near Romsey in Hampshire. This now meant that the family spent the summer months in Derbyshire, while the rest of the year was spent at Embley. Between these moves there were trips to London, the Isle of Wight and to relatives.

Extractions: Rural Hygiene Florence Nightingale (18201910), usually presented as a sort of secular saint for her work on improving nursing during the Crimean War (1851-1854), is an example of woman who turned away from conventional domesticity to engage in a career. After Crimea, Nightingale, using very unsentimental statistical data, worked in the area of public health, hospital administration, and sanitary reform. We will now deal with the PRESENT STATE OF RURAL HYGIENE, which is indeed a pitiful and disgusting story, dreadful to tell. For the sake of giving actual facts,-it is no use lecturing upon drainage, watersupply, wells, pigsties, storage of excrement, storage of refuse, etc., etc., in general; they are dreadfully concrete,-I take leave to give the facts of one rural district, consisting of villages and one small market town, as described by a Local Government Board official this year; and I will ask the ladies here present whether they could not match these facts in every county in the kingdom. Perhaps, too, the lady lecturers on Rural Hygiene will favour us with some of their experiences. A large number of the poorcottages have been recently condemned as "unfit for human habitation," but though "unfit" many are still "inhabited," from lack of other accommodation.
