    Extractions: From: Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships Simon Newcomb Simon Newcomb in born in Wallace, Nova Scotia in 1835 - came to the United States in 1853. He soon met Joseph Henry who encouraged him to study mathematics and astronomy. In January 1857, Newcomb became a mathematician in the Nautical Almanac Office at Harvard University. On 21 September 1861, the young man was commissioned Professor of Mathematics in the United States Navy which he served until 1897 when he retired as a Captain. During his service, he won great renown as a mathematician and an astronomer. In 1906, Newcomb was promoted to Rear Admiral. He died in Washington on 11 July l909. (YMS-263: dp. 245 1. 136', b. 23'4", dr. 8'7" s. 14 k.; cpl. 27; a. 1 3"; cl. Admirable YMS-263 was laid down on 21 August 1942 by the South Coast Co., Newport Beach, Calif.; launched on 2 November 1942; and commissioned on 11 August 1943. YMS-263 completed fitting out and shakedown in the San Diego area from 15 October to 3 November. She then performed sweeping operations in Los Angeles Harbor until sailing for Kauai, T.H., on 5 January 1944. From Hawaii, the sweeper was ordered to the Marshall Islands to sweep during the amphibious assault on Kwajalein and Majuro Atolls from 31 January to 8 February. Majuro was the sweeper's main base during the next 11 months. From July to December, she made escort trips to Tarawa and Eniwetok. On 6 December 1944, she was ordered to return to San Pedro Calif., via Johnston Island and Pearl Harbor.

    Extractions: Newcomb was born in the village of Wallace, Nova Scotia, March 12, 1835. His father, who was a teacher, gave him his elementary education; and at the age of eighteen we find him teaching a country school in Maryland. Two years later, a position as computer on the "Nautical Almanac" brought him to Cambridge, Mass., where he studied in Harvard University till 1861, when he was appointed professor of mathematics in the United States Navy. He remained in the government service till he was retired as a rear admiral in 1897, having served besides as professor of mathematics and astronomy in Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, from 1884. Newcomb's chief labors were in the department of mathematical astronomy, and were directed toward the explanation of the observed movements of the heavenly bodies. The difficulty and complexity of the calculations involved are beyond the conception of the layman; and the achievements which brought Newcomb honors from the learned of almost all civilized countries have to be taken on trust by the general. He had, nevertheless, an admirable power of clear exposition of those parts of his subject which were capable of popularization; and the accompanying paper is a good example of the simple treatment of a large subject. Newcomb's interests extended beyond his special field, and he wrote with vigor and originality on finance and economics, and played a leading part in the general intellectual life of his time. When he died in the midst of his labors on July 11, 1909, he left a place at the head of American science that will not easily be filled.
