Among his inventions was an early traffic signal, that greatly improved safety on America's streets and roadways. Indeed, Morgan's technology was the basis for modern traffic signal systems and was an early example of what we know today as Intelligent Transportation Systems. The Inventor's Early Life . The son of former slaves, Garrett A. Morgan was born in Paris, Kentucky on March 4, 1877. His early childhood was spent attending school and working on the family farm with his brothers and sisters. While still a teenager, he left Kentucky and moved north to Cincinnati, Ohio in search of opportunity. Although Morgan's formal education never took him beyond elementary school, he hired a tutor while living in Cincinnati and continued his studies in English grammar.

La famille quitta bientot pour l'Angleterre ou il sera enseigné dans des écoles privées le Latin, le Grècque, l'Hébreu, et les mathématiques. Il détestait les examens. Il entra à Trinity Collège, Cambridge en 1823. Quatre ans plus tard, il refusa de poursuivre ses études n'aimant pas l'aspect compétitif des masters. Refusant l'ambition de ses parents de faire un pretre de lui, Augustus de Morgan, joua d'abord avec l'idée d'étudier la médecine, ensuite la loi. Mais il décida enfin que sa vocation était de devenir mathématicien. Il deviendra premier professeur à UCL (University College London), en 1928. Son temps passé là ne fut pas des plus tranquilles, il résigna de sa poste par principe après qu'un de ses collègues fut jeté dehors sans explication. Il reprit la place 5 ans plus tard lorsque son remplacent mourut. Mais il allait encore abandonner son poste en 1861. En temps que professeur, il avait une réputation de rendre les maths vivantes et intéressant pour ses élèves.

He received his B.A. but a theological test was required for the M.A., something to which De Morgan strongly objected. In 1826, he returned to his home in London and entered Lincoln's Inn to study for the Bar. In 1827, he applied for the chair of mathematics in the newly founded University College in London and, despite having no mathematical publications, he was appointed. He wrote a popular book Elements of arithmetic in 1830. In 1849, he published Trigonometry and double algebra , in which he gave a geometric interpretation of complex numbers. He also wrote a popular calculus book. In 1838, he defined and introduced the term "mathematical induction", putting a process that had been used without clarity on a rigorous basis. He recognized the purely symbolic nature of algebra and he was aware of the existence of algebras other than ordinary algebra. He introduced De Morgan's laws and his greatest contribution is as a reformer of mathematical logic. In 1866, he was a co-founder of the London Mathematical Society and became its first president. In the same year De Morgan was elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. De Morgan was never a Fellow of the Royal Society, as he refused to let his name be put forward. He also refused an honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh.

In addition, he had many contributions to the field of mathematics and the chronicling of the history of mathematics. Augustus De Morgan was born in Mandura, India, on June 27, 1806. His father was a colonel in the Indian Army. His family soon moved to England where they lived first at Worcester and then at Taunton. His early education was in private schools where he learned Latin, Greek, Hebrew, mathematics and a dislike of exams. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1823 and graduated four years later. Extractions: Augustus De Morgan 's wife, writing after his death described how the London Mathematical Society was founded:- It was in the year 1864 that Mr Arthur Cowper Ranyard and George [George De Morgan, Augustus De Morgan's son] were discussing mathematical problems during a walk in the streets, when it struck them that it would be very nice to have a Society to which discoveries in mathematics could be brought, and where things could be discussed like the Astronomical. It was agreed between the young men that this should be proposed and that George should ask his father to take the chair at the first meeting. At a preliminary meeting to discuss setting up the Society on 7 November 1864, the name London Mathematical Society was chosen. In fact this was meant to be the first proper meeting of the Society but Augustus De Morgan was ill and could not attend. The chair at this preliminary meeting was taken by T A Hirst and the date for the first meeting proper was set for 16 January 1865. At the 16 January 1865 meeting the chair was taken by Augustus De Morgan who gave the first address setting out what the aims and practices of the Society should be. This meeting was attended by 27 mathematicians who were joined as members by a further 43 during the first year of the Society.
