The mathematical equation is known as The Mobius Transformation, also known as bilinear transformation or linear fractional transformation. Extractions: We know him more for his invention of the Mobius strip , a strip of paper with one end rotated by 180 degrees and connected to the other end, forming a continuous surface, but August Ferdinand Mobius was also an astronomer. Born in 1790 in Germany, he studied law at the University of Leipzig before abandoning it in favor of astronomy. In 1816 he was appointed professor of astronomy at Leipzig and in 1848 became the director of its observatory. But he had a political slant as well. One of his favorite lectures was one in which he delivered the "four color problem": "What is the least number of colors needed on a plane map to separate clearly neighboring political regions?" He maintained that it was 4, and to this day no map requiring 5 colors has been found. This was verified in 1976 using a computer proof.

Introduction The properties of a twisted strip of paper depend a great deal on the number of times it is twisted. Counting the twists is an interesting exercise that illustrates Paul's first mathematical principle,"Counting is difficult." Material scissors tape 2 felt tip pens in different colors Part 1 Warming up To Do and Notice Look at your the strip of paper. Count the edges: Start coloring an edge at one point with your pen, if you color the entire edge and never have to lift the pen from the paper then the paper has one edge. A pointy vertex does not divide an edge into two parts. Count the sides: Start coloring one side, fill it with color but don't cross over any sharp edges. When you are done, one side will be colored the other will not. So, the strip has 2 sides. A simpler way to test for the number of sides is to draw a line along one side. If any point can be reached from the line without crossing an edge then that point is on the same side as the line. Draw a line on one side of the paper, points on the other side cannot be reached without crossing an edge, this means the paper has two sides.

Extractions: The artists have exhibited extensively internationally but this is the first opportunity for the UK gallery-going public to see their work. The exhibition also underlines the power of creative processes in precipitating active doing as much as passive seeing. Thus, a number of the exhibits involve viewer participation. Diogo Teixeira and Eurico do Vale's "Flying Carousel" is a case in point, an installation comprised of a bicycle and a metallic carousel requiring the leg power of the individual in the saddle to creatively power the carousel into a spinning cinema show; a form of filmic umbrella merry-go-round on wheels. As well as installations by these five artists, live performances of music and video projection by the group De Mobius will take place at the Blue Elephant Gallery at 7pm on 30th July, 2nd August and the 5th August.

With the Grandmother paradox we essentially have a time with a Grandmother and a time without. Also if you follow the description in quotes at the top of this page it appears that one follows the other and loops back to the beginning. We can use the Mobius Strip and adapt it to show a possible interpretation of how Time is twisted in the Grandmother paradox. This is difficult to show on a two-dimensional computer screen or paper so you will need to construct one by printing out the diagram below. You will need scissors, sticky tape and glue. Follow the instructions and then read the description that follows below. Starting at point A in 1960 the Grandmother is 40. Move to the right through the twentieth century to 1990 when the Grandmother dies at 70. Then in 1999 the Time Traveller makes his trip to 1930 and kills his Grandmother. Follow along moving to the right again through the twentieth century noticing how this time there is no Grandmother and continue all the way to 1999. This time there is no time trip because there is no time traveller. He was not born because his Grandmother did not exist So he could not kill his Grandmother so she does exist and she is 10. Move to the right again through the twentieth century back to point A in 1960 where the Grandmother is 40. And so on......
