At the luncheon, AWC honored Betty Holberton, one of the original ENIAC programmers and a long-time leader in the programming and standards community. Ms. Holberton's gracious acceptance speech appears in this show and she shares some memorable stories about computing's early days. Her father was the popular and controversial English poet, Lord Byron and her mother was Annabella Milbanke. Their marriage was an unhappy one ending when Annabella left her husband's house taking one-month-old Ada with her. Ada's grandparents generously took her in while her mother traveled around Europe, on doctor's advice, in order to keep healthy. Her mother, Lady Byron, had always loved mathematics. She was nicknamed by Byron, the "Princess of Parallelograms." Ada's mother wanted her to be just as interested in math and so hired her old tutor, William Frend. Frend was especially good at astronomy and algebra, but would have nothing to do with imaginary or negative numbers. He believed that taking an interest in this newer mathematics would make one superstitious. Ada asked Frend questions that he didn't understand and was independently studying higher mathematics (including negative and imaginary numbers). A terrible case of measles left Ada's legs temporarily paralyzed and she was bedridden for months. She, however, did not mind her condition too much because it allowed her to pay close attention to her work without interruptions. When Ada was seventeen she was ready to "come out." This meant an introduction to the King and Queen and that she was ready for marriage. Ada loved dancing at the balls and all the people she met. At one social event she met the acclaimed professor of mathematics, Charles Babbage. Babbage had invented the "Difference Engine" which could do addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. Ada was enthralled with Babbage and his ideas.

We also know that like many other young women of her time that she enjoyed concerts, theatres, and parties. In other words she was a very well rounded individual. At the age of seventeen Ada was introduced to Mary Somerville, a mathematician whom Ada deeply admired. Mrs. Somerville encouraged Ada in her mathematical studies. It was through Mrs. Somerville that Ada met her future husband. Marriage and children Ada Byron was married at nineteen to a man who was eleven years her senior. This man was William Lord King who soon became the Earl of Lovelace. They enjoyed a warm and caring relationship. Lord Lovelace took a keen interest in his wife's work and was very supportive. Intellectually, Ada was superior , regardless, it created no problem in their marriage. Lord Lovelace accepted his wife's talents and took pride in her many accomplishments.

Ada Lovelace 1815-1852 Table of Contents Lady Byron, Ada's mother, raised Ada to be mathematician and scientist. From an early age, Ada showed much interest and promise at an early age. In 1838, Ada took interest in Charles Baggage's studies on an analytical engine. Charles Babbage had been receiving government support for developing a difference engine. This engine was used to produce a table of trigonometric values for the British Navy to navigate. Charles, instead, used this funding to develop an analytical engine. In 1840, Babbage was invited to present a series of lectures on his analytical engine at the University of Italy. These lectures were recorded and published by a lieutenant Luigi Menabrea in French. Lieutenant Menabura later became the prime minister of Italy. Ada caught on to the concept of Babbage's engine and proposed to Babbage that she would translate these lectures into English. Babbage was taken by how well Ada had understood the plans and told Ada to add her own notes to the translation. Babbage and Ada corresponded through letters. Ada's notes became more mathematically significant than Babbage's original lecture notes. Through these notes, Ada outlined the upcoming fundamentals of computer science, over 100 years before they were put to use.

She died at the age of thirty-six, like her father, was prone to bursts of energy, and had poetic tendencies, which she related to her mother later in her life. Though she was not to be with her father throughout her life, and in fact never got to know her father at all. Her father, had had been accused of taking his half-sister to be his mistress, and the controversy surrounding this ended his marriage to Adas mother, less than 5 weeks after Ada had been born. Her mother apparently did not want her daughter to turn out like her father, and therefore taught her disdain for her artistic talents, and instead nurtured her mathematical and scientific abilities. To further subdue her daughters non-conforming ideas, she fed Ada a laudanum-laced tonic, which created an addiction, and most likely did not help the illnesses which plagued Adas life (Rheingold, 1985). She is often regarded as the first computer programmer, by helping to develop a machine thought of by Charles Babbage, which she helped him to develop, though sadly was not finished within her, or even his lifetime. This story though is not necessarily true, as a few of my sources related, that Babbage, having designed the machine in the first place would no doubt have already written some programs for his Analytical Engine, before Ada. This is inconsequential except to those who care that someone have done something first. The entire issue is eclipsed by the fact that Ada Lovelace was a very good mathematician and further intelligent enough to understand the potential of Charles Babbages ideas at the first demonstration of the Difference Engine, where she met Charles Babbage and spoke to him at length about the Engine. Babbage noted after this meeting that "She seems to understand it better than I do, and is far, far better at explaining it."(Rheingold, 1985)

She was however determined at an early age to study mathematics and was fortunate to have friends and family who recognized her talent in mathematics and encouraged her to pursue her intense interest. Lady Byron, Ada's mother, was herself always interested in math and had started Ada early in her studies of the subject. Ada's tutors included such noteables as Augustus De Morgan, William Frend and Mary Somerville, Ada's favorite. Some people were of the opinion that Lady Byron had an ulterior motive for this early intervention in Ada's education. Ada's father was Lord Byron, the famous English poet, who was known to be fiercely tempermental, passionate and even slightly mad. Lady Byron encouraged Ada's mathematical studies partially to control some of the too-passionate emotions Ada had inherited from her father. Ada hardly knew her father. Her parents were complete opposites and the marriage was unstable from the beginning. When Ada was only a few months old, Lord Byron wrote a note to Lady Byron and told her to take Ada and return to her parents. He never saw Ada again. Ada was from an upper class family who spent the winter season in London. It was during one of these trips that Ada, 18, first met Charles Babbage, a widely-known inventor and scientist, whom she was to one day work very closely with. Babbage was displaying his current invention, the Difference Engine, one of the earliest forerunners to the modern computer. Unlike the average sightseer to Babbage's studio, Ada really understood the workings of the Difference Engine and saw it's great beauty and potential.
