Supposing, for instance, that the fundamental relations of pitched sounds in the science of harmony and of musical composition were susceptible of such expression and adaptations, the engine might compose elaborate and scientific pieces of music of any degree of complexity or extent.

Extractions: Fall 1996 (Vol. 18, No. 3) p p. 4-12 Ada Byron, Lady Lovelace, An Analyst and Metaphysician Betty Alexandra Toole There may be controversy about when the computer revolution began, but to me a revolution begins with an idea, and that idea was Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine conceived in 1834. The computer revolution also began with a woman, Augusta Ada Byron, Lady Lovelace, who wrote an article in 1843 that not only gave us descriptive, analytical, contextual, and metaphysical information about the Analytical Engine but also the first "program." Her prescient comments have stood the test of time. Augusta Ada Byron, Lady Lovelace (1815-1852), is regarded by some people as the first programmer and by others as a science fiction archetype, perhaps as "mad and bad" as her illustrious father, Lord Byron. At the very least, Ada is one of the most colorful characters in computer history. Extractions: Born in Middlesex, Ada was the only legitimate daughter of the flamboyant poet Lord Byron. Her parents separated soon after her birth and her father left England for ever. At first she was tutored privately, then self-taught. Later she was helped by Augustus De Morgan, the first professor of mathematics at the University of London. She first became interested in Charles Babbage's computing machines in 1833 when aged just 17 she met him at a party. Nine years later she read "Notions sur la machine analytique de Charles Babbage", an article written in French by the Italian military engineer Luigi Federico Menabrea. She was so impressed by it that in 1842 she went on to translate the 20-page article into English as "Elements of Charles Babbage's Analytical Machine" as well as adding 50 pages of notes to explain it. She even added a description on how the proposed engine could compute Bernoulli numbers. To her "the Analytical Engine weaves algebraic patterns, just as the Jacquard-loom weaves flowers and leaves." This was the first publicity that Babbage's engines got in England and later she became Babbage's public advocate. She merely signed her work with the initials A.A.L. Some say she used initials because Victorians frowned upon intelligent women. This may be so. However, it is worth remembering that Victorian writers often often used initials and nom de plumes.

Extractions: "Forget this world and all its troubles and if possible its multitudinous Charlatans - everything in short but the Enchantress of Numbers" - Charles Babbage - In this quote Charles Babbage, a prominent scientist of the 19th century, is speaking of his close friend, a woman who was later described as "one of the most picturesque characters in computer history". Who was the Enchantress of Numbers? and learn about Young Ada's curiosity, originality and imagination blossomed into a passionate desire for a path in "poetical science". Her untimely death would not allow the wish for a profession in mathematics or music to be fulfilled, yet Ada's insights were nevertheless destined to foreshadow the essential nature of the field we know today as computer science.. Extractions: The story of Ada Lovelace has all the makings of a PBS costume drama. Her short life in the early 1800s was full of grand events, great thoughts, and famous people. Her father was the mad, bad, and dangerous poet and adventurer Lord Byron, and her social circle included luminaries such as Queen Victoria and Charles Dickens. She was also a colorful character in her own righta mathematical whiz and something of a gambler. But her most important contributions stemmed from her collaboration with inventor Charles Babbage, who designed the first large-scale computers, the Difference Engine and Analytical Engine. Ambassador of the Geeks So why does Ada Lovelace get to be dubbed influential when her mentor Babbage doesn't make the cut? It's simple. Almost no one understood Babbage's ideas, and he never saw any of his plans to fruition. Ada not only fully understood the potential of Babbage's Analytical Engine, she also explained and interpreted it to the English-speaking world. Her translation of a fairly obscure Italian article about the Analytical Engine was three times longer than the original, swollen with her commentary about the device's importance. She suggested that with the correct instruction, Babbage's machine might compose musica wild notion for a machine which most saw as a souped-up mechanical abacus. And she had the contacts and the charisma to spread the word.

Extractions: She became involved with Charles Babbage's Analytical Machine and translated and annotated Luigi Federico Menabrea's description of it ("Notions sur la machine analytique de Charles Babbage" (1842), translated as "Elements of Charles Babbage's Analytical Machine"). De annotations took more space than Menabrea's description and an important addition was her analysis of how the analytical machine could be programmed to calculate Bernoulli numbers. This is why she was regarded as the first computer programmer in the twentieth century. After the birth of her third child she suffered a mental collapse and her doctors gave her a prescription for a combination of alcohol and drugs, among them laudanum. She had hallucinations and at one time thought she was communicating with God. She managed to stop using the drugs, but then started to bet on horse races. She used Babbage to bring her money to the bookmakers to hide her gambling habit. Af the time she was dying of cancer she was in debt as well as being blackmailed.

Extractions: Not much seems to be written about Ada's youth. We know her mathematical aptitude was certainly recognized and encouraged by her mother. We also know that like many other young women of her time that she enjoyed concerts, theatres, and parties. In other words she was a very well rounded individual. At the age of seventeen Ada was introduced to Mary Somerville, a mathematician whom Ada deeply admired. Mrs. Somerville encouraged Ada in her mathematical studies. It was through Mrs. Somerville that Ada met her future husband. Ada Byron was married at nineteen to a man who was eleven years her senior. This man was William Lord King who soon became the Earl of Lovelace. They enjoyed a warm and caring relationship. Lord Lovelace took a keen interest in his wife's work and was very supportive. Intellectually, Ada was superior , regardless, it created no problem in their marriage. Lord Lovelace accepted his wife's talents and took pride in her many accomplishments.

From agriculture to computer technology women, as well as men, have made significant contributions with their inventions. But if you want to learn more about the subject, you might have difficulty finding the facts.Appalled at the lack of material on women inventors, author Autumn Stanley spent 10 years researching "Mothers and Daughters of Invention: Notes for a Revised History of Technology" , published in 1993. "Women invent and their inventions are as significant and wide-ranging as men's, " said Stanley.
