Jacques Louis Lions We have said that Jacques Louis lions was a man of vision. The first one was hisson's pierrelouis' own achievements, that earned him a Field medal in 1994. http://www.autsubmit.com/editorials/ed38_4.html
Extractions: Automatica, April 2002, Volume 38, No. 4 By J-P. Martin. Courtesy Collège de France Jacques Louis Lions was born on May, 3, 1928, in the city of Grasse, in southern France. He died on May, 17, 2001 in Paris. He was buried in Grasse, his all time home town. To the official administrative world, he will be remembered as the founder of the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique INRIA [2] born from IRIA in 1980, and that he shaped for the next 20 years although he remained its President for only four years (19801984), the President of the CNES French space agency (1984-1992), the President of countless scientific bodies, including the French Académie des Sciences (1997-1999) and the scientific board of the Office National de la Météorologie, and the inspirer of many more initiatives. He was made Commandeur de la Légion d'Honneur, an extremely high distinction. But to his co-workers and friends, he will be much more remembered as a man of great vision and wisdom, always available when you would need his advice, with a solid sense of humour even in serious situations and a great care for individuals. He was such a nice personality that his charm would operate on everybody around him, from clerks to angered union leaders, who would feel that they had really been listened to and taken seriously. This man, who accomplished more in any time span than several of us together, never seemed to be in a hurry. One should also notice his keen interest for international cooperations with less developed countries. He is also quoted as the first French mathematician (together with Laurent Schwartz) to get in touch with the Italian mathematical community after World War 2, a typical instance, together with his very strong involvement in the Global Change program including its political aspects, of his active, though always modest, concern for peace and friendship in this world.

Jacques-Louis Lions was a scientist of remarkable prescience and immense energy, with vision that extended to the development of entire areas of the mathematical sciences. He understood that mathematics could make contributions to science, and worked to see this potential realized. The founder of the French school of applied mathematics, he also had considerable influence on mathematicians and mathematical institutions worldwide. His mathematical legacy includes 20 books and nearly 600 papers. Beyond all his personal achievements, his greatest satisfaction came from the success of his son Pierre-Louis, who was awarded a Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich in 1994. Jacques-Louis Lions was born and grew up in Grasse, a charming town in the south of France known for the flowers it provides to the French perfume industry. His father was mayor of Grasse for nearly thirty years. Jacques-Louis's wife and lifelong companion Andrée was also born and grew up in the south of France; they met during World War II, when both were active in the Résistance.

It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

He was successively professor at lUniversité de Nancy, lUniversité de Paris and at lÉcole Polytechnique, and then held a Chair at the Collège de France (Emeritus from 1998). He served as the Secretary General of the International Mathematical Union, and then as its President. He was a member of lAcadémie des Sciences de Paris, and was its President for two years. While teaching and carrying on his research he was INRIAs President and CEO (from 1980-84) and then President of the French Space Agency (CNES) from 1984-92. He was the proud father of Pierre-Louis Lions who is a Field Medalist (IMU, 1994). In his last years Jacques-Louis Lions was highly solicited by industry, being a board member or scientific consultant to several large corporations (Pechiney, Saint-Gobain, Dassault, France Telecom and others). A tireless worker he was always willing to listen to young scientists and to comment on the work they submitted to him. The application of control theory in PDEs led to development of shape optimisation using FEM methods. Based on control theory, he introduced the notion of sentinels for the study of pollution in rivers. Control theory was also at the origin of the analysis of finite time controls of dynamical problems (motivated by problems in satellite stabilisation). His last (and recent) works were joint studies of domain decomposition methods and applications to CFD.

Extractions: Their son Pierre-Louis, who was born in 1956, would also be distinguished by mathematical talent. This gift earned him the highest mathematical distinction, the Fields Medal, awarded to him during the 1994 International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich. His parents had the great joy of being present for this unique occasion. At the early age of nineteen, Jacques-Louis Lions passed the entrance exam to the highly coveted Ecole Normale Supérieure de la rue d'Ulm. There he met Bernard Malgrange among others and at the end of their studies, they both decided to opt for a university carrier in mathematics (a rather uncommon choice at a time when most "Normaliens" would rather teach the famed "classes de Mathématiques Spéciales" in the lycées). They were then awarded a grant by CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research) to prepare their doctoral dissertations. And so they both went to Nancy to work under the guidance of a prestigious thesis advisor, Laurent Schwartz, who had just received the Fields Medal for his theory of distributions in 1950.
