Extractions: WILLIAM G. HORNER is descended from one of the oldest pioneer families of Washington county, Penn., his grandfather, William Horner, having come hither from Adams county, Penn., in 1800, and passed the remainder of his life in agricultural pursuits. He died about the year 1860. Joseph Horner (son of William) was born in 1806, and grew to manhood on the home farm. He married Catherine Mitchell, who was also a native of Washington county, born August 25, 1817, and the young people settled on the home farm. The following children were born to their union: William G., Elizabeth B. (Mrs. Samuel Mitchell, of Piatt county, Ill.), Nancy C. (wife of David Templeton, of North Strabane township), Mary (Mrs. Abner Myers, of Somerset county, Penn.), Louisa (living at home), and Martha J., Sarah E. and Margaret (all three deceased). Mr. and Mrs. Horner were members of the Presbyterian Church. The father of this family died May 29, 1874, and the mother passed away April 30, 1887. William G. Horner was born September 16, 1834, on the home farm in North Strabane township. He was educated in the usual log-cabin country school of the vicinity, but has broadened his educational knowledge by observation and experience. He has always followed agricultural pursuits, and is the owner of a well-cultivated and productive farm, which is furnished with fine stock. He is an active politician, and has ever been a leader in all progressive movements of the community which tend to improve the general welfare. Mr. Horner has never married, but his maiden sister, who is living with him, assists in providing the comforts and luxuries of a pleasant home.

Extractions: Reprinted in 1974 CAPTAIN JOHN BOWNE, patentee, was the son of William Bowne (q.v.) and his wife Ann. The writer believes that he was born in 1626, but can give no record to verify this, the impression probably being gained from some youthful conversation with his grandmother, who had much to say about her early Bowne ancestors. He died on Jan. 3, 1684. With his father, William, he came from Salem to Gravesend, where, Sept. 20, 1647, he was alloted a plantation. He was the unquestioned leader in the settlement of Monmouth, and, at one time, or another, held all the importnat offices within the gift of the people or the appointment of the Crown. At the time of his death he was Major of the Monmouth Militia, the ranking military officer of the county. No adequate account of his activities can be undertaken here. He married Lydia, daughter of the Reverend Obadiah Homes, who long survived him. Their children were: Captain John (2nd), 1664-1716, who married Frances Bowman, and died s.p.; Captain Obadian, 1666-1726, who married, first, his own cousin, Elizabeth, daughter of Governor Andrew Bowne, and, secondly, Elizabeth, daughter of Captain Cornelius Longfield, who was the son of the Dutch Admiral Van Langveldt; Deborah, who married Richard Stillwell; Sarah, who married Richard Salter; and, Catherine, who married William Hartshorne. The name has almost died out, but through female lines - Hartshorne, Longstreet, Hornor, Crawford, and many others - his blood is yet largely with us.

Extractions: John Meirs Horner Autobiography During the previous three or four years, I had been wrought up over the subject of religion. The Methodists were the most persistent in my neighborhood, and my preference was for them. In these days came ministers of a new sect, calling themselves Latter-day Saints, with a new revelation, preaching the gospel of the New Testament, with its gifts and blessings. It attracted much attention; people listened and some obeyed, thereby enjoying the promised blessings. Members of the Methodist, Baptist, and Presbyterian faith, as well as non-professors began to join them. Among the latter class were my father, mother and sisters. I was the first of the family to obey, being baptized by Erastus Snow, in the Layawa Creek, on the second day of August, 1840. In the spring of 1843, I went up to Nauvoo. Here I was introduced to and shook hands with the Prophet Joseph Smith. I stopped in Nauvoo during the summer and was one of the four men who laid the brick in David Yearsley's three story house, and in the Masonic brick lodge, under the guidance of Brother George Woodward, who was one of the four. Mixing mortar, handling the trowel, the square, the saw, the plane, etc., was new work for me, but, as in the case of using farm tools, I found it a great help in after years. Finally the word came that the Saints were going to leave Nauvoo for California, then a province of Mexico, and counsel was given for the eastern Saints to charter a ship and go around the Horn to California. Extractions: Map of Route 3000 The Prince William Parkway runs between Route 234 Dumfries Road in Manassas to York and Summerland Drives in Woodbridge. The Parkway is a 4 to 6 lane divided major arterial highway which links Manassas and the Potomac Mills-Dale City-Woodbridge areas of Prince William County. These are the two most populous areas of the county. Upon completion of the Route 234 Bypass in Manassas, the Prince William Parkway will provide part of a continuous 4 to 6 lane arterial route from I-66 to I-95 in Prince William County (via Route 234 and the Parkway itself). Currently, the eastern end of the Prince William Parkway is at York and Summerland Drives. The Prince William County Comprehensive Plan shows an extension of the Parkway that would end at US 1 in the area of Marumsco Plaza. Fairfax County Parkway in that it is a wide, well-built almost freeway type road. The other sections of the Prince William Parkway are more like arterial roads in that they have limited intersections and driveway cuts, but have many businesses lining each side of the road. This is especially true in the Potomac Mills area. In the Summer of 2000, the Liberia Avenue extension opened from the intersection of the the Prince William Parkway and Richmond Avenue to VA 234 Dumfries Road in Manassas. The planning maps that I have seen call this new stretch of road Liberia Avenue. However, it is signed as the Prince William Parkway. I am unsure as to the route number of this new section of the Parkway as VDOT has not installed any route number signs. The new road is built much like the original section of the Prince William Parkway west of Davis Ford Road and Hoadly Road. This section of the Parkway will tie into VA 234 where the VA 234 Bypass rejoins the original section of VA 234. There is also construction west of VA 234 that will realign Brentsville Road to a 4-way intersection (future interchange) with the Prince William Parkway.
