Elliptic functions. Entire and meromorphic functions. Normal families. Conformal mappings. The theory of analytic functions plays a very important role in functional analysis, in the theory of ordinary and partial differential equations and in theoretical physics. Therefore, it is necessary that the basic preparation of any student of pure or applied mathematics should include a study of some basic ideas of the theory of functions of one complex variable, among which analytic continuation, the algebraic functions and their integrals, and conformal mappings are the most important. These topics are also necessary for the general background of preparation of any person aiming at a master degree in pure mathematics. The aim of the second part of the course in complex analysis is to give the student a broader understanding of the specific nature of the analytic functions, going beyond the mere computational part of the theory which is presented in the first part of the course.     Extractions: Do you know this number? They say that mathematics is not really about numbers, and they're right. But sometimes it's fun to play around with the darn things! Given any positive number you can work out its continued fraction expansion, like this: sqrt(2) = 1 + 1 - 2 + 1 2 + 1 - 2 + 1 2 + 1 2 + 1 . . . But normally it won't look so pretty! A number is rational if and only if the continued fraction stops after finitely many steps. If its continued fraction expansion eventually repeats, like this: sqrt(3) = 1 + 1 - 1 + 1 2 + 1 - 1 + 1 2 + 1 1 + 1 . . . then it satisfies a quadratic equation with integer coefficients. So the continued fraction expansion of e can't ever repeat... but it's cute nonetheless:

    Extractions: Norrlandsresan med Åreskutan 1934 Efter att ha skrivit våra namn i boken såg vi oss omkring där uppe, massor av stenrösen hade rests upp av besökare. Därtill gjorde vi oss ej tid. Efter en titt i kaféet samt sedan vi beundrat den oerhörda utsikten, vädret var dock något disigt, började vi nedstigningen. Denna gick betydligt fortare men i benen kändes det dock på grund av att man fick hålla in i backarna. Efter en styv timmes marsch fingo vi syn på hummeln där mamma gick och väntade, vi kände genast igen hennes vita hatt och svarta kappa. Från hummeln begåvo vi oss omedelbart för klockan hade blivit sex på eftermiddagen. Vid sjutiden voro vi åter i Åre där det smakade bra med kaffe och dopp efter sex timmars travande på skutan. Efter en välbehövlig vila voro vi åter körklara för att ta en titt på Tännforsen som ligger ett par mil från Åre. Detta fall var det vackraste man sett i den vägen och man kände genast igen det genom otaliga fotografier som man sett. Klockan hade nu blivit 10 på kvällen och man började bli trött, vi åkte vägen uppåt Norge ytterligare någon mil och letade efter lämplig tältplats. Vi hade nästan uppgett hoppet att finna någon då vi passerade ett vandrarhem. Vi togo in på detta vilket endast kostade 50 öre person och natt och fingo vila ut ordentligt efter en arbetsam men intressant dag. Måndagsmorgonen ingick och efter sedvanlig kaffedrickning med dopp av winerbröd inköpta i Östersund startade vi vår längsta dagskörning vid åttatiden på morgonen. Förbi Ånge gick färden vidare genom skogsmarker och på goda vägar. Vid en liten sjö stannade vi och gjorde vår morgontoalett som vi på grund av vattenbrist måste uppskjuta vid starten på morgonen. Vi foro genom Alby bruk känt för sin karbidtillverkning. Vidare passerades stationssamhället Östavall där förr varit både sågverk och annan industri men nu blivit nedlagt. Så småningom kommo vi till Ljusdals köping vid Ljusnan. Efter en titt på samhället foro vi över bron och funno en liten sjö där vi kunde bada och få litet till livs. Vädret var också det bästa tänkbara, varför vi njöto i fulla drag.
