Glenn and six other men were chosen for the Mercury program 20 February 1962 Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth. He circled the earth three times in less than five hours.

He received an excellent education, and while studying for his undergraduate degree in mathematics, instituted the Analytical Society of Cambridge in conjunction with George Peacock and Charles Babbage. The group introduced Leibniz notation into English mathematics to supplant the unwieldy Newtonian symbols. When Herschel graduated from Cambridge in 1813, he was at the top of his class. Herschel began to study in London for a career in law in 1814, but changed his mind within a year. He then returned to Cambridge for a brief stint as a teacher of mathematics, but left in 1816 to assist in the astronomical research of his aging father. The years they spent working together served as the groundwork from which the younger Herschel would build the rest of his career. In 1820, Herschel was one of the founding members of the Royal Astronomical Society and when his father died in 1822 he carried on his work, making a detailed study of double stars. In collaboration with James South he compiled a catalog of observations that was published in 1824. The work garnered the pair the Gold Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society and the Lalande Prize from the Paris Academy of Sciences. Herschel was also knighted 1831. In 1833, Herschel decided to temporarily relocate with his family to Cape Colony, South Africa in order to observe the skies not visible in England. Herschel's research was carried out at a brisk rate, and by the time they ventured home four years later, he had amassed an amazing amount of data. He had made catalogs of nebulae and double stars, had described the Magellanic clouds, which are only visible in the southern hemisphere, and had made a study of the intensity of solar radiation using an actinometer, a device he invented in 1825.

The profound impact this encounter had on both John and his wife Margaret resulted in a magnificent portfolio of botanical drawings, outlined by John using a camera lucida for scientific accuracy, and painted I watercolours by Margaret. Herschel's restless, analytical mind also led him to consider deeper issues, among them the morphology of bulbs, the diversity of species, and botanical scents and perfumes. The Brenthurst Press has once again drawn on the resources of the Brenthurst Library, the private Africana collection of Mr. H.F. Oppenheimer, and other relevant material (much of it unpublished and in private collections) to produce Flora Herscheliana: Sir John and Lady Herschel at the Cape 1834 to 1838, by Brian Warner and John Rourke. The book includes unpublished works by other artists such as Charles Davidson Bell and Thomas Bowler, and is a celebration of the Herschels' fascination with the abundant beauty they discovered on the doorstep of Feldhausen, their home at the Cape.

Born into a family of astronomers - his father was Friedrich Wilhelm (William) Herschel ( , who discovered Uranus, Herschel was educated in a number of public schools, at home by a Scottish mathematician and subsequently at St John's College, Cambridge, which he graduated from with a BA in . He was a founder member of the Astronomical Society (later the Royal Astronomical Society). At university, Herschel was close friends with Charles Babbage ( ) and George Peacock ( Herschel was a methodical recorder of information. He created detailed records of the skies he studied and made objective comparisons of the brightness of stars. An example of this was the nova of the star Eta Carinae that he observed while in South Africa, his home for nearly five years. In his time at Cape Town, he made a large catalogue of the objects he observed, many of which he was the first to identify, thanks to his powerful telescope. On his return to England, he was awarded a Baronetcy. After this period in Africa, he continued his work in astronomy and experimented with optics (his father had been a manufacturer of telescopes) and photography. His work in optics produced a detailed paper on the theory of spherical aberration in lenses, a subject he, as an astronomer, must have had extensive experience of. In the realm of photography, Herschel experimented (with only limited success) with colour reproduction. He was the first to produce a photograph on a glass plate, and coined the terms "positive" and "negative".

He flew missions during World War II in the Pacific around 1944 and over Korea in the Korean War in 1953. Dominating the article is a discussion of the spatial implications of Rosse's discoveries, and dominating that discussion is De Quincey's reaction to an engraving of the Great Nebula in Orion found in Nichol's book. De Quincey sees in the form of the nebula a hideous and malignant face that he compares both to an Assyrian sultan's and to those of Satan and Death in Paradise Lost . In this "phantom in Orion" De Quincey sees "a head thrown back, and raising its face . . . in the very anguish of hatred to some unknown heavens." "Brutalities unspeakable sit upon the upper lip"; "cruelty and revenge" on the lower. The head is broken by "a horrid chasm, a ravine, a shaft, that many centuries would not traverse." It is a vision "ready for the worship of those that are tormented in sleep."
