John Herschel studied mathematics and astronomy, made an expedition to the Cape of Good Hope in order to supplement his father's astronomical work made in the northern hemisphere. As a philosopher of sciece, his book A Preliminary Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy (1830) was influencial in illustrating rules of induction and hypothetico-deductive method with concrete examples from physics and related fields; for instance, young Darwin eagerly read it, and Mill's famous "Canons of Induction" are nothing but reformulations of some of Herschel's views. Further, as some historians (C. C. Gillispie in particular) have pointed out, his long review of Quetelet raised interests in probability theory among British scholars; young Maxwell presumably got inspiration from this review, as one can infer from Maxwell's famous 1860 paper on the kinetic theoy of gases as well as from Maxwell's letter (1850) to Campbell. It may be noted that Herschel suggested the frequency interpetation of probability against the Laplacian "classical" (but ambivalent) view. He explored the southern sky with the 18-inch telescope of his fater between 1825 and 1838 ("Results of Astronomical Observations made during the Years 1834,5,6,7,8 at the Cape of Godd Hope beeing a Completion of a Telescopic Survey of the Whole Surface of the Visible Heavens commenced in 1825", Smith Elder & Co, 1825) and established the first large general catalogue of nebulous objects: the "General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars" (PTRAS, 1864) containing 5079 objects (compiling his father's discoveries along with his own).

First edition. «With this monumental survey of the stars of the southern hemisphere, Herschel (1792-1871) completed the task begun by his father William, who fifty years earlier had catalogued the northern celestial hemisphere. Using a twenty-foot reflecting telescope, which he erected just south of Cape Town, Herschel swept the whole of the southern sky (1834-38), cataloguing nebulae, clusters and binary stars, carrying out star counts of over 68,000 stars, and making micrometer measures for separation and position angle of many star pairs. He also introduced numerical measurements into stellar photometry by means of the astronomer, a device of his own invention which allowed him to compare the brightness of stars with an image of the full moon. He made detailed drawings and maps of several objects, including the Orion region, the Eta Cariane nebula, the Magellanic Clouds and many extra-galatic and planetary nebulae» (Norman 1056). Herschel's monumental survey of the stars of the Southern Hemisphere, a complement to his father's survey of the northern celestial hemisphere. Herschel devoted five years to the project, which he had chosen to carry out at the Cape of Good Hope. In a suburb south of Cape Town he constructed a 20-foot reflecting telescope, with which he methodically explored the night skies. 'By 1838 he had swept the whole of the southern sky, catalogued 1,707 nebulae and clusters, and listed 2,102 pairs of binary stars. He carried out star counts, on William Herschel's plan, of 68,948 stars in 3,000 sky areas... He produced detailed sketches and maps of several objects, including the Orion region, the Eta Carinae nebula, and the Magellanic Clouds, and extremely accurate drawings of many extragalactic and planetary nebulae... Herschel invented a device called an astrometer, which enabled him to compare the brightness of stars with an image of the full moon of which he could control the apparent brightness, and thus introduced numerical measurements into stellar photometry' (DSB). He dedicated the work to the memory of Hugh Percy, third Duke of Northumberland (1785-1847), chancellor of Cambridge University and a patron of science, who had died shortly before the book's publication.

He coined the terms photography, negative, and positive, discovered sodium thiosulphite as a fixer of silver halides, and invented the cyanotype process his inventions also include astronomical instruments. From 1821 to 1823, with James South, he systematically remeasured the double stars discovered by his father William Herschel. He went on to revise his father's survey of the northern heavens and from 1834 to 1838 mapped the southern skies from the Cape of Good Hope Observatory in South Africa. His General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters , in which he coordinated into one catalogue the results of his father's, his own, and other astronomers' surveys, is still the standard reference catalogue he had personally discovered 525 nebulae and clusters.

Extractions: HERSCHEL, Sir John Frederick William b. 7 March 1792; d. 11 May 1871 The only son of the distinguished British astronomer William Herschel, Sir John himself also became a well-known astronomer, and published an influential book on the subject. He became interested in capturing and retaining images, and in 1839 had managed to fix pictures using hyposulphite of soda. In fact it was he who had discovered twenty years previously that hypo could dissolve silver salts. Herschel, of course, had the fortune to be around just at the time both Daguerre and Fox Talbot were announcing their discoveries. He was evidently very smitten by the Daguerreotype , and conveyed the following news to Fox Talbot: "It is hardly too much to call them miraculous. Certainly they surpass anything I could have conceived as within the bounds of reasonable expectation.... Every gradation of light and shade is given with a softness and fidelity which sets all painting at an immeasurable distance.... If you have a few days at your disposition....come and see!" Fox Talbot, for his part, would not have been very happy about this news, as he was already upset that Daguerre had pipped him to the post in announcing his discovery!

Extractions: GOODWIN, Hannibal b. 21 April 1822; d. 31 Dec 1900 Hannibal Goodwin was a clergyman working at a church in Newark, New Jersey. His primary interest in his experiments was in spreading the gospel to children in his Sunday school, but he was also a keen amateur photographer, and also patented a number of inventions. The significant one was his application for a patent for roll film using light-sensitive celluloid strips, on 2nd May 1887. However, this application came up against some underhand interference by Eastman Kodak . One writer stated that "for more than eleven years the patent suit remained undecided.... because the Eastman Kodak Company during this time employed every possible means to prevent the granting of the patent to Goodwin. In the meantime Eastman Kodak had also applied for similar patents under the name of an H. M. Reighenbach. Eventually, in 1989, Goodwin was awarded the rights. Just as Goodwin was about to go into production, he died in a street accident. The Ansco company took over the process, and also acted at plaintiff in the case against Eastman Kodak, eventually securing millions os dollars in damages.
