Isaac Herschel encouraged all six of his children to train in mathematics, French and music. Caroline's mother did not see the need for a girl to become educated and preferred to make Caroline a house servant to the rest of the family. At the age of ten Caroline was stricken with typhus. The disease permanently stunted her growth. Her parents concluded that she would never marry but would live her life as an old maid. Caroline remained in her parents' home until, at the age of twenty-two, her brother, William took her to live with him in Bath, England. Caroline became her brother's housekeeper. William was an accomplished musician and a conductor. He gave Caroline voice lessons and trained her in mathematics as well. Caroline became a well known soprano and began to sing professionally. William's hobby was astronomy and he devoted most of his free time to making more and more powerful telescopes with which to look deeper into space.

En 1767, lorsque son père meurt, elle est obligée de tenir maison; elle travaille littéralement comme une esclave. En 1772, William, émigré en Angleterre depuis quelques années, l'invite à venir le rejoindre à Bath. Elle accepte immédiatement et, une fois installée là-bas, elle entreprend une carrière de chanteuse. Cependant, son frère devenu obsédé par l'astronomie réclame constamment son assistance, oubliant les torts qu'il cause à sa carrière. En 1782, William se consacre désormais uniquement à l'astronomie. Il déménage au voisinage de Windsor Castle, où Caroline l'accompagne, mettant ainsi fin à sa carrière musicale. En 1788, William se marie et Caroline est obligée d'aller habiter ailleurs. Cette épreuve est dure à accepter, mais elle n'en continue pas moins sa collaboration au travail astronomique de son frère. Lorsque celui-ci meurt en 1822, elle retourne à Hanovre, où elle habite jusqu'à sa mort. Jusqu'à la fin de ses jours, elle est alerte et bien portante. En 1828, la Royal Society lui décerne sa médaille d'or.

    Extractions: The Herschel family is well known in the history of astronomy. Their observations around the turn of the 19th century resulted in the cataloging of thousands of deep sky objects, as well as the discovery of Saturn's moon Enceladus. Caroline Herschel, who assisted her brother William in many of his observations, was quite an achiever in her own right, making the original discoveries of many of the clusters and nebulae in the Herschel catalog. Many deep sky observers may not realise, however, that Caroline also discovered eight comets, six of which bear her name. Comet C/1786 P1 (Herschel) Herschel's first comet discovery came on the night of 1st August, 1786. She found the comet at a magnitude of about 7.5, though poor sky conditions meant that confirmation of the cometary nature of the suspected intruder had to wait until the following night. The first reported naked-eye sighting of Comet Herschel occurred on 17th August, and Charles Messier observed a tail 1.5 degrees long through his telescope the following night. On the next night, 19th August, Caroline's brother, William Herschel, described the comet as being "considerably brighter" than the globular cluster M3, indicating a brightness of between 5th and 6th magnitude. Observations continued through to 26th October. Calculations show that the comet had earlier reached perihelion on 8th July at a distance of only 0.41 AU.

Für über 50 Jahre soll das Riesengerüst vor dem Haus der Herschels in Slough das Landschaftsbild bestimmen und unzählige Touristen anlocken (das Teleskop wird mit dem Koloß von Rhodos verglichen), tatsächlich ist seine Bedeutung für die praktische astronomische Arbeit Herschels gering, da es Temperaturschwankungen gegenüber empfindlich ist, mindestens drei Personen für seinen Betrieb nötig sind und der Spiegel schnell beschlägt und ständig poliert werden muß. 1815 findet die letzte Beobachtung mit dem 40-Füßer statt, und 1839 wird es von John Herschel mit einer kleinen Zeremonie abgebaut. Seit dem Umzug der Herschels nach Datchet bei Windsor im Jahre 1782 steht Caroline ein eigener Refraktor zur Verfügung, der sie ermutigen soll, auf eigene Faust nach Kometen zu suchen, aber zunächst macht sie sich nur halbherzig an ihre "sweeps"

Moritzen, zur Welt. Isaak Herschel hatte ursprünglich Gärtner werden sollen, schaffte es aber, sich mit großer Energie und Beharrlichkeit seinen Traum vom Leben als Berufsmusiker zu erfüllen. Nach Zwischenstationen in Berlin und Braunschweig, wo ihm offenbar übermäßiger militärischer Drill das Leben schwer machte, ließ er sich 1731 als Angehöriger des Musikkorps des Königlichen Garderegiments in Hannover nieder. Während die Persönlichkeit der Mutter in den Schilderungen Carolines blaß bleibt oder sogar einen eher negativen Anstrich bekommt , wird der Vater recht liebevoll als ausgeglichener und sympathischer Mann beschrieben, der nicht nur die musikalische Begabung seiner Kinder nach Möglichkeiten fördert, sondern auch deren naturwissenschaftliches Interesse. Diskussionen über Musiktheorie, Mathematik und Philosophie sind im Hause Herschel an der Tagesordnung. Caroline ist die Zweitjüngste der sechs (von ursprünglich zehn) überlebenden Geschwister und entwickelt eine besonders herzliche Beziehung zu ihrem fünf Jahre jüngeren Bruder Johann Dietrich (13.9.1755) und zu dem zwölf Jahre älteren Friedrich Wilhelm (15.11.1738). Ihre Kindheit wird durch den Siebenjährigen Krieg (1756 - 1763) überschattet, der zunächst einmal die Trennung vom Vater und ihrem Lieblingsbruder Wilhelm mit sich bringt und in dessen weiterem Verlauf es 1757 zur Besetzung Hannovers durch die Franzosen kommt, die zwei Jahre andauern soll. Mit Unterstützung seines Vaters setzt sich Wilhelm Herschel, seit 1753 Oboist bei der Hannoverschen Garde, im Herbst 1757 in Begleitung seines älteren Bruders Heinrich Anton Jakob (20.11.1734) nach England ab.

She learned English, more music, mathematics and accounting, and together they studied astronomy. William also forced her to learn the artifices of English society. It was the glass of telescopes and a prince of a brother that saved her from a cindery existence. Caroline, nicknamed Lina, was born in Hanover, Germany on March 16, 1750, the fifth of six children of Isaac Herschel and Anna Ilse Moritzen. Isaac, an oboist and gardener, gave his daughter a rudimentary education, despite his wife's disapproval. Caroline suffered childhood diseases which scarred her for life. At age three, her cheeks were scar-pocked and her left eye was slightly disfigured by Smallpox. Her diminutive height of 4'3" was caused by Typhus at the age of 10. Her father told her she would never marry and her mother's plans for her were that of maid. When Caroline was 22, it was her favorite brother, Freidrich Wilhelm (nicknamed Fritz and later known as William), who rescued her from a dreary existence as their mother's scullery maid. He had moved to England seven years earlier where he had made a life for himself as a musician. On a visit to Hanover, he vowed to save his dear "Lina" and brought her with him upon his return to Bath, England.

En 1772 Caroline se unió a su hermano William en Bath, allí él tenía la música como profesión y siempre muy cercano a su hermana le enseñó canto. En la medida en que William en sus tiempos libres se involucraba mas y mas en la astronomía le enseño a Caroline lecciones de matemáticas e inglés. Además de cantante, Caroline ayudaba a su hermano en actividades musicales y disfrutaban el tiempo libre con la construcción de telescopios. En la medida que pasaba el tiempo ella iba ahondando sus estudios de matemáticas, álgebra, trigonometría y astronomía. La astronomía paso de ser una entretención para William una vez que descubrió Urano y comenzó a recibir pagos de la corona por su trabajo por el año de 1785, Caroline a su vez también abandonó sus múltiples actividades para dedicarse de lleno a la astronomía, se encargó con un pequeño telescopio de la búsqueda de cometas.

Suo padre Isaac era un musicista di talento. Isaac Herschel incoraggiò tutti i suoi sei figli a studiare matematica, francese e musica, ma la madre di Caroline non credeva che una ragazza dovesse essere istruita, e preferiva che la figlia diventasse una donna di casa, perché servisse il resto della famiglia. All'età di dieci anni Caroline fu colpita dal tifo. La malattia bloccò per sempre la sua crescita. I suoi genitori conclusero che non si sarebbe mai sposata, ma avrebbe trascorso la sua vita da zitella. Caroline rimase in casa con i genitori fino all'età di ventun'anni, quando che suo fratello William la prese con sé e andò a vivere a Bath, in Inghilterra. Caroline divenne la governante di suo fratello. William era un bravo musicista. Diede a Caroline lezioni di canto e di matematica. Caroline divenne un soprano famoso e cominciò a cantare come professionista. L'hobby di William era l'astronomia; egli dedicava molto del suo tempo libero a costruire telescopi sempre più potenti per vedere sempre più lontano nello spazio.
