Extractions: Better known as the second Englishman to lead an expedition around the world, Thomas Cavendish also played an important role in the expeditions know as the Roanoke Voyages. In 1585 he participated with Sir Richard Grenville in planting the Ralph Lane colony by bringing his ship Elizabeth to the area now known as North Carolina. Born at Grimston Hall near the port of Harwich in Suffolk, England, circa 1555, Cavendish, like many others of his generation and class, turned to piracy in order to make his fortune. His first recorded adventure was the 1585 voyage to Roanoke Island. In addition to Cavendish's Elizabeth (50 tuns), Grenville and Lane sailed with Tyger (160 tuns), Roebuck (140 tuns), Lyon (100 tuns) and two smaller pinnaces. They departed from Plymouth on 9 April 1585 and planned for the fleet to sail together to the West Indies via the Canary Islands; however, in bad weather off the coast of Portugal, one of the pinnaces sank and the other ships separated. In his ship Tyger , Grenville sailed on alone to the rendezvous point off Puerto Rico where he constructed a fortification and built a new pinnace.

The focus of this group is Thomas Harriot, a Renaissance scholar whose scientific and mathematical contributions laid the foundation for future discoveries and are still relevant today. Among the Harrioteers is Ralph Staiger, who recently wrote a book for young people (although adults would enjoy it as well), entitled Thomas Harriot: Science Pioneer. Staiger, executive director emeritus of the International Reading Association, taught at the University and currently heads the University of Delaware Association of Retired Faculty. Although an expert on children and reading, this is first venture into writing a children's book. Staiger said he became interested in Harriot through the late John Shirley, former UD provost. Shirley encouraged Staiger to write the book, and Staiger has dedicated Thomas Harriot to Shirley, calling him an "extraordinary Harrioteer who spent his scholarly career unveiling clues to the life and scientific contributions of Thomas Harriot." Extractions: The Soft Logic of Thomas Harriot H. T. Goranson, Sirius-Beta tedg@infi.net Abstract Until recently, First Order Logic has suffered from an inadequate representation of the situation. This has imposed significant limitations in real-world modeling. We see that an early innovator in logic had this concept but it was dropped by successors because of notational complexity. We present a likely introspective notation of the early scholar, Harriot; we outline the Hermetic influence on this idea (of introspection); and provide a newly discovered interesting influence from the New World. Introduction The historical sequence of how mathematical ideas unfolded is almost never the best logical development for my own understanding. But sometimes the historic evolution itself provides significant insight into ideas. And sometimes parts of ideas are lost as they pass from one thinker to another. The Problem My own work is in logic-based modeling of collaborative enterprises . There is a long tradition of such representations in the industrial engineering community; in the past decade, such representations have been extended to all elements of the business enterprise for all sorts of valuable tasks. Enterprise integration, business process re-engineering and simulation are among the most common. The economic benefits of this application of logic are very strong, and the area is booming. Unfortunately, there are problems. . So already, it is possible to have a mathematically rigorous representation of a small domain in a complex enterprise.

Extractions: Little is known of Thomas Harriot in his early years, except that his father was a commoner in the county of Oxford. He entered the University of Oxford when he was 17 years old. He completed his degree at St. Mary's Hall in 1580, then moved to London, where he was employed by Sir Walter Raleigh. In 1585, he joined Raleigh on an expedition to Virginia, in a position of staff scientist. Harriot was well-versed in navigational theories and worked as a cartographer. In 1586, he returned to England and wrote what would be his only published work, entitled "A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia." Harriot lived in Ireland for a few years, in a former abbey granted by Raleigh, before returned to London. In 1598, he joined the service of the ninth Earl of Northumberland, William Percy, who gave him living quarters west of London, in Syon House, and a pension. In 1605, he was arrested along with Northumberland, due to the Gunpowder Plot. Although Northumberland stayed in the Tower of London until 1622, Harriot was quickly released and returned to Syon House. There, he studied optics, discovered Snell's law of refraction (before Snell) and corresponded with Johannes Kepler. Harriot's broad range of study included significant contributions to algebra and astronomy. Between 1609 and 1613, he observed the heavens through telescopes, regarding what he saw. This included the first recorded telescopic drawing of the moon in early August 1609, several months before Galileo's moon studies. Harriot also made the first recorded observation of sunspots in December of 1610. Although he did not publish his findings, he shared them with correspondents. After his death of cancer in 1613, Harriot left several scientific manuscripts, which have slowly percolated into the mainstream of historical research over the past three centuries.

His only published work was A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia , based on his experiences with the 1585-86 expedition to Roanoke Island. However, his influence in various fields, was greater than we might expect, most likely through the distribution of manuscripts concerning his mathematical innovations (especially in algebraic notation), astronomical observations of the sun and moon, and several other subjects. In many ways, Hariot's presence on the Internet parallels his career in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The broad accessibility and, yet, seemingly fleeting nature of availability of Internet resources is not unlike the image we have of Renaissance manuscript culture. As in the Europe of his time, Hariot is not alone in the quiet pervasiveness of his influence. Other Roanoke-related writers and artists-such as Sir Walter Raleigh, Richard Hakluyt, John White, and Theodore De Bry-lurk on the World Wide Web, where their presence is felt without being obvious. First published in 1588, A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia, was based on Harriots voyage to the New World in 1585 on the second Roanoke expedition led by Sir Richard Grenville, Sir Walter Raleighs brother-in-law. Two years later, Theodor DeBry published Harriots A Briefe and True Report again, this time with copperplate engravings based on the watercolor drawings of John White, who had accompanied Harriot on the 1585 expedition. Not only did A Briefe and True Report offer readers a wealth of information on the flora and fauna of Virginia, it is widely recognized as one of the most detailed early English ethnographies of the native populations of North America. Indeed, its stature as an ethnography would not be surpassed until well into the seventeenth century with the writings of John Smith, William Wood, Roger Williams, and others.
