Arthur is an internationally renowned mathematician whose work in automorphic forms and representation theoryparticularly innovative trace formulahas significantly advanced the quest for a grand unified mathematical theory. A native of Canada, he earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Toronto before coming to Yale for his Ph.D. He was named a Toronto "University Professor," a title of distinction awarded to very few. His teaching has inspired generations of students. Arthur is considered one of the outstanding living mathematicians in the world. In recognition of that, he was elected a Fellow in the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Society of London and was honored with the 1999 Canadian Gold Medal for Science and Engineering, the 1997 CRM-Fields Institute Prize, the 1999 Faculty Award of Excellence and the Henry Marshall Tory Gold Medal of the Royal Society of Canada. Denison/Welsh Hills School Students Build Solar Greenhouse at the Welsh Hills School, 2610 Newarkgranville Road in granville, Ohio. and directorof environmental studies at Denison University, and evelyn Hoyt Frolking http://www.denison.edu/publicaffairs/pressreleases/whsgreenhouse.shtml
Extractions: Set For Friday At Welsh Hills School, Granville A collaborative project between Denison University and The Welsh Hills School comes to fruition at 3 p.m. on Friday (May 3) the grand opening of a solar greenhouse and solar electric demonstration system being constructed by students from both schools. The event will be held at the Welsh Hills School, 2610 Newark-Granville Road in Granville, Ohio. DU student Amanda Sage '02 drills while Jen Firth '02 holds one of the posts for the new solar greenhouse. The project was initially established jointly by Abram W. Kaplan, associate professor and director of environmental studies at Denison University, and Evelyn Hoyt Frolking, head of Welsh Hills School. Each spring, the graduating senior environmental studies majors at Denison gather for a last class together, a community-based, hands-on seminar focused on a single real-world project. Each year the class takes on a different "client," and engages in a project that hopes to make a difference and integrate the education the students have obtained during their Denison career. This term, Kaplan's class has been working with the Welsh Hills School, a small independent school in Granville, to raise energy awareness and create two tangible elements that will help to foster school activities and teaching in the years to come. These elements are a solar electric demonstration system (part of the national "Solar Schools" program) and a greenhouse to support on-going gardening efforts at the school. The Denison students have been teaching the WHS students on a regular basis (a few hours per week) and have developed curricula, specified the greenhouse design, obtained a contractor/educational-consultant, and prepared the WHS children for the construction process. For the last two weeks, the two groups have worked side by side, digging trenches, drilling holes, shoveling gravel, and now actually constructing the greenhouse itself. Extractions: Sydney Granville's 1926 Australasian Tour Reported by Robert Morrison Sydney Granville was born in Bolton, Lancashire (now Greater Manchester), in 1880 and started his singing career in grand opera with the Moody-Manners Opera Company. He first appeared with the D'Oyly Carte in 1907 and played Bill Bobstay in HMS Pinafore at the Savoy in 1908. Granville's early years with the company were spent playing juvenile baritone roles in the operas including Cox, Samuel, Grosvenor, Strephon, Florian, Pish-Tush, Sir Richard Cholmondeley, Luiz and Giuseppe. In July of 1925 Granville went on tour with the D'Oyly Carte "New" Opera Company (the smaller provincial touring company), with which he appeared as the Colonel Calverley, Lord Mountararat, the Mikado and Sir Roderic Murgatroyd. Mid-way through the season, Granville left the company with a number of other principals and sailed to Australia to join the J. C. June 27 Hycroft Wellness Centre ENFANT TERRIBLE OF CANADIAN POETRY SENDS A MIXED MESSAGE by Roxanne Davies Although I had read about Evelyn Lau, author, poet and fiction writer, read her poetry, viewed the CBC docudrama entitled Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid , a chronicle of her life of drugs and prostitution and her development into a published writer, I had never seen her in person. When the invitation to attend a fundraiser for one-year old Persimmons Theatre came along, I jumped at the chance. With a sense of voyeuristic anticipation, I headed over to Granville and 16th to take part in the literary evening. What was I expecting? I wondered. I didn't count many prostitutes (former or otherwise) as my friends, although I did know of some middle class wives who may perhaps fall in that category. Sad and unfulfilled, bought and paid for. But if I was expecting a young and wanton female with the imprints of men's hands still impressed on her still young body, what I saw was a slightly chubby, pretty 20 -something, dressed in a modest black checkered Bermuda shorts, black sweater, and sensible shoes. Flawless skin, pouty lips, thick hair. Rather a prim and proper garb for a woman whose claim to fame (besides her often sparkling poetry/ prose and being the youngest poet to ever be nominated for the Governors General 's Award) is that she was a child prostitute.

He began his school work in Wilmington in 1911, and while in the Senior Class at the High School he was recommended to the University of Maryland, where he began the study of Dentistry in 1917. When the World War came on, he was drafted, but he was permitted to continue his studies at the University, and received his instructions at a training camp near Baltimore. When the war closed he received an honorable discharge, but a few weeks later he was stricken with influenza while rooming at the Y.M.C.A. in Baltimore. He was examined by a specialist and it was found that he was suffering with Tuberculosis. As soon as he was able to be moved he was taken to his home on Deals Island, Maryland. Then after he recovered from his attack of influenza, he taught school at Vaughn School House, near Laurel, until he was appointed a mail carrier in Laurel, and he continued on that job as long as he was able to work. He was married to Orpah Tankersley of Deals Island, Maryland, November 28, 1919, and they were the parents of three children. Their eldest child was Granville Wiley Jr. He was born December 23, 1929, and was less than four years old when his father died. Meeting with little success he left South Africa and journeyed north to the Gwanda/Bulawayo region of Southern Rhodesia. Here he undertook a number of engineering works for Sir George Pauling, developer of the new Rhodesia Railways - being built to cross the recently settled territory. It is unclear when he left the region but sometime prior to WWI it is believed he had been building canals in Holland. RETURN TO index
