Godel proved that any system that employed numbers could have statements expressed in that system that are true but not derivable from the basic axioms of that system. Thus, if the laws of nature are most fundamentally based on mathematics, then there may be things and/or events in the universe which do exist but are not derived from the more basic elements of the universe. It is difficult to adhere to a fully deterministic and logical universe if some things in it cannot be derived from the simpler elements. This would seem to deny cause and effect on which a deterministic point of view depends. However, it should be noted that the operations that govern the relationship between numbers in and of itself has not been reduced to the propositional entities of "True", "False" and "Proof". So it is only inevitable that some things in such a system cannot be "proven". For "proof" is not even incorporated in that system. The number "2" does not prove anything. The operator "+" does not prove anything. And the truth of the fact that "1+1=2" is imposed by the understanding of mathematicians and is not derived by logic alone. The arbitrary nature of the lack of proof that Godel found may have been introduced by the arbitrary nature of numbering things itself. For how the mathematician wishes to collect things for the convenience of his formulae may not reflect the true nature of the whole. For he may arrange his groups differently for different purposes. Also, the General Theory of Relativity suggests that there is no sharp distinction between particles of matter and the space around it. Particles of matter are singularities in the General Theory of Relativity which means that particles are like tiny black holes that curve space and time to an infinitesimal point which occupies no space at all. So if nothing can be distinguished from space and time, then it is arbitrary to group it into individual parts.

I would like to attempt here to describe, in terms of philosophical concepts, the development of foundational research in mathematics since around the turn of the century, and to fit it into a general schema of possible philosophical world-views [ Weltanschauungen ]. For this, it is necessary first of all to become clear about the schema itself. I believe that the most fruitful principle for gaining an overall view of the possible world-views will be to divide them up according to the degree and the manner of their affinity to or, respectively, turning away from metaphysics (or religion). In this way we immediately obtain a division into two groups: scepticism, materialism and positivism stand on one side, spiritualism, idealism and theology on the other. We also at once see degrees of difference in this sequence, in that scepticism stands even farther away from theology than does materialism, while on the other hand idealism, e.g., in its pantheistic form, is a weakened form of theology in the proper sense. Now it is a familiar fact, even a platitude, that the development of philosophy since the Renaissance has by and large gone from right to left - not in a straight line, but with reverses, yet still, on the whole. Particularly in physics, this development has reached a peak in our own time, in that, to a large extent, the possibility of knowledge of the objectivisable states of affairs is denied, and it is asserted that we must be content to predict results of observations. This is really the end of all theoretical science in the usual sense (although this predicting can be completely sufficient for practical purposes such as making television sets or atom bombs).

Extractions: Sixty years later, a transdisciplinary symposium was held to commemorate this event, from May 27-29, 1991 at the Jussieu-St Bernard Campus of Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris. A call for papers was first circulated in June 1990. Twenty contributions were accepted from nine countries. The Committee of the Symposium was presided by Filippo Maria Pandolfi, vice-president of the Commission of European Communities. This symposium was the eighth annual seminar of the working group Synergy and coherence in artificial and natural systems of AFCET (French Society for Information and Systems Sciences). It was held with a grant from the Commission of the European Communities, and support from IBM-Europe. The French Ministry of Research and Technology supports the publication of the proceedings. During the three days of working sessions and lectures, one hundred sets of abstracts and presented papers were ditributed to the audience. The symposium was announced in the Figaro, the major French daily. A full set of audio recording of 22 hours was prepared for the archives of the symposium, and is available to researchers. The symposium was concluded at the top floor of the central tower of the Campus, on May 29 at 17 hours, where the participants were invited to a farewell cocktail by Jean-Claude Legrand, President of P. and M . Curie University, in the presence of Ms. Gendreau-Massalou, Chancelor-Rector of the Academy of Paris, and administrators of the University.
