Extractions: THE COMPARATIVE WORTH OF DIFFERENT RACES I have now completed what I have to say concerning the kinships of individuals, and proceed, in this chapter, to attempt a wider treatment of my subject, through a consideration of nations and races. Under even a very moderate form of material civilization, a vast number of aptitudes acquired through the "survivorship of the fittest" and the unsparing destruction of the unfit, for hundreds of generations, have become as obsolete as the old mail-coach habits and customs, since the establishment of railroads, and there is not the slightest use in attempting to preserve them; they are hindrances, and not gains, to civilization. I shall refer to some of these a little further on, but I will first speak of the qualities needed in civilized society. They are, speaking generally, such as will enable a race to supply a large contingent to the various groups of eminent men, of whom I have treated in my several chapters. Without going so far as to say that this very convenient test is perfectly fair, we are at all events justified in making considerable use of it, as I will do, in the estimates I am about to give. In comparing the worth of different races, I shall make frequent use of the law of deviation from an average, to which I have already been much beholden; and, to save the reader's time and patience, I propose to act upon an assumption that would require a good deal of discussion to limit, and to which the reader may at first demur, but which cannot lead to any error of importance in a rough provisional inquiry. Extractions: Few scientists have made lasting contributions to as many fields as Francis Galton. He was an important African explorer, travel writer, and geographer. He was the meteorologist who discovered the anticyclone, a pioneer in using fingerprints to identify individuals, the inventor of regression and correlation analysis in statistics, and the founder of the eugenics movement. Now, Nicholas Gillham paints an engaging portrait of this Victorian polymath. The book traces Galton's ancestry (he was the grandson of Erasmus Darwin and the cousin of Charles Darwin), upbringing, training as a medical apprentice, and experience as a Cambridge undergraduate. It recounts in colorful detail Galton's adventures as leader of his own expedition in Namibia. Darwin was always a strong influence on his cousin and a turning point in Galton's life was the publication of the Origin of Species . Thereafter, Galton devoted most of his life to human heredity, using then novel methods such as pedigree analysis and twin studies to argue that talent and character were inherited and that humans could be selectively bred to enhance these qualities. To this end, he founded the eugenics movement which rapidly gained momentum early in the last century. After Galton's death, however, eugenics took a more sinister path, as in the United States, where by 1913 sixteen states had involuntary sterilization laws, and in Germany, where the goal of racial purity was pushed to its horrific limit in the "final solution." Galton himself, Gillham writes, would have been appalled by the extremes to which eugenics was carried.

Extractions: Francis Galton was born at the Larches near Sparbrook, Birmingham on February 16, 1822 and died in 1911. He is best known for his pioneering work on human intelligence. He also earned the reputation of being a great explorer and anthropologist and was elevated to Knighthood in 1909. During his childhood, as the youngest of his family, he had a strong connection with his twelve-year-older sister, Adele, who had a spinal injury and was obliged to lie in bed for most of the time (Forrest, 1974). She became Galton's first educator, and strongly believed that he was some sort of child prodigy. Records exist of his early performances. By the age of 2 ½ he could a little book and few months later sign his name (Pearson, 1914). At the age of five Galton joined the local school and was disappointed when he discovered that none of his friends knew about the Iliad or Marmion. Mrs. French, the schoolteacher, was always impressed by the young gentleman, who was "always to be found studying the abstruse sciences" (Galton, 1908). When he was 8 years old, his father sent him to Boulogne to study French. At the age of 14 he joined the King's Edward School in Birmingham and only after a year he was accepted as a pupil at Birmingham General Hospital. He left school early at the age of 16. Galton's life has attracted the attention of major psychologists. For example Lewis Terman wrote a paper in attempt to estimate Galton's I. Q. He believed that Galton's performance was so exceptional as to be termed that of a genius (Forrest, 1974).

After studying medicine in his hometown Birmingham, in London and in Cambridge, he decided to devote himself to geographic research. He undertook pioneering travels in Africa, the detailed accounts of which were published in 1853 (Egypt, Soudan) and 1891 (South Africa). He was the initiator of scientific meteorology: he invented the weather map, set up the theory of anticyclones and was the first to establish a complete record of short-term climatic phenomena on an European scale. He introduced the use of questionnaires and surveys for collecting data on human communities, which he needed for genealogical and biographical works ( English Men of Science: Their Nature and Nurture , 1874) and for his anthropological studies ( Inquiries into Human Faculty and its Development , 1883). Because of his statements on evolution and hereditary characters of mankind he is nowadays often regarded as a racist.

Full text available as: HTML Although Francis Galton was disdainful of phrenology in his later life, his correspondence shows that he was quite knowledgeable about the subject as a young man, and apparently took it seriously. At the age of 27, following a disappointingly mediocre academic career, he consulted a professional phrenologist who told him his natural abilities were more suited to practical than to purely academic concerns. Shortly thereafter Galton embarked on an African exploration that launched his career as a public figure. It appears probable that this experience helped consolidate Galton's convictions about the importance of innate limitations to every person's abilities - limitations which he later came to see as hereditary. He was the person who coined the word eugenics, using Greek words to express what was originally a Greek concept. He was a cousin of Charles Darwin. Erasmus Darwin was Francis Galton's maternal grandfather and also Charles Darwin's paternal grandfather. Erasmus Darwin developed a theory of evolution that Charles Darwin later expanded and refined. Galton defined his new word this way: "Eugenics is the study of agencies under social control that may improve or impair the racial qualities of future generations, whether physically or mentally." But he wanted more than a little study. In 1905, he wrote about the three stages of eugenics ã first an academic matter, then a practical policy, and finally "it must be introduced into the national consciousness as a new religion." In Memories of My Life, Galton said that the publication of Darwin's book on evolution stirred a rebellion against religious dogma: "The publication in 1859 of The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin made a marked epoch in my own mental development, as it did in that of human thought generally. Its effect was to demolish a multitude of dogmatic barriers by a single stroke, and to arouse a spirit of rebellion against all ancient authorities whose positive and unauthenticated statements were contradicted by modern science."

Este inglés decimonónico, victoriano por súbdito de Victoria, por posición social y por convicción, ideó las bases de un plan de mejora de la raza que posteriormente otros recogieron para llevarlo a la práctica, con distintos motivos y con distintos resultados. Esta es la historia del nacimiento de la eugenesia y una entrevista a Raquel Álvarez Peláez, investigadora del CSIC y experta en la historia de la eugenesia y la vida de Galton, para saber que ocurrió después de Galton. Eugene, bien nacido en griego, es el origen de la palabra eugenesia. La herencia ya forma parte del ideario intelectual desde la Grecia Clásica. Platón habló de herencia y mucho más adelante, durante el siglo XVIII, se hicieron estudios empíricos con plantas como el tabaco, e incluso estudiando personas, para confirmar que efectivamente había una contribución de ambos sexos a la descendencia.
