He not only made decisive and formative contributions to the subjects of geometry, calculus, mechanics, and number theory but also developed methods for solving problems in observational astronomy and demonstrated useful applications of mathematics in technology and public affairs. Euler's mathematical ability earned him the esteem of Johann Bernoulli, one of the first mathematicians in Europe at that time, and of his sons Daniel and Nicolas. In 1727 he moved to St. Petersburg, where he became an associate of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences and in 1733 succeeded Daniel Bernoulli to the chair of mathematics. By means of his numerous books and memoirs that he submitted to the academy, Euler carried integral calculus to a higher degree of perfection, developed the theory of trigonometric and logarithmic functions, reduced analytical operations to a greater simplicity, and threw new light on nearly all parts of pure mathematics. Overtaxing himself, Euler in 1735 lost the sight of one eye. Then, invited by Frederick the Great in 1741, he became a member of the Berlin Academy, where for 25 years he produced a steady stream of publications, many of which he contributed to the St. Petersburg Academy, which granted him a pension. Extractions: One of the greatest mathematicians of the 18th century, Leonhard Euler was responsible for important advancements in a number of different areas, especially number theory. There are Euler theorems, Euler numbers and Euler formulas in a different fields, each distinct because Euler contributed to so many specialties. In the field of philosophy, Euler was the first to systematically employ logic diagrams to map out the structure of logical statements and arguments. Circles to represent classes and diagram syllogisms had earlier been used by Leibniz and others, but Euler was the first to explain in detail how the circles can and should be used. This understanding would later be expanded upon by John Venn and such diagrams are now known as Venn Diagrams. Se puede mencionar la obra del clan de los Bernoulli, así como la de Hermann, uno de sus protegidos suizos, pero el matemático más destacado que produjo Suiza durante esta época (o en cualquier otra de la historia) fue Leonhard Euler (1707-1783), que nació en Basilea. El padre de Euler era un pastor calvinista que, lo mismo que el padre de Jacques Bernoulli, esperaba que su hijo siguiera también el camino del sagrado misterio. El muchacho, sin embargo estudió con Jean Bernoulli junto a sus hijos Nicolás y Daniel, y en este ambiente favorable descubrió su vocación. Sin embargo, la amplitud de conocimientos adquiridos le resultó muy útil cuando en 1727 recibió una invitación para trabajar en la Academia de Ciencias de San Petersburgo en Rusia, donde se encontraban desde dos años antes, trabajando como profesores de matemáticas, los hermanos Nicolás y Daniel Bernoulli. Esta importante institución había sido fundada en el año 1725 por Catalina I, siguiendo las líneas trazadas por su difunto esposo Pedro el Grande, aconsejado por Leibniz. Fue la primera institución científica de Rusia. En álgebra se ocupó de la eliminación, descomposición en fracciones simples, teoría de ecuaciones, etc. Pretendiendo dar un método general para resolver ecuaciones de cualquier grado, ideó un procedimiento válido hasta las de cuarto grado inclusive. Pero el trabajo más original de Euler se desarrolla en el cálculo infinitesimal. A los veinte años consiguió el primero de los doce premios que, con el tiempo, había de concederle la Academia Francesa y, por invitación de Catalina I de Rusia, se incorporó a la Academia de San Petersburgo merced a la gestión de los Bernoulli, instalados allí desde 1725. En 1733 sucedió a Daniel Bernoulli al frente de la sección de matemáticas de dicha Academia, y al año siguiente contrajo matrimonio con la hija de un pintor suizo que Pedro el Grande había traído a Rusia. En 1741, invitado por Federico II el Grande, se trasladó a la Academia de Berlín, al frente de la cual sucedió a Maupertuis en 1756, como presidente en funciones. En 1766 aceptó una oferta de Catalina la Grande para reincorporarse a San Petersburgo. Ese mismo año quedó ciego a causa de una afección de cataratas, tras haber perdido ya la visión del ojo derecho en 1735.

In this paper Euler establishes his famous formula V - E + F = 2 relating the number V of vertices, E of edges and F of faces of any polyhedron. This rather simple formula was missed by both Archimedes and Descartes, although both wrote extensively on polyhedra. Before Euler it seems to have been impossible to think of geometrical properties without measurement being involved. The second part of the paper (pp 140-160) gives a remarkably clever proof based on dissecting solids into tetrahedral slices. Euler's work was far ahead of its time: further advances in topology had to wait another century, with the work of Listing, Möbius and Riemann. 'Euler was also the author of the first studies on topology... In a letter to Goldbach [written in 1750 but published here in 1758] he cited a number of properties of polyhedra, among them the following: the number of vertices, S, edges, A, and sides H, of a polyhedron are connected by an equality S - A + H = 2... The Euler characteristic S - A + H and its generalization for multi-dimensional complexes as given by H. Poincaré is one of the principal invariants of modern topology' (DSB, stating wrongly that the theorem had been known to Descartes; this has now been proved erroneous).
