Extractions: Surgeons from the University of Louisville implant the first self-contained artificial heart, a titanium and plastic pump, into Robert Tools at Jewish Hospital. Doctors said they expect the new implant to extend the patient's life only a month or so. But the device is considered a technological leap from mechanical hearts used in the 1980s, which were attached by wires and tubes to machinery outside the body. Drs. Laman Gray and Robert Dowling, who trained by implanting the pump in baby cows, performed the surgery. Surgical teams at four other hospitals around the country had been trained to do the surgery, but Louisville was first. Experts hope that the experimental heart, made by Abiomed Inc. of Danvers, Massachusetts, will lead to new hope for patients with failing hearts.

Extractions: - NEWS Friday, August 3, 2001 Never heard of Anzhi Makhackala? Anzhi Makhackala have been stricken by a terrifying catalogue of hijackings, shootings and assaults in their short-but-colourful history. They were banned from their 10,000-capacity Dinamo Stadium for three matches last season after referee Yuri Chebotaryov and league official Nikolai Kozyakov were beaten up following a match against Dynamo Moscow. 'It was an outrageous, shameful act,' said Kozyakov. 'UEFA banned Moldovan side Contructorul for five years following a similar incident.' Anzhi's own employees have not been spared from abuse, with assistant coach Alexander Markarov surviving an assassination attempt two years ago. A masked gunman shot the coach as he left his home in a suburb of Makhachkala, the bullet grazing the cheek of the terrified 48-year-old. Head coach Gadji Gadjiev then suffered a heart attack after his side were pipped to third place in the Russian championship last season. The most terrifying incident, however, occurred last November when a plane carrying Anzhi officials and fans to Moscow for a league game was hijacked. A man claiming to have a bomb strapped to his wrist demanded the plane be taken to Israel, with security officials believing he was a terrorist from Chechnya.
