Obituary - Mr Jim Hancock 1914 - 2001 J New finds on display at Taunton Museum O Also now on view at Taunton Castle is another remarkable recent acquisition. This is a pair of late Anglo-Saxon sculptures in oolitic limestone, recovered from the floor of a farm building near Congresbury. The two blocks are carved in high relief with what appears to have been part of an external frieze from a major ecclesiastical building, probably the Minster church at Congresbury itself. One block shows the lower part of a female figure with fluttering, angular draperies while the other, a cornerstone, shows on two adjoining faces the haloed heads of Christ and a tonsured male saint framed in round headed arches. Full scholarly publication of these important pieces, which probably date from the late 11th century, is awaited with interest.

Maclaurin Two are well documented, one being with william braikenridge (see our biography ofbraikenridge in this archive, and also 16) on the argument over the result http://students.bath.ac.uk/ma2mt/Maclaurin.html
Extractions: Colin Maclaurin was born in Kilmodan where his father, John Maclaurin, was the minister of the parish. The village (population 387 in 1904) is on the river Ruel and the church is at Glendaruel. You can see a picture of Kilmodan Church John Maclaurin was more of a scholar than one would expect of a parish minister, for he had translated the Psalms into Gaelic. Colin, however, never knew his father, for he died when Colin was six weeks old. Colin was the youngest of three sons, the oldest being John, while the second was Daniel who died at a young age. Colin Maclaurin's mother inherited a small estate in Argyllshire and it was on the estate that Colin spent the early years of his life. His mother wanted a good education for Colin and his brother John, so the family moved to Dumbarton where the boys attended school. In 1707, when Colin was nine years old, his mother died so the task of bringing up Colin and his brother John fell to their uncle Daniel Maclaurin who was the minister at Kilfinnan on Loch Fyne. Colin became a student at the University of Glasgow in 1709 at the age of eleven years. This may seem an unbelievable age for someone to begin their university education, but it was not so amazing at this time as it would be today. Basically Scottish schools and universities competed for the best pupils at that time, rather than a university education being seen as following a school education as is the norm today.

Extractions: Entry in Kelly's Directory for Norfolk, 1896, pp. 484-5. WINTERTON is a parish and fishing village, 1 miles north from Hemsby station on the Midland and Great Northern railway and about 8 miles north-by-west from Yarmouth and 21 from Norwich, in the Eastern division of the county, incorporated hundreds, petty sessional division and incorporation of East and West Flegg, county court district of Great Yarmouth, rural deanery of Flegg and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The Primitive Methodist chapel here was built in 1876. Here is a coast-guard station with 7 men and a chief officer. In 1859 a surf boat was placed here by the National Life Boat Institution, and a sailing life boat in 1881; Edward Robert Boult is honorary secretary. The lighthouse here, situated on elevated ground, is nearly 70 feet high and is illuminated by a prismatic reflector. About 150 fishermen are employed in the herring and mackerel fisheries. Winterton had once a market and a fair, but both have long been obsolete. Hill House is the seat of Mrs. Hume, and has very fine ranges of hot-houses and conservatories. This place gives the title of Earl to the Turnour family. The Earl of Winterton, who is lord of the manor, the trustees of the late F. Charsley esq. and Mrs. Hume are the chief landowners. Winterton Ness, a principal and dangerous promontory on the east coast, is within this parish, and the Trinity Board, in 1850, at the request of the late Joseph Hume esq. M.P. placed a buoy on it. The coast generally is at this point very dangerous to shipping; in ancient times the right of wreckage was appurtenant to the manor, and on one occasion a cause of dispute between the Abbot of St. Benet's-at-Holme and the prior of Norwich. A letter on the subject from William Peacock, steward to Sir John Paxton, then lord of the manor, dated 19 Nov. 1477, is included in the Paston letters.
