Bulletin Issue 24 - Adam Smith Institute Prof bosanquet covered the need for the NHS to use private suppliers, followed byStephen Pollard, exFabians and SMF, and now with the Daily Express, dealing http://www.adamsmith.org/policy/bulletin/b24.htm
Extractions: The Adam Smith Institute is about to launch a series of initiatives designed to bring about greater independence from government for the universities. As the first step, the ASI has asked MORI to perform a nationwide poll of students. The poll asks them what it is like to be a student in Britain today. It probes the allocation of their financial resources, and asks them what factors have influenced their career choices. Crucially, the poll attempts to discover whether students would like to see universities have more control over their own affairs, and especially of their finances. The Institute wants to find out whether students think that politicians and bureaucrats are making a good job of running universities, or if they think that universities might make a better job of it themselves. The questions include ones which seek to learn whether or not students think that a university education represents good value, and if they think it is a worthwhile investment. They are asked against a background which has seen the proportion of the age-group going through higher education rise from one in nine when Lady Thatcher took office, to more than one in three when John Major left office. During these 18 years, there were no major changes to the way in which universities are structured, or in how they are run. Indeed, they are substantially as they were when they serviced a 5 percent élite, even though they now educate 35 percent of the age-group. The question is, even though students now have to make personal payment toward it, and to go into debt to receive it, whether it still represents good value and a worthwhile experience for them.

Extractions: In 1817 England, a mysterious young woman appears speaking a foreign tongue and is soon arrested for begging. A good-intentioned but opportunistic British pair (Broadbent, Hughes) takes her in, believing her to be a kidnapped Pacific island princess. Not everyone agrees, of course. Especially skeptical are a local reporter (Rea) and a studious professor (Lithgow). And they may be right. The cinematography (by Freddie Francis, The Elephant Man (1980)) makes the United Kingdom locations come alive.
