After this he became an assistant to his teacher Josef Stefan Boltzmann taught at Graz, moved to Heidelberg and then to Berlin. In these places he studied under Bunsen, Kirchhoff and Helmholtz In 1869 Boltzmann was appointed to a chair of theoretical physics at Graz. He held this post for four years then, in 1873, he accepted the chair of mathematics at Vienna. He did not stay very long in any place and after three years he was back in Graz, this time in the chair of experimental physics. After another three years, in 1894, Boltzmann moved back to Vienna, this time to a chair of theoretical physics. In 1900 he moved to Leipzig but here he was a colleague of his strongest scientific opponent W Ostwald. Depressed by arguments with Ostwald which are described below he unsuccessfully attempted suicide during his time in Leipzig. In 1902 he returned to Vienna to his chair of theoretical physics which had not been filled. Boltzmann obtained the Maxwell -Boltzmann distribution in 1871, namely the average energy of motion of a molecule is the same for each direction. He was one of the first to recognise the importance of
Extractions: Austrian physicist who established the relationship between entropy and the statistical analysis of molecular motion in 1877, founding the branch of physics known as statistical mechanics Boltzmann's statistical interpretation led him to conclude that entropy -decreasing processes were exceedingly improbable but not absolutely impossible. It also paved the way for the development of quantum mechanics, which is inherently a statistical theory. Boltzmann argued that the equipartition theorem was a fundamental feature of the kinetic theory. He also derived the " H-theorem " and Boltzmann equation in his paper of 1872. The H-theorem expresses the increase in entropy of an irreversible process. Because of Boltzmann's dense and difficult style, his work was disseminated only after its exigesis by Ehrenfest in 1911. Boltzmann is buried in the Central Cemetery in Vienna. The equation , where S is entropy k is Boltzmann's constant stands for the natural logarithm and W is the number of possible "states" of a system is written on Boltzmann's tombstone, although

Ludwig-Boltzmann-Institute For Urban Ethology /Vienna-Austria ludwig boltzmann INSTITUTE FOR URBAN ETHOLOGY AT THE INSTITUTE FORHUMAN BIOLOGY (UNIVERSITY OF VIENNA). Address Althanstrasse 14 http://evolution.anthro.univie.ac.at/institutes/urbanethology/goals.html
Extractions: E-mail directly from here The institute was founded in 1991 by the Ludwig-Boltzmann-Society and is directed by Irenaeus Eibl-Eibesfeldt and Karl Grammer . The Institute is currently hosted by the Institute of Human Biology at the University of Vienna. The research is dedicated to all kinds of mass-phenomena in big cities. In this century human livelyhood migrated increasingly from the land to the cities. From 1950 to 1978 the urban world population doubled. If this trend continues, the number will even double until the year 2000; then the majority of the world population will live in cities. The urban environment has become the favoured habitat for humans. But most of us do quite well in this relatively new environment, despite daily hazzles, stress and anonymity. The question then becomes inhowfar evolutionary theories can predict human behaviour in such an anonymous urban environment. Ethological research of the last 20 years showed that the human being is equipped with innate behavioural tendencies and perceptions that had evolved as evolutionary adaptions to the Stone Age when he lived in small groups as a hunter and gatherer.

After the October Revolution, he became an organizer and leader of Proletcult. After 1921, he left politics to work in the field of science. Bogdanov, B. (1884-1919) Menshevik Liquidator. Bohr, Niels (1885 - 1962) Bohr was brought up in a wealthy and influential Copenhagen family, his father a renowned physiologist and his brother a mathematician. After completing his doctorate in the electron theory of metal at the University of Copenhagn, Bohr joined J.J. Thomson at Cambridge, but in 1912 joined Rutherford's in Manchester, a group studying the structure of the atom. It was here that Bohr worked on the theoretical implications of Rutherford's nuclear model of the atom and he was among the first to see the importance of the number of electrons in an atom's structure in determining the physical and chemical properties of an element. Bohr was the first to see that a stable atomic structure was possible if energy levels were inherently restricted to discrete levels, a possibility made conceiveable by Max Planck's discovery of the discrete properties of radiation spectra. Bohr succeeded in deriving the observed line spectrum of light emitted by atomic hydrogen from an analysis of the electron structure of the hydrogen atom.

The Institute was founded in 1992 by Felix Ermacora (), Manfred Nowak and Hannes Tretter, under the umbrella of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society, a leading Austrian research association named after the physicist and philosopher Ludwig Boltzmann (1844-1906). The primary focus of the Boltzmann Institutes work lies in research activities in the field of human rights, both on the national and the international level. BIM staff is also engaged extensively in human rights teaching and training, and the Institute hosts a public human rights library.
