Extractions: Previous (Alphabetically) Next Welcome page Betti is noted for his contributions to algebra and topology. Betti studied at the University of Pisa, later was to become a professor (1857) and rector there and director of its teacher's college. Under his leadership the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa became the leading Italian centre for mathematical research and mathematical education. Betti is noted for his contributions to algebra and topology. His early work is in the area of equations and algebra. Betti extended and gave proofs relating to the algebraic concepts of Evariste Galois . These had been previously given without proofs. Betti thus made an important contribution to the transition from classical to modern algebra. He published this in several works starting in 1851. He was the first to give a proof that the Galois group is closed under multiplication.

Extractions: Enrico Betti 's father died when he was very young and his mother had to bring him up and educate him on her own. Betti studied mathematics and physics at the University of Pisa and while there he was taught by Mossotti. Betti graduated with a degree in mathematics in 1846 and, following this, he was appointed as an assistant at the university. He worked at the university at a time when political and military events in Italy were intensifying as the country came nearer to unification. There were not only the internal politics of unification but there were problems with Austria and France, both countries having their own agendas. Mossotti strongly supported the fight for independence and led a Tuscany University Battalion in an attempt to achieve this aim. Betti joined the battalion led by Mossotti and he fought in two battles, being those of Curtatone and Montanara. After working as an assistant at the University of Pisa, Betti returned to his home town of Pistoia where he became a teacher of mathematics at a secondary school in the town in 1849. In 1854 he moved to Florence where again he taught in a secondary school. He was appointed as professor of higher algebra at the University of Pisa in 1857. In the following year Betti, along with

His early work was in the theory of equations and algebra. He extended and furnished proofs for Galois's work, which had previously been stated in part without demonstrations or proofs. Betti was the first to resolve integral functions of a complex variable into their primary factors. His later work was decisively affected by the arrival in Pisa of the German mathematician Bernhard Riemann in 1863. They became close friends, and Riemann awakened Betti's interest in mathematical physics, in particular potential theory and elasticity, and inspired his memoir on topology. Betti, Enrico betti, enrico (18231892). Italian mathematician who was the firstto provide a thorough exposition and development of the theory http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/B/Betti/1.html
Extractions: Betti was born near Pistoia, Tuscany, and studied physical and mathematical sciences at Pisa, where he was professor from 1856. Betti had fought against Austria during the first wars of Italian independence and in 1862 he became a member of the new Italian parliament. He entered the government as undersecretary of state for education 1874 and served in the senate after 1884. Betti's most important work was on algebra and the theory of equations. In papers published 1852 and 1855 he gave proofs of most of Galois's major theorems. In so doing he became the first mathematician to resolve integral functions of a complex variable into their primary factors. He also developed the theory of elliptical functions. Betti turned to mathematical physics 1863. In 1878 he gave the law of reciprocity in elasticity theory which became known as Betti's theorem. Along the way, conducting research into 'analysis situs' in hyperspace in 1871, he also did valuable work on numbers characterizing the connection of a variety, these later becoming known as Betti numbers.
