Untitled Gauss Joseph Louis Lagrange (17361813) Euler was hailed by his teacher johan Bernoullias the first of mathematicians ( mathematicorum princeps ) in 1745. http://www.math.ucla.edu/~hida/106.1.02f/Hist4.html
Extractions: Through the works of Pierre de Fermat and Leonhard Euler, we saw how the foundation of Number Theory was established. At the beginning of the career of Euler, he was practically alone, pursuing the research in Number theory. Later he was joined by two strong mathematicians: Joseph Louis Lagrange (1736-1813) and Adrian -Marie Legendre (1752-1833). The work of these three mathematicians was completed and enormously developed by Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855). We will sketch in this fourth note the contribution to Number Theory by Lagrange, Legendre and Gauss Euler was hailed by his teacher Johan Bernoulli as "the first of mathematicians" ( "mathematicorum princeps" ) in 1745. By 1775, Euler wrote to Lagrange: "It is most flattering to me to have my successor in Berlin the most outstanding geometer of this century" ([W] page 309). In this way, Lagrange got the title of "the first of mathematicians". Lagrange succeeded Euler's position as the director of Mathematics division at the Academy of Science at Berlin in 1766. In the next century, the title: "mathematicorum princeps" was bestowed to upon Gauss by unanimous consent of his countrymen. It has not been in use since (as Weil wrote). In any case, Lagrange was a very modest person: Clairaut once described Lagrange (to Daniel Bernoulli) as:
