   Extractions: Jacob studied theology at Basel and at the same time taught himself mathematics. After a short period as a private tutor in Geneva and France, he travelled through the Netherlands, England and Germany. During this journey he became acquainted with the contemporary mathematics and physics of Descartes, Huygens, Wallis and Barrow. In 1687 Jacob was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University of Basel. In the following years he rediscovered, together with his brother Johann, the secrets of Leibniz's calculus and began a correspondence with Leibniz. Jacob published his discoveries in more than sixty papers in the scientific journals of his time. For himself, he recorded his thoughts in a scientific diary ( Meditationes ), which is an outstanding testimony to his mathematical genius. Jacob published no books; his Ars Conjectandi remained unfinished and did not appear until eight years after his death. Recognized as one of the greatest mathematicians of his time, Jacob died in Basel in 1705. "The devices of this calculus are yet known to few people, and I do not know anybody who has understood my meaning better than this famous man."

During the time that Jacob Bernoulli was taking his university degree in theology he was studying mathematics and astronomy against the wishes of his parents. In 1676, finishing his degree, Bernoulli moved to Geneva where he worked as a tutor. He then travelled to France spending 2 years studying with the followers of Descartes. In 1681 Bernoulli travelled to the Netherlands where he met many mathematicians. Continuing his studies with the leading mathematicians and scientists of Europe he went to England where, among others, he met Boyle and Hooke. As a result of his travels, Bernoulli began a correspondence with many mathematicians which he carried on over many years. Jacob Bernoulli returned to Switzerland and taught mechanics at the University in Basel from 1683, giving a series of important lectures on the mechanics of solids and liquids. Bernoulli studied the work of Descartes, Wallis, and Barrow and through these he became interested in infinitesimal geometry. Jacob began publishing in 1682. Jacob's younger brother, Johann Bernoulli, began to work on mathematical topics, and asked him to teach him mathematics. Jacob Bernoulli was appointed professor of mathematics in Basel in 1687 and the two brothers began to study the calculus as presented by Leibniz in his 1684 paper on the differential calculus. It must be understood that Leibniz's publications on the calculus were very obscure to mathematicians of that time and the Bernoullis were the first to try to understand and apply Leibniz's theories.

Following the family tradition he took a degree in law but his interests were in mathematics and mathematical physics. In 1782 Jacob(II) Bernoulli's uncle Daniel Bernoulli died and his chair of physics in Basel became vacant. Jacob(II) applied for the chair and presented a work on mathematical physics to support his application. The decison as to who should fill the vacant chair was not made on academic grounds but was made by drawing lots. Jacob(II) Bernoulli was unlucky and he was not offered this position he would really have liked. He was then appointed as secretary to the Imperial Envoy to Turin and Venice. However, he was soon given the chance of another academic post when he received an offer from St Petersburg. He went to St Petersburg and began to write important works on mathematical physics which he presented to the St Petersburg Academy. These treatises were on elasticity, hydrostatics and ballistics. Despite the rather harsh climate, the city of St Petersburg had great attractions for Jacob(II) Bernoulli since his uncle

Bernoullische Ungleichung verwendete und erstmals die vollständige Induktion systematisch zu einem allg. Beweisverfahren ausbaute. Die selbstständige Meisterung der von Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz erfundenen Infinitesimalrechnung ab 1684 war eine Pionierleistung B.s und seines Bruders Johann, die zu zahlreichen neuen Entdeckungen führte (1691 Theorema aureum -> No 13 ) und v.a. der Basler Jacob Hermann.
