The resulta project she titles "A Family of Curves" won her a Tübitak Project Competition award from the Turkish National Science Foundation. Ivars Peterson's MathLand September 2, 1996 Beyond the Ellipse There's a simple trick one can use to draw an ellipse. Tie the ends of a length of string to two pins (or thumbtacks) stuck in a sheet of paper on a drawing board. Then, keeping the string taut with the point of a pencil, allow the pencil to trace a path around the pins. The resulting curve is an ellipse, with the two pins, or fixed points, representing its foci. This drawing method takes advantage of the geometric fact that the sum of the distances from the foci of an ellipse is the same for all points on the curve. Thus, If A and B are the foci of an ellipse, the total distance (AP + PB) from the foci to any point P on the curve is constant.

Just consider the following two events: when he was 3 years old he corrected his father's arithmetic, and in school, when he was in the third grade, he developed a formula for finding the sum of any arithmetic progression. Gauss was born in Brunswick, Germany as the only son of poor peasants living in miserable conditions. He exhibited such early genius that his family and neighbors called him the "wonder child". When he was two years old, he gradually got his parents to tell him how to pronounce all the letters of the alphabet. Then, by sounding out combinations of letters, he learned (on his own) to read aloud. He also picked up the meanings of the number symbols and learned to do arithmetical calculations. Gauss was born on April 30, 1777 in Brunswick, Germany, and died on February 23, 1855, after a full and prolific lifetime. Gauss had an early start on his education. A check of the account showed that the figure named by the young Gauss was correct" (Bell). Another famous story is about Gauss' early education. When Gauss was around seven or eight years old, his elementary school class was told to sum up all the numbers from 1 to 100. This was supposed to serve as busy work; the teacher also planned to show them the shortcut. However, Gauss beat him to itwith one glance, he was able to figure out that all he had to do was to match the numbers up in pairs. There would be 50 pairs of numbers, each summing to 101, so all Gauss did was to multiply 50 by 101. This amazed his teacher, who then continued to encourage Gauss in his studies, sending for special math books. When Gauss' teacher was no longer able to teach Gauss anything, he was referred to the Duke of Brunswick, who gave him a stipend so that he was able to continue to pursue his studies (Falbo).
