Extractions: Sony Classical (4 of 5 stars) Music Category: FILM MUSIC As an orchestrator, Nino Rota (1911-1979) may not have been in a league with his film-composer colleagues Bernard Herr- mann or Erich Wolfgang Korngold, but no one can say his music wasn't effective. From the piercingly sad strains of La Strada to the wonderfully loopy march from 8 1/2, Rota's music was perfectly wedded to the vision on the screen. He found his most congenial collaborator in Federico Fellini, but Rota also worked with Visconti, Coppola and Zeffirelli. It's unfortunate that most people remember Rota as the composer of the gooey "A Time for Us" from Romeo and Juliet, and the overexposed "Love Theme" from The Godfather, because he wrote so much other and better music. Rota no doubt would have approved of Muti as an interpreter, whose burgeoning talents he admired in Italy when Muti was his student at the Bari Conservatory. This is Muti's second recording of Rota's music; the first included the ballet "La Strada" (constructed from the film's themes) and the dance sequences from The Leopard. One of the attractions of Rota's music is its unpredictability; it can either be melancholy or jovial, or somewhere in between. The moody trumpet solo from Fellini's La Dolce Vita is included here, as is the bouncy, swirling music from 8 1/2, which Muti whips into a frenzy.

Donarsi agli altri non è stata, per Nina, solo una scelta professionale, ma uno stile di vita la cui umanità si manifestava attraverso i pellegrinaggi al santuario della Madonna di Lourdes dove accompagnava i malati, nell'assistenza a domicilio di persone anziane e bisognose di cure, nelle amorevoli cure prestate all'anziano padre, nell'impegno nell'Azione Cattolica e nell'organizzazione dei campi scuola per i giovani di Procida, nelle adozioni a distanza. Della gente di mare aveva il forte e tenace carattere che l'aiutava ad affrontare ed a superare i molti momenti di difficoltà, quando l'età e la salute facevano abbandonare a suo padre, uomo di mare, il timone della barca di casa Scotto.

Extractions: Grace Chisholm Young (18681944) This book includes essays on 43 women mathematicians, each essay consisting of a biographical sketch, a review/assessment of her work, and a bibliography which usually lists most of her mathematical works, a few works about her, and occasionally a few other references. The essays are arranged alphabetically by the women's best-known professional names. A better arrangement would have been by the periods within which the women worked; an approximation to that can be achieved by using the list in Appendix A of the included women ordered by birthdate. With its many appendices and its two good indexes, the bibliographic structure of this book is excellent. This together with its reviews of the work of many less-known women mathematicians makes it a valuable contribution to the history of mathematics.
