Extractions: R AYMOND LOUIS WILDER, LOVED by his family, friends, students, and colleagues, was a pioneer in the emerging discipline of topology and attained international acclaim for his creation and development of generalized manifolds. He also had a lifelong scholarly interest in anthropology and the foundations of mathematics. This erudition resulted in many articles and two important books on the cultural origins and development of mathematics. He was born in 1896 in Palmer, Massachusetts, and as a youth attended schools in that town. His family was musical, and he played the cornet in the family orchestra at dances and fairs. His flair at the piano resulted in employment at the local movie house to accompany the silent films. Love for music making never left him, although later he usually stuck with the classics. Wilder entered Brown University in 1914. This was interrupted by World War I, and he served two years in the Navy as an ensign. He returned to Brown and completed his bachelor's degree in 1920 and his master's degree in actuarial science in 1921. In the meantime, he had married the charming Una Maude Greene. They had three daughters: Mrs. Mary Jane Jessop of Long Beach, California, Mrs. Kermit Watkins of Altadena, California, Dr. Beth Dillingham of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a son Dr. David E. Wilder of Pound Ridge, New York. At the time of Wilder's death in Santa Barbara in 1982 there were in addition 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His wife, Una, survived him for an additional 19 years, dying at the age of 100 in Long Beach.

From Vladivostok he came to Paris and Brno, where as a student he sang in the Russian choir of Boris Evtushenko, later on member of the Jaroff choir. Viktor sang with Jaroff when he was on tour in Czechoslovakia in the twenties. Boris Evtushenko (1948 - 1949) Born 1899 in Kharkov, came with the remains of the White army to Turkey, conductor of a Russian choir in Brno, emigrated to America, basso soloist of Serge Jaroff in the 1948/49 season, became conductor of the Russian Orthodox Church of Hartford, Connecticut. Keith Talley (1930) As a bass who could sing very very low Keith was asked to add the choir, even though he was not a Russian. He loved contests with the other basses as he could sing to the C - the lowest c on the piano - and only one other bass could.

Extractions: 2001-2002 UFRF Professors The University of Florida Research Foundation (UFRF) recently recognized its annual class of UF Research Foundation Professors. The three-year professorships were created by UFRF to recognize faculty who have established a distinguished record of research and scholarship that is expected to lead to continuing distinction in their field. Six CLAS professors received the awards this year, which include a $5,000 annual salary supplement and a one-time $3,000 research grant. Since it was founded in 1986 to enhance research at UF, UFRF has become the primary vehicle for handling research and intellectual property interactions with private companies and foundations. Today, it manages more than 800 grants and some 60 licensed technologies. Alexander Dranishnikov Alexander Dranishnikov, professor of mathematics, works in the field of topology, which is an offshoot of geometry. The great mathematician David Hilbert defined a topologist as a person who does not see the difference between a doughnut and a beer mug, since each has one hole in it. These holes are "visual" topological invariants. Many geometric objects have less visual topological invariants. One of them is dimension. The dimension of a line or a plane is easy to see, but seeing the dimension of general topological spaces is not easy. Dranishnikov's most prominent research achievement to date is solving the Alexandroff problem, first stated in the 1920s, which concerns the equivalence between geometric and algebraic approaches to the definition of dimension. Several prominent mathematicians were unable to solve the problem, and by the 1970s it had gained the reputation of being unbreakable. Using a unique application of a mathematical tool called the K-theory, Dranishnikov solved the Alexandroff problem in 1988. The K-theory, which has been around for more than 30 years, is an evolutionary step in the development of the idea of homology (the classification of configurations into distinct types that imposes an algebraic structure on families of geometric figures). For his solution of the problem, Dranishnikov received an award from the Russian Academy of Science as well as the Bing Award, presented to Dranishnikov in 1990 at Southwest Texas State University.

Extractions: 4:10 pm, room SC-1431. Colloquium: Alexander Dranishnikov , of the University of Florida , will speak about "Alexandroff's Problem and the Novikov Conjecture." Abstract: In late 20s P.S. Alexandroff came with a definition of the cohomological dimension and he posed the natural problem: Does the cohomological dimension agree with the standard (covering) dimension for compact metric spaces? This problem has a long history. It was finally solved only in late 80s. Recently a shadow of the Alexandroff problem appeared in the coarse approach to the Novikov higher signatures conjecture
