Extractions: T he first time I read a story by Alexander Irvine, I thought, here is a writer with a devious and logical mind. The story was "Akhenaten," in which the pharaoh with the spindly arms and elongated head turns out to be a visitor from the distant future, a temporal alien who wins the love of Amenhotep's wife Tiye, succeeds Amenhotep to the throne of Egypt, and imposes the worship of Aten, the sun-god, on his adopted land. As an explanation of Akhenaten's anomalous monotheistic reign, Irvine's version makes considerable sense. Why not, I found myself thinking. According to Akhenaten's supposedly realistic statues, he looked more like something from Close Encounters than your average Egyptian. Who knows, it could have happened that way. In A Scattering of Jades Irvine does again what he has done so well in his stories: rewrite history, or rather write the strange truth behind a history we think we know. This time the year is 1843, the place is New York City, and the history is as American as apple pie. But in Irvine's America, Aaron Burr conspires with his financial backer Harman Blennerhassett and an itinerant showman named Riley Steen to revive the Aztec god Tlaloc, whose return will bring about the time of the Sixth Sun, in which sacrificial fires will once again burn to the gods and the conspirators will rule an American empire. According to Burr's research in the archives of the Tammany Society, to revive Tlaloc the conspirators must locate a

Independently of his mainstream academic career, he developed a deep and active interest in the prehistoric megalithic sites of Britain and Brittany, visiting and surveying many hundreds of them over a period of forty years. Thoms interpretations of the field data have aroused strong interest and some intense controversy. The main areas of debate are: geometry (the methods used to set out the megalithic rings, many of which appear to be non-circular); mensuration (the possible use of standard units of measurement in setting out rings and rows); and astronomy (the connection between structures aligned upon the horizon and the rising and setting positions of the sun, moon or stars). Irvine Website Advertisement document.write(''); Alexander C. Irvine (often bylined as Alex Irvine) has gathered quite a bit of well-deserved notice for his short fiction over the last couple of years. This makes his first novel, A Scattering of Jades , one of the most anticipated debuts of the year. To some extent, it satisfies: indeed it may be the best first SF novel I've seen this year. On the other hand, it's not by any means a complete success: suffice it to say that I'm still excited about Irvine's potential, but I don't feel he has reached that potential in this novel. A Scattering of Jades is firmly in Tim Powers territory. It's a fantasy cum secret history dealing with obscure gods and magic impinging on the life of an ordinary man. The man ends up injured, just as most of Powers' heroes, and he must make a desperate journey, trusting implausible forces, to save a loved one. In this case, the gods are mostly Aztec gods, particularly Tlaloc, with a leavening of Lenni Lenape gods. And the "secret history" is of the United States, dealing with Aaron Burr's mad ambitions and their aftermath, and more directly with the most horrible blot on U.S. history: slavery.

Extractions: Alexander C. Irvine, A Scattering of Jades (Tor Books, 2002) When an author like Charles de Lint endorses no, sings the praises of a first novel, we here at GMR take notice. As one of our best fantasy authors today, de Lint is in a position to know what hes talking about, and while he uses Tim Powers as a touchstone for describing Alexander Irvines style, he is quick to note that Irvine has his own unique voice in story-telling. Indeed he does. A Scattering of Jades is a remarkable debut novel, combining secret historical conspiracies, magic, adventure, Aztec mythology, and tons of action to give readers a jolting ricochet ride. Irvine puts together a plot so gripping you may need to borrow the local Fire Departments Jaws of Life to pry yourself free! The multiple subplots provide the reader with plenty of fuel for takeoff into the imaginary realms. Since Irvine uses actual American history as a backdrop for much of his story, as well as authentic Native American myths, the most unlikely scenarios within the plot seem unbelievably credible. The story begins in a New York City tenement building basement in 1841, and stays true to the historic atmosphere. There are sawdust-floored saloons, demonstrating abolitionists, traveling medicine men with wagons full of mysterious elixirs, and colonies of Dickinsonian street urchins. Irvines characters are a delightful stew of the bizarre and quirky, mixing actual persons such as Edgar Allen Poe, P.T. Barnum and Aaron Burr with a fictitious street gang called the Dead Rabbits, a snake-oil-salesman/puppeteer, and a kidnapped girl disfigured according to the rites of an ancient Aztec ritual. There is a whole slew or at least a partial pantheon of Mesoamerican gods. Toss in a midget henchman who bites peoples ears off, and a deity known as Meskansisal, the Mask Bearer, who manifests as a talking bear. Add a pinch of the reanimated dead, and a pair of very human heroes: Archie, the father of the runaway girl, and Stephen, a guide at the newly discovered Mammoth Caves in Kentucky who is also a slave seeking freedom. Everyone in this novel wants something, but whatever each individual seeks is inextricably intertwined with the fates of all the others.
