Extractions: READ FOR 5 OCTOBER A Royal Coronation: Maximilian I at Frankfurt (April 1486) INTRODUCTION . From a modern German translation of an anonymous Latin original by an eyewitness. As was customary, Maximilian was elected King of the Romans and successor to the Empire during the lifetime of his father, Emperor Frederick IIII (d. 1493). He was then crowned king with the elaborate religious and secular ceremonies described in this account. Unlike his father, Maximilian was never crowned emperor by the pope, but in 1507 he crowned himself emperor in the cathedral of Trent. Ceremonial ritual is far more conservative, of course, than is law, and on these great ceremonial occasions the Holy Roman Empire appeared in its most traditional guise. Translated by T. A. Brady, Jr.] After the blessing they raise the King up to his knees and bared his shoulders, breast, and elbows, as he sat in prayer with folded hands. The Archbishop of Cologne anointed him with the oil of catechumens on the head, on the breast, between the shoulder blades, and on the shoulders; then he anointed also the palms of his hands, praying as he did so. Meanwhile, the clergy sang "The Lord has Anointed You." Now the archbishops led the King into the sacristy, where the senior cathedral canon wiped the anointed places of his body with the purest wool. The canons then put shoes and an alb on him, plus a stole crossed over his breast.[8] The King returned before the altar, where he prostrated himself with arms out in the form of a cross, while the Archbishop of Cologne spoke a blessing.

He was the son of Gunther III, Count of Kevernburg, and began his studies at Hildesheim, completing them later at Paris and Bologna. At an early age he was made a prebendary of the Magdeburg cathedral, and in 1200 was appointed Provost of the Cathedral Chapter by Innocent III . Through the influence of the Bishop of Halberstadt, he was nominated as the successor of Ludolph, Archbishop of Magdeburg (d.1205). After receiving the papal approbation, which was at first withheld, partly on account of those who had taken part in his election and partly on his account of his attitude towards Philip of Suabia, Albert proceeded to Rome, where he was consecrated bishop by the Pope (Dec., 1206) and received the pallium . He entered Magdeburg on Palm Sunday, 15 April, 1207, and five days later a conflagration destroyed many of the buildings in the city, including his own cathedral. One of his first cares was to repair the damage wrought by fire, and in 1208 he laid the corner-stone of the present cathedral, which, though completed 156 years later, serves as his most fitting memorial. He likewise rebuilt a large part of the city, and is regarded as the founder of the Neustadt. Magdeburg was also indebted to him for several valuable privileges which he obtained from Otto IV after the death of Philip of Suabia. Albert did much to further the interest of religion. He established the Dominicans (1224), and the Franciscans (1225) in the city, and also founded a convent for women in honour of St. Mary Magdalen.

The rule of the House of Wettin, which began in 1089 when Heinrich von Eilenburg became Margrave of Meissen, went on to last for 829 years. Saxony in 1485 the land was divided between the brothers Albert and Ernst. Albert took the eastern territories, largely corresponding to the present-day federal state of Saxony. A painting exists entitled "Portrait of a Saxonian Prince", which was done by Lucas Cranach of the German School. He lived from 1472 to 1553. It pictures a young robed boy waering what look likes a luxurious red silk tunic. He wears a crown of flowers on his head. He may be the son of Frederick III, we need to investiagte this. In 1697 Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, was crowned King of Poland. Under the rule of Friedrich August I (Augustus the Strong) and Friedrich August II, Dresden became a centre of European art and culture. Saxony fought on the side of Napoleon at the Battle of Leipzig and lost. As a result, substantial territories had to be ceded to Prussia. Early industrialisation at the end of the 19th century brought prosperity but also social tension to Saxony. In Leipzig Ferdinand Lassalle founded the Allgemeiner Deutscher Arbeiterverein (General German Workers Association), and in Chemnitz August Bebel founded the Sächsische Volkspartei (Saxon Peoples Party), from which the Social Democratic Party later emerged.

The Wettins were a German dynastical family that ruled in Saxony, Thuringia, Poland, Great Britain, Belgium, Portugal, and Bulgaria. Their name comes from their castle on the Saale near Halle. The North-West Company of Montreal occupied the northern part of Alberta district before the Hudson's Bay Company succeeded in coming from Hudson Bay to take possession of it. The first hold of the Athabasca region was gained by Peter Pond, who, on behalf of the North-West Company of Montreal, built Fort Athabasca on river La Biche in 1778. Roderick Mackenzie, cousin of Sir Alexander Mackenzie, built Fort Chipewyan on Lake Athabasca in 1788. By way of the North Saskatchewan river Alexander Mackenzie crossed the height of land, and proceeding northward discovered the river which bears his name, and also the Arctic Sea. Afterward going westward from Lake Athabasca and through the Peace river, he reached the Pacific Ocean, being the first white man to cross the North American continent, north of Mexico. As part of the North-West Territories the district of Alberta was organized in 1875. Additional privileges and a local legislature were added from time to time. At length in igos the district of Alberta was enlarged and the present province formed by the Dominion parliament. (G. BR.) The main feeder of Albert Edward Nyanza, and western head-stream of the Nile, the Ruchuru, rises on the north side of the volcanoes north of Lake Kivu (see MJUMBIRO) . On reaching the level plain ism. from the lake its waters become brackish, and the vegetation on its banks is scanty. The reedy marshes near its mouth form a retreat for a primitive race of fisherrnen. Lake Dweru, the shores of which are generally high, is fed by the streams from the eastern slopes of the Ruwenzori range. One of these, the Mpango, is a larger river than the Ruchuru.
