But'he regarded himself more the subject of the king of France than of the king of Scotland, subordinated the interests of the latter state to the former, and disliked his official duties in Scotland^ where the benefits of his administration were largely diminished by his want of perseverance and frequent absence. ~ He apfJeaVs to have been a man of honourable arid straightforward conduct, whose character must be cleared from the aspersions of Wolsey and the English authorities. Extractions: Al-Battani is sometimes known by a latinised version of his name, variants being Albategnius, Albategni or Albatenius. His full name was Abu Abdallah Mohammad ibn Jabir ibn Sinan al-Raqqi al-Harrani al-Sabi al-Battani. Al-Battani was born in Harran, called Carrhae in earlier times by the Romans, which lies on the Balikh River, 38 km southeast of Urfa. His family had been members of the Sabian sect, a religious sect of star worshippers from Harran. Being worshipers of the stars meant that the Sabians had a strong motivation for the study of astronomy and they produced many outstanding astronomers and mathematicians such as Thabit ibn Qurra. In fact Thabit was also born in Harran and would have still have been living there at the time that al-Battani was born. Al-Battani, unlike Thabit , was not a believer in the Sabian religion, however, for "Abu Allah Mohammad" indicates that he was certainly a Muslim.

Albategnius albategnius By Robin Casady. When I started observing sometime between 600and 700 pm the floor of albategnius Rukl 44 was all in shadow. http://observers.org/reports/98.06.02.html
Extractions: By Robin Casady When I started observing sometime between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. the floor of Albategnius [Rukl 44] was all in shadow. There were two small white specs showing. One was the central peak and the other was a high point on the east wall of Klein. I was observing through a mackerel sky. As the night went on the clouds became thicker, then a clear area would come over and I could observe again. So, I was in and out of the house waiting for sucker holes. Each time I went out, Albategnius was different. Klein's wall slowly emerged from the shadow. By midnight much of the floor was illuminated and long pointed shadows pointed inwards from the peaks on the rim. Albategnius B was apparent, though its floor was dark. It was fun to watch the light slowly spill into Albategnius. Moving north, Rimae Triesnecker, Rima Hyginus, and Rima Ariadaeus were all showing well. Vallis Alpes was crossing the terminator early in the evening. Later it had completely emerged, but the floor was in shadow. Equipment: Takahashi TSC 225 binoviewer + 10mm eyepieces approx 338x

The latter looked awfully subtle to me the time I noticed them; I assume they are older (or for some other reason, shallow) craters. Albategnius (...Akkana) Albategnius seems to be crossed by many north/south pointing rilles and catenae in addition to the catena leading into Klein , there's another very prominent rille on Albategnius' eastern wall. Perhaps these are secondaries from Copernicus, or even from Imbrium (though they're presumably younger than that)? Burnham Sunrise Ray Approximately as the sunrise terminator crosses Burnham, the rising sun shines through a gap in that crater's western wall, and creating a ray of light across the flat terrain lying between the west wall of Burnham and the east wall of Albategnius. This ray is finer and possibly longer-lived than the better-known Hesiodus sunrise ray . It has been seen in apertures as small as 70 mm. For predictions for it, see

His full name is ''Abu Abdallah Mohammad ibn Jabir ibn Sinan al-Raqqi al-Harrani al-Sabi al-Battani'', hence the usual shortening. His name derives from his native town, Batan in Mesopotamia From his observations at Aracte and Damascus , where he died, he was able to correct some of Ptolemy 's results, previously taken on trust. He compiled new tables of the Sun and Moon , long accepted as authoritative, discovered the movement of the sun's apogee, and assigned to annual precession the improved value of 55". Perhaps independently of Aryabhatta (born at Pataliputra on the Ganges in AD), he introduced the use of
