He was, may Allah have mercy on him, Mohiaddin, Abu Zakariya (his kunya), Yahya (his real name), ibn Sharaf, An-Nawawi (his most well-known title adopted from his birthplace Nawa). Imaam Nawawi was born in Muharram of 631 H corresponding to 1253 A.D. to a family of Nawa, a village near Damascus, Syria (known in earlier times as Ash-Sham). He spent his adolescence and attained maturity in this village where he memorized the Holy Quran. Ustad Marakashi of Nawa said, " I saw Nawawi in Nawa when he was a youth aged 10 years. Other boys of his age used to force him to play with them, but he would not like that, and would remain busy in his studies. If his colleagues insisted on his joining them in their games, he would start weeping." Ustad further said, " I started loving Nawawi immensely from that moment." His father wanted that his son join him in his business, but on account of his ascetic inclination and temperament, An Nawawi did not like it. It was during these times that he completed his memorization of the Holy Quran. Keeping in view his quest for learning, his father resolved to arrange for a proper and befitting education for his son. Thus, he took his son to Damascus, a cradle of learning at the time. In Damascus, An Nawawi started to learn from renowned teacher, Kamal ibn Ahmed. Imaam Nawawi said, " When I attained the age of 19 years, my father took me to Damascus, where I joined Madrasa Rawaha. I studied in this institution for two years. During my stay, I was able to memorize in full the book

In each capital, an important medical center developed. Thus, by the end of the 13th century, there were many medical centers spread throughout the Arab world. As this is an expansive subject in history, Space does not allow the description of all the hospitals built throughout these centuries. We, therefore, have chosen some of the important institutions, which will be described according to the region where they were developed in. Ash-Sham Ash-Sham at that time included what is known now as Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine., Damascus and Jerusalem were the important cities.

He took me by the hand. We were about to leave and I said, "O Apostle of Allah you said you will teach me the most superior Surah in the Qur-an." The Prophet said, (it is) "Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the world, (Surah Al-Fatiha) which consists of seven repeatedly recited verses and the Magnificent Qur-an which was given to me." (Narrated by Al-Bukhari). Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that while Gabriel was sitting with the Prophet (peace be upon him) he heard a creaking sound above him, and after raising his head he said, "This is a gate opened in heaven today which has never been opened before." Then when an angel descended through it He said, "this is an angel came down to earth, he has never come down before." He gave a salutation and said, "Rejoice in two lights brought to you which have not been brought to any Prophet before you: Fatihat Al-kitab and the last verses of Surah Al-Baqara. You will not recite a letter of them without being given the blessing it contains." (Narrated by Muslim). Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Do not make your houses graveyards. The devil flies from the house in which Surah Al-Baqara is recited." (Narrated by Muslim).

The route sets off from Marrakech, the capital city of both the Almoravid and Almohad empires (from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries). It encompasses, in the west, the two Atlantic ports, Safi and Essaouira, and in the south, the Upper Atlas with Aghmat as the first step up to the mountains, and Tinmel as the last point of historical reference. Another reference point, albeit exclusively archaeological, is Sidi Bou Othman in the north. Marrakech Marrakech Situated in the Haouz Plain, Marrakech stands at the crossroads to a network of communication routes, a situation responsible for its historical role as a site of interchange. The first nucleus of this city, founded by the Saharans and the Almoravids around 1070, was to turn into the metropolis of an empire in the space of a generation. At the beginning of the twelfth century, Ali Ibn Yusuf developed the city by supplying it with water, by paving its streets and by building the mosque that continues to bear his name and which was to become the principal centre of Marrakech's urban sprawl. In 1127 he surrounded the city with a 9-km wall which is still intact today. Under the Almohads Marrakech, together with its fortified citadel, became the most important city in the Muslim West. The capital of an empire encompassing the entire Maghreb and Muslim Spain, it owed its prosperity above all to a lucrative transsaharan commerce.
