Product Description
Uncover the Technology behind Hybrids and Make an Intelligent Decision When Purchasing Your Next Vehicle
With one billion cars expected to be on the roads of the world in the near future, the potential for war over oil and the negative environmental effects of emissions will be greater than ever before. Now is the time to seriously consider an alternative to standard automobiles.

Exploring practical solutions to these problems, Hybrid Vehicles and the Future of Personal Transportation provides broad coverage of the technologies involved in manufacturing and operating hybrids. It reviews key components of hybrid and pure electric vehicles, including batteries, fuel cells, and ultracapacitors. The book also discusses both concept and production-bound hybrids as well as the economics and safety issues of hybrid ownership. In addition, the author supplies effective tips on how to save gasoline with conventional and hybrid automobiles.

Making the jargon of fuel-efficient vehicles accessible to a wide audience, this guide explains the history of hybrids, how they work, and their impact on the environment. It will help you make a sound decision concerning the purchase and operation of a hybrid or electric vehicle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hybrid Vehicles & The Future of Personal Transportation
This book is very comprehensible to an intelligent individual. There is a wealth of both qualitative and quantitative information that is fundamental to understanding hybrid vehicles and automobiles in general. For me the book provides a sound basis for discussing the merits of these vehicles and their role in solving our energy problems.Allen Fuhs is an extremely competent engineer who writes with clarity about both the details and the processes appropriate to this topic. I gave a copy of the book to a friend who does automotive design and he is also very enthusiastic about the contents of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique book on hybrid vehicles
I am a professor of electrical engineering, so I have critically evaluated the portions relevant to my area and found them to be accurate. In the book Dr. Fuhs has covered the four basic areas of power electronics, motor/generators (M/Gs), electrochemistry, and control. He has done a good job of connecting the electrical and mechanical aspects of the hybrid to illustrate the important tradeoffs. Many of his explanations start with basic physics, which allows everyone to follow the analysis.

I also liked the way he treated the commercial aspects of hybrids (the consequences of vehicle size, options, weight, etc.) and explained the nuances of the various vehicle rating systems (a discussion which should definitely be of value to consumers).

The book covers a very broad range of engineering and technology disciplines, and in this sense is unique from all other books on the topic. It has many "gems" of wisdom and thoughtful insight into the area of personal transportation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Six Stars
As an overview of hybrids, this is an endlessly fascinating book by Allen Fuhs.

Extraordinarily broad in its coverage, it ranges from peak oil (with useful new details) to the differences in suitable electric motors; it is filled with lots of practical nuts-and-bolts calculations that will appeal to the armchair-engineer who enjoys interpreting numbers and juggling costs, pay-offs, and alternatives in range, fuel consumption and weights. (*)

Because of Big Oil disinformation efforts -- see EV web sites and discussions hijacked by AI-generated posts of encyclopedic substance and length -- I don't accept the criticism of other reviewers as necessarily valid.

Big Oil disinformation? Surely you jest? Wally Rippel - WKTEC - "There is a $100T (T as in Trillion) worth of business still to be done (in oil in the ground)." For obvious reasons 'peak oil' and 'global warming' are not popular topics for Big Oil - see the last eight years for details. You bet there is disinformation. And a lot more besides. Got Peter Dale Scott?

I found it in Stanford University's bookstore and, in this case, go by the theory that if it is good enough for Stanford U's engineering students it is good enough for me, and perhaps you. You might try to look at a copy before making your own mind up.

(*) The extraordinary broadness of its coverage and its clever and approachable explanation of the tradeoffs in hybrid vehicle design -- noted by EMprof -- and above all, the clarity of its thinking, are very reminiscent of two works that were outstanding in a different field - Darrol Stinton's The Design of the Aeroplane, and The Anatomy of the Aeroplane - two magnificent books for those interested in another EAA - the Experimental Aircraft Association.

Another EAA; since the EV was (re) born and the Electric Auto Association became more widely known.

2-0 out of 5 stars Could have been a great book...
I am a mechanical engineer working on a development project and purchased this newly-released book based on the contents description and author's credentials ("Distinguished professor and SAE Fellow").

I am extremely disappointed with the content of this book. From literally the inside of the front jacket it is full of technical errors and incomprehensible charts.Sentence fragments are pervasive and the writing in general is imprecise and often overly casual.Occasionally the author tosses in seemingly random thoughts that serve to distract the reader.(What does pickup truck tailgate position have to do with hybrid vehicles? Nothing.)

If you overlook the incorrect unit conversions on the jacket (degrees Kelvin??) and flip past the literally 23 page Contents (??!) you come to the Preface, where you will find some clues to what went wrong. The author restates the purpose of the book about four times; "for buyers or would-be buyers of hybrids...", "intended for potential hybrid customers", "information for the educated citizen", "for the engineer...a starting point for additional research".I think I disagree with all of these. As a 460+ page book full of equations this is clearly not a buyer's guide.Unfortunately, no engineer can make use of the contents because it is so full of errors and inconsistencies that any seemingly useful nuggets of information must be researched from scratch to determine their validity. What responsible author cites Wikipedia as the source for a graph used to illustrate a key technical concept? (Figure 7.1)

It is perfectly acceptable to publish a technical book that is not written for engineers. It is another thing entirely to release a book that is full of charts, graphs, equations, and statistics that imply a level of technical accuracy that does not stand up under scrutiny.

My overwhelming impression is that the book was rushed to the printer without adequate proofreading and technical editing.Perhaps the publisher gave in to the pressure to cash in on the fuel economy craze that hit in late 2008, and what could have been a useful and comprehensive technical overview turned into a typed collection of notes. It is indeed a shame, since the basic research and technical understanding was clearly there. The author and/or publisher simply did not have the discipline to properly finish the job.I fear for our collective future as an innovative society if we begin to accept work like this.

I believe there is a place in the market for an interesting and accessible technical overview of hybrid vehicle technologies. This is not that book.

Product Description
Highlighting the importance of transportation to a country’s infrastructure and survival, Transportation Systems Security presents the strategic and practical considerations involved in the implementation of physical, procedural, and managerial safeguards required to keep all modes of transportation up and running during an actual or potential disaster.
Structured in an easy cognitive fashion, the book begins with a basic introduction providing terms and definitions. It describes both physical and information system layouts and defines who controls what parts of the process, how far control is extended, and who oversees controls within the system.
Building on this foundation, subsequent chapters discuss problems such as the need for a more defined “domain-based” approach when threats, assets, vulnerabilities, and safeguards are not under local control. The book describes and refines the concepts of criticality, impact, and consequence as they relate to the assignation of value for personnel, assets, facilities, information and activities in terms of how they might support performance.
By comparing continuity of operations planning (COOP) to business continuity planning (BCP), the book presents security measures as a value-added benefit rather than a hindrance to business and introduces the notion of certification, accreditation, and licensure. It demonstrates safeguards that layer outward from the entity and across the system with the ability to prevent, detect, and notify, as well as respond to and recover from a crisis.
Emphasizing the sharing of information and methods, the book encourages security to become an integrated component within the system, not just imposed on top of it. It takes a holistic approach to the transportation infrastructure, introducing the concept of fragility and the measurable factors involved, and including a 20 page questionnaire to help managers determine their company’s fragility in terms of transportation security. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but...
This book is not what I thought it would be. It does have some valid and interesting points, primarily in the introductory and theoretical parts in the beginning, but that's where it stops for my part.

The strong side

The best chapter of the book, as far as I am concerned, is chapter 2: The Transportation System Topography, building the theoretical base for most of the book. The authors demonstrate a solid knowledge and understanding and manage to convey it in a clear and precise manner.

The weak side

The front cover gives the impression that this book deals with all transportation modes, or at least with air, sea and rail. It does not. And it is not so hands-on as I thought it would be. At times it seems to bejust meandering along without getting anywhere. I can understand that there is a lot of ground to cover, but do you really have to cover it all?

Conclusion

It is not a NO-buy, but also not a YES-buy, rather a MAYBE-buy. If you're looking for a book on transportation vulnerability or transportation risks, this is probably not the book for you. However, if you are a transportation systems manager who wants to secure your transportation system against malicious attacks, yes, this book could be very helpful, albeit it will probably not be the one you will using as a reference more than a few times. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Enthusiastic Review
I came to the project on an executive level having little to no expertise in Warehouse Software Management (WMS). From the onset of my reading "Selecting Warehouse Software from WMS & ERP Providers" it proved to be everything and far more than I could have ever begin to appreciate. But, when I became armed with the companion work Supply Chain Terminology, I was empowered to understand the language of the industry. Hence, intuition fueled by grasping the concepts with added clarity allowed for our project to advance in a far more professional and efficient manner; discussions amongst team members was enhanced and leadership could be more effectively provided. We are now positioned to accomplish what many other reputed multi-million dollar enterprise have not been able to achieve in its supply chain software solutions, because we have an executive staff who has invested the time and have had the good fortune of sound advice and business practices from the Philip Obal series of reading materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to my library
The terminology in this industry seems endless. So it's great to have something for reference when unfamiliar terms or phrases are brought into conversation. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to gain familiarity with the buzzwords of the industry. It seems like a perfect tool for college graduates who don't want to be caught off guard in a job interview. And it also is great for someone like me, who's been in the business for a while.Easy read.

Sincerely,
Rick Howard

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful to both new & experienced practitioners
The glossary is very comprehensive, and helpful both to people new to the industry as well as those who have been in it for several years.Hard to think of any other place where one could find a compilation so comprehensive. Great reference manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, Current, and Very Handy
I have found Mr. Obal's Glossary of Supply Chain Terminology invaluable in keeping current and specific with the constantly changing Supply Chain lingo.

It is as concise and current as any reference book on this subject that I have seen.I find the EDI Code definitions particularly helpful.

Very highly recommended especially for logistics professionals who must communicate across companies, industries, stages, and modes in the supply chain. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not a book its a Pamphlet for esri
Don't buy this book unless you want to be overwhelmed by pr for ESRI about projects they have done. Its a snooze.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ask for a free sales brochure...
This book showcases many examples of how GIS can be applied in the field of transportation using ArcView GIS, but it doesn't come with any theory. As such, it is more like an overpriced sales brochure and not a textbook. Nevertheless, the examples are really neat and should inspire any practitioner in the field.

3-0 out of 5 stars Superficial case studies
This book looks at GIS-based applications implemented for various transportation agencies around the US, and one in Korea. It is published by ESRI press, so every example uses ArcGIS & friends. Each chapter begins with a paragraph or two about the agency and the problems it's trying to solve using GIS. Each page has a screenshot with accompanying text that merely describes the screenshot in a fairly superficial way. The kind of generic commentary is typified here: "Using ESRI's ArcView application, the transportation manager can click on icons and review the date of reported accidents."

That really just describes to me how someone uses the software, where I had been hoping for a more high-level, deeper analysis with specific examples. From a production standpoint, this book is fairly poor. Some of the screenshots are of poor quality (e.g., they didn't even bother setting the character encoding properly for the Korean shots, so some of the characters show up as garbled). There's a lot of wasted whitespace, and the pages started to fall out as I reached the end of the book (brittle binding, I guess).

This book will be useful for managers wondering if GIS could help them, who are looking for situations where others have found this to be the case. I don't think it will necessarily give them much understanding of exactly HOW useful it might be or why. Certainly, this will not be of much use to GIS users, in my opinion, since it relatively thin on specifics. ... Read more

Still the only book published anywhere in the world which is devoted entirely to the principles of aeromedical transport, "Aeromedical Transportation" has rightly become known as the sole reference for the industry. This second edition has been radically revised and updated; featuring the latest research, updated references and new chapters on the transport of intensive care patients, and medical emergencies/death in flight. Since the first edition was published in 1996, the concept of 'evidence-based medicine' has been accepted as essential in any book which endeavours to be the accepted knowledge base in its subject area. A very practical text, international in its approach, much of its content is devoted to clinical matters. Administration and organisation are also discussed, but are addressed from the standpoint of the clinical aeromedical escort. The text is suitable for medical, paramedical and nursing personnel and for those working in organizations whose duties include the transportation of the sick and injured by air. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WWII
Got it for a gift for my dad, it was his war..... He LOVES this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Insights on how we won WW2
This book shows the various stages up to and including the scrapping of thousands of these airplanes after the war.The US waged a war of attrition against both Japan and Germany and the 300,000 airplanes and 500,000 produced and trained was the key part of it since both enemies did not have an effective countermeasure against it because of the sheer numbers involved.

It shows how both oceans protected our productive resources and how we were able to assemble these fantastic airplane factories which usually had around 50,000 on a well know airfield producing up to 60 airplanes a day.

As a pilot and airplane enthusiast its really interesting how they assembled these aircraft which were the most complex to date in so little time in numbers never done again and probably never to be repeated in modern warfare. Its also interesting to see how women manned most of these positions on a temporary basis and then returned to become home keepers. There is even a section on how they shipped them overseas and I have seen a video on http://www.zenoswarbirdvideos.com/ which showed how they assembled a P-47 using nothing but the crate, hand tools and 20 men after transport in a liberty ship across the pond.

Many of these factories still exist today and can be seen on google maps which adds yet another facet to this era including remnants of old airports next to the plant even if closed today.

Overall a great read for enthusiasts like me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Photos, Good Value
This book contains a peek at the factory floors of the major American aircraft manufacturers of the second world war. Through the liberal use of good quality black and white photographs from the era, we see variousaircraft (both famous and not so famous) at various stages ofproduction.

What would have made this book better? I would like to haveseen how each individual plane shaped up as it went down the productionline. Nevertheless, it still can be a valuable resource for modellers, orthose just plain interested in World War II planes. ... Read more

Before the coming of the “dot com” era it was by no accident that the richest individuals in the world were involved with tankers. Probably the most famous ship owner in the world was Aristotle Socrates Onassis. But before one looks at tanker freights of which Onassis among others managed to secure a good return on capital it is crucial to recap and examine some of the factors that affected the tanker industry starting with the Second World War.

The Transportation of Oil by Sea offers a fascinating introductory account of crude oil transportation and how international issues from World War II, pre-independence Zimbabwe, and the Iran-Iraq War have been influenced by considerations for oil production and transportation.

Author Tony Akaki presents a diversity of geographical, political, environmental, and economic insights in one volume, offering a compelling look at this often-overlooked aspect of history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and thorough
Having been a student with Harvey Miller probably makes my review somewhat biased. Nevertheless, this is an excellent book if you're a student or professional in the field of GIS and need to know how GIS can be applied in transportation, or vice versa, knowing tranportation, this book will tell you what GIS can do for you. Mind you, this is not for the fainthearted, this is solid academic work and presumes some academic knowlegde prior to reading this book. It is specked with references that are hard to get, and you are likely to spend more time in the library reading up on the bibliography than digesting the actual text. Still, if GIS-T is your line of research, you cannot avoid having this book. It is by far one of the most comprehensive I have seen. It is clear that the authors posess solid knowledge and have covered a wide field and left nothing out. It may have a rather inhibitive price; in hindsight it was well worth the money spent. ... Instead of the classical cost function, a minimax cost function isintroduced. In other words, a matrix with the minimal largest elementis sought in the class of matrices with non-negative elements andgiven sums of row and column elements. The problem may also beinterpreted as follows: suppose that the shipment time is proportionalto the amount to be shipped. Then, the minimax gives the minimal timerequired to complete all shipments. An algorithm for finding theminimax and the corresponding matrix is developed. An extension tointeger matrices is presented. Alternative minimax criteria are alsoconsidered. The solutions obtained are important for the theory oftransportation polyhedrons. They determine the vertices of convexhulls of the sets of basis vector pairs and the corresponding matricesof solutions. Audience: The monograph is addressed to specialists inoperations research, optimization, and transportation problems. ... Read more

Product Description
As the field of transportation moves toward the "total quality management" paradigm, performance-based outcomes and quantitative measures have become increasingly important. Measuring performance in the field depends heavily on modeling trends and data, which in turn requires powerful, and flexible analytical tools. To date, however, transportation professionals have lacked a unified, rigorous guide to modeling the wide range of problems they encounter in the field. Statistical and Econometric Methods for Transportation Data describes the techniques most useful for modeling the many complex aspects of transportation, such as travel demand, safety, emissions, and the environment. Taking care not to overwhelm readers with statistical theory, the authors clearly and concisely present the relevant analytical methods in quantitative chapters built on transportation case studies. Mastering this material enables readers to:·Formulate research hypotheses·Identify appropriate statistical and econometric models·Avoid common pitfalls and misapplications of statistical methods·Interpret model results correctlyIdeal as both a textbook and reference, this book makes three unique contributions to transportation practice and education. First, it presents a host of analytical techniques-both common and sophisticated-used to model transportation phenomena. Second, it provides a wealth of examples and case studies, and third, it specifically targets present and future transportation professionals. It builds the foundation they need not only to apply analytical models but also to understand and interpret results published elsewhere. ... Read more

Product Description

Reporting on cutting-edge research in production, distribution, and transportation, The Supply Chain in Manufacturing, Distribution, and Transportation: Modeling, Optimization, and Applications provides the understanding needed to tackle key problems within the supply chain. Viewing the supply chain as an integrated process with regard to tactical and operational planning, it details models to help you address the wide range of organizational issues that can adversely affect your supply chain.

This compilation of scholarly research work from academia and industry considers high-level production schedules, product sourcing, network alignment, distribution center layouts, transportation operations with stochastic demand, inventory planning, and day-to-day operations planning. The book is divided into three sections:

  • Industrial and Service Applications of the Supply Chain
  • Analytic Probabilistic Models in Supply Chain Problems
  • Optimization Models of Supply Chain Problems

Because tactical and operational models rely on quality forecasts of demand, the text examines stochastic customer demand, coordination of supply chain functions, and solution algorithms. It reviews real-world business applications and case studies that illustrate the modeling solutions discussed.
